Back in 1983, Apple's Macintosh team attended a retreat at the La Playa Carmel (http://www.laplayahotel.com) hotel in Carmel, California, where employee shenanigans resulted in a 30-year company gathering ban from the resort.

According to SFGate (http://blog.sfgate.com/getlost/2013/04/16/carmel-hotel-ends-ban-on-apple-retreat-30-years-after-skinny-dipping-incident), the La Playa Carmel, which is located about two hours south of Cupertino, recently lifted the restrictions preventing Apple from using the spot for corporate retreats. Apple has already booked an upcoming meeting at the hotel.

Frank Rose, author of "West of Eden: The End of Innocence at Apple Computer (http://www.amazon.com/West-Eden-Innocence-Apple-Computer/dp/0615278841)," details the trip in his book, calling it a "college beer blast," where the Macintosh team went skinny dipping and had a bonfire. When [Elliot] was eating dinner in the La Playa's primly starched dining room and saw a dozen Macintosh people swimming nude in the lighted pool outside, he chuckled softly and went on with this meal, oblivious to the polite strangling sounds of the blue-haired ladies all around. He was, after all, the official guardian of Apple's corporate culture, and if this was what he was supposed to guard, he was ready for the task.Following the hijinks, the Macintosh team was asked to leave and to never return, a ban that has been revoked after the hotel went through both a remodel and a change of ownership.

The new La Playa Carmel hotel offers ocean view hotel rooms, meeting facilities with team building activities like golf and sailing, lush gardens, and the infamous pool where Apple employees once skinny dipped.

Might just be me, but those shenanigans makes me have more respect for them. I pray to all the deities that they do it again!

I stayed there once. Good for ocean view, but it's a fairly standard 3-star hotel, nothing extravagant like the photos indicate. For my money, I would stay at Tickle Pink Inn (similar price but much nicer).

No, that's a regular-sized chessboard in a tiny-ass garden.

I hope they've cleaned the filters since then. People were pretty hairy in the early 80's.

It's the hotel's loss. They lost 30 years worth of skinny dipping revenue. :)

It was a permanent ban, not a 30 year ban.

It ended 30 years later only because the hotel changed ownership/management, and the new powers-that-be decided to lift it, not because it "expired".

The wording makes it seem as if it was originally intended to last 30 years. It was intended to be permanent.

They should so build a bonfire and go skinny-dipping.I'm not one for disrespecting the rules people set for behavior while guests on their property, but if I worked at Apple I would be SO tempted to do this.

The results were good last, time, anyway.

Sounds like a party I wanted to be at!

Harking back to those rebellious, innocent, idealistic, risk-taking, 'thumb your nose at the establishment', and 'worry 'bout nothing' early years.

Those sure were good times. Count me in too.

Thanks, that makes more sense. Otherwise, it sounds like the hotel was uncannily organised and prepared for incident like this..

Hotel Policy:
Ban per Bonfire: 10 years.
Ban per Skinny Dipping: 1 year per wiener on display x 20 wieners = 20 years.
Ban per Sex in Lobby: n/a for computer nerds.

Total Ban(to be presented on checkout)
30 years.

Thank you for your business. We hope to have your business again in 2013.

They should celebrate the 30th anniversary of this event and the upcoming release of iWatch and iTV in the same way as they did it 30 years ago. And get banned for the next 30 years, then return and repeat. That'd be a great tradition! :)

Down the coast from Carmel, at an unnamed famous resort, some nerds were drinking $5000 bottles of wine (multiple) and one of them danced on the top of a hybrid Lexus to the extent that it was totaled. The sheriff deputies made an arrest, but later money changed hands and all was well.

if you saw a couple of naked nerds skinny dipping, you would've probably banned them for 30 years also.
