ThinkSecret reports (http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0510australia.html) that over the weekend, Apple seeded developers with build 8F45 of Mac OS X 10.4.3. The latest build has no "known issues" according to the rumor site, suggesting that the update is approaching release status.
Mac OS X 10.4.3 will weigh in at around 100MB and include more than 550 fixes and improvements
Few details of the specific improvements are available. Appleinsider posts (http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1341) a similar report.

Here's to a more stable Safari, to make it stop crashing every other time I visit and then close the tab to a site with shady CGI programming, and maybe a bit of tinkering into whatever makes iTunes 6 and 6.0.1 beach-ball excessively... :(
Other than that I'm actually quite happy with 10.4.2... ;)

It might finally be time to upgrademy PowerBook to Tiger.
I was waiting on a third party application to work under Tiger and then I didn't have time to do the upgrade. And then 10.4.3 became imminent. Well, as soon as it's released (and confirmed not to screw up PowerBooks), I'll do the upgrade.
My PowerMac is already at Tiger - it didn't have the dependency on the third party app.

Let's just hope they fix iTunes and add "show multiple songs" so you can filter your iPod.
Oh, and also fix Safari so when I accidentally hit command-q (while using tabs) I get a prompt asking me if I want to close all tabs.
And Santa, I want a sparklin' wizard to show up when I use pages...

Hopefully, this update is released at some point this week since I will be on travel next week and will not have internet access. I guess it doesn't really matter though since I haven't had a single issue with my PowerBook with 10.4.2.
I just like having the latest software. ;)

Cool! I just finally upgraded to Tiger over the weekend.
Slightly off topic - When I upgraded, I did an archive & install, which left a "Previous System 1" folder on my hard drive. I've gone though all my programs and everything seems fine, so do I need to keep this folder for any reason? Or is it okay to delete it now?
Thanks

I think this is a great thing and am always happy to have my computer a bit snappier, and I love Apple to death, and I hope no one can ever trace this question back to me, but...how are we so happy and yet mocking of SP2? It seems the same to me, only this is a DL and I doubt will be available on CD for the dial up users.
This just seems like a lot of updates at once. Which is good, since they shouldn't break each other. But... (and yes, I'm voting this story positive)

It was about every two months with Panther, Jaguar and Puma.
With Tiger coming out at the end of April, 10.4.1 by mid-may, 10.4.2 mid-July and 10.4.3 end of October (possibly), the average would be again two months but then 10.4.1 should be seen rather as an stop-gap release and therefore the real - intended - frequency of updates might be closer to three months.

I would like to see iDisk be as transparent as clicking on an external drive, rather than the dog-slow, walking through treacle experience it is currently.
I'd also like to see the calculator have results edited rather than just a string of numbers e.g. 1,234,567.00 rather than 1234567.00 They do it for the calculator widget why not the main one?

Just realized that Tiger is out for half a year now and Veritas has not managed yet to make their Net-Backup client compatible with it (it took at least half year with 10.3 and 10.2 as well but that is no excuse).
It probably does not help that Veritas is owned by that very Mac-supportive company Symantec.

I agree that this would be nice (though it should also check for more than one *window* open, too).
You can completely disable the quit keyboard shortcut fairly simply if you're willing to hit the command line:

Once you disable the quit shortcut, you need to use the menu to quit Safari. But I never quit Safari nowadays anyway.

With the Ajax craze, every link on every website seems to be a piece of JS these days. I have seen pages take nearly 10-30 seconds from click to movement.
I've gotta tell you, from my point of view, 99% of the AJAX I have seen out there is crap that makes my web experience worse, not better. I hope people get over this fad soon.

A couple of months ago, Apple put forth the thought of 10.4.2 being the new "out-of-the-box" retail version of Tiger. Do you think this 500-550 bug correction qualifies 10.4.3 for Apple Retail Store status as a direct off-the-shelf version?
What about pre-installing on all new computer purchases as of the release date? :) :D

Your model isn't affected, only the single 1.8GHz models with the 600MHz bus.
Apple have put a page up about it here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302212
There is also a website dedicated to the problems with this model:

Hopefully it will be fixed in this update as there are a lot of upset owners out there.

Anyone else having problems with .Mac? I get frequent sync failings, random "your machine is not registered" messages, multiple copies of my calendar published, and a local iDisk that is not only dog slow in its own right, but slows down my entire finder and open/save dialogues in other apps, and regularly causes Office to hang. I've been very close to cancelling my membership for months, but I keep waiting for the next update to fix it. If 10.4.3 doesn't do it I'll probably kick it into touch

That's definitely the timeframe/rumor we've mostly been hearing, but doesn't that seem like a bad time of year to introduce a new product? Christmas is pretty distracting (i.e., people won't be interested in new computer products while they're planning to travel or are seeing their relatives), and to be in time to take advantage of Christmas sales, an early November release seems to be pushing it in terms of timeliness.
Just a thought I had recently.

That's definitely a problem with the drive, I'd get it checked as soon as possible.
I think the guy is referring to a problem with some ATi Hardware and drivers no longer working with Apple enhancements. (8500?) The deal is that users DVD hardware and media work fine with the usual third party DVD software such as VLC media player (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/5758).

