My i-Pods hard disk is making a lot of noise all of a sudden. I didn't drop it or anything. When I turn it off the hard drive makes a sound like when you turn off your vacuum cleaner, not as loud of course. The noise is made constantly while a song is playing. Is the hard disk bad? Can I reformat and how?

I've had some broken hard drives in my many years of Mac life and one of them was making scary noise. I assume your iPod's drive is physically broken.

Is it still under warranty? You should call AppleCare and get a replacement. I don't think re-formatting it will fix it.

I've had a dead iPod like a year ago and Apple has sent me a new one and I send the old one back to them (with my credit card number as a hostage, of course).

I guess iPod is not very repairable, just like cell phones.