Me neither, Safari usually quits by itself :p (the other times I Force Quit  )
I've been having the same troubles with both Firefox and Safari! Ever since the 10.4.2 update, both browsers just randomly quit themselves, on random pages including Google search results. The latest versions of Firefox haven't fixed it, and actually 1.0.6 made my Windows computer decide that the entire internet was invisible (it would load, but not render, pages).
I think web browsers have to fight an uphill battle against internet bloat. Between plugins for everything under the sun except drying your hair and ten million different web technologies and weird Flash and Javascript implementations, keeping up with everything is much too hard for small browser teams.
I hope they create some sort of protected memory space for each tab in the future, because when one website makes Safari bite it, none of the other tabs work, either, and with a non-responsive application, you can't even bookmark them.
And Q2DE would be really, really nice to have...at last! And maybe a fix for iTunes local playback without visualizations turning my PowerBook fan on all the time. It's probably related to the beachballing other people have mentioned.

I have got a couple question about these updates(meaning the 10.X.X <-- ones) do we ever see the introduction of new things i know this is extremely vague. I am not referring to like spotlight or dashboard but like what do you think the chances are we'll see things like the widget manager added to this?
I got to admit i am lacking in the knowledge of what goes into these updates but it seems like some of the stuff you all are mentioning that needs to be fixed would be simply changes in code that would fix certain bugs and what not, if this is the case what on earth could send this behemoth of an update over 100megs?
Finally I'm not scrapping the bottom of the barrel for free space on my HD but with an update of this size if it is replacing faulty components and software does it optimize by removing items it installs itself over, or is all of this +100med update going to be things installed on top what we saw with the Tiger .2 and .1?? Thanks in advance guys you are all such big help!
Edit: One suggestion I would like to throw out there is Apple please please please stop making dashboard such a damn memory hog when not in use, if it takes a milliecond longer to load when i press F12 then so be it, but i don't want 50 to 60 mbs of memory going to my weather and cnn.com widgets when i'm not even using them. For the poster that wants proof or a link PM and I'll give you my address so i can show you how these processes are slaving my ram even when i'm not using it!!!

Don't let the MS fanboys who hang out here read that. :)
To be fair, MS has said, come hell or highwater, they are going to release Vista by the 2006 Holiday Season.
I've read that the combo is ~100MB, if your system is up to date 10.4.3 will be much smaller in SU.

"Few details of the specific improvements are available."
Yet we are being told of 550 fixes? Someone is lying.
What the post meant to say is that the details do not elaborate on the problems. They do list many many (haven't actually counted myself), specific fixes. "Fixed X problem with Y application, etc". But it's just a sentence, not a full detailed explanation of the problem. And sometimes it's just "Improvements to X" with nothing further. 550? Wouldn't be surprised, it's a long list. You're not being lied to. You just don't get a novel outlining the fixes.

It has been reported that people get Frontrow to work with all sort of remote devices including WIFI and mobile phones. Maybe thats it - only negative might be that they want to get some sales from IMAC's so they might not want to add this for free except some sales of remotes?

100MB!! Well, it's a good thing my DSL order is going through. LOL. I'm just a little mad at Apple. Five days after I spent 2+ hours downloading iTunes 5 over my dial-up connection, they release 6!!!! Oh well. I still love them!:D
Well I wouldn't bother with 10.4.3 then because 10.4.4 will be out before you finished downloading.

Nah, apple slowed down with their updates in Tiger. In Panther and Jaguar you would be right. I remember 2 updates within the same month but now we get an update each 3 months.

I think there are quite a few (a quiet majority) - myself included - who have no problems with the current Mac OS release, though Apple do throw some cool things in with updates - including performance improvements. I'm not sure many Windows users can say that about updates, which in my experience have made PCs run slower rather than faster.
However, SP2 does appear to be good enough for average computer users...

This is something i've found funny too... reading many of the threads asking for advice about switching in these forums would suggest OSX was perfect and problem free, it's only when we have these updates do we see the issues people have with it. Take a look at the OS X 10.5 Leopard thread on page two, any potential switcher reading that would NEVER buy a Mac lol

Hopefully, this update is released at some point this week since I will be on travel next week and will not have internet access. I guess it doesn't really matter though since I haven't had a single issue with my PowerBook with 10.4.2.
Wouldn't it be a lot safer to upgrade after your trip, especially since you're not seeing any problems?
If you find out that the update has hosed your PB, and you're away from the network, wouldn't you be like a Boston fish? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrod)
I need my laptop when I travel, therefore my rule is to never make any updates within a week before heading to the airport....
The Release Notes for Veritas Netbackup 6.0 list both OS X 10.3 and 10.4 as supported...

I believe the RAM is given up once a program needs the RAM. Otherwise, until it's needed Dashboard doesn't give it up.

i doubt anyone's going to spend $1300+ just for Front Row! yes, the imacs are cool and yes, front row is cool...but certainly not THE reason to buy the new imac.
i certainly hope that front row will be available to all somewhere down the road, maybe even in the next update...but it's not the most important thing apple should be doing with the update.

Good to see that apple is still working on making the current operating system better. It is nice that they can spend time working on software improvements as opposed to just security patches.
I am hoping that this patch helps fix my current string of automator issues that I have been working with.

i still feel that dashboard needs some improvements.. specifically along the lines of downloading widgets from apples website and having them integrate within dashboard.. many a time i have downloaded a widget and safari will abruptly close and give me a bad access crash report.. while not utterly annoying, still disconcerting nonetheless. :o

Yep. My favorite remark in one of these 10.4.3 threads so far was when someone wrote (paraphrased) "I haven't had any problems at all with Tiger, but it's been more stable since 10.4.2." That's some seriously strong denial, when instability isn't a problem :D

Don't rush, em. This is what got us in this mess to begin with.
I am now 1000x's more anxious about this release than I was a few days ago.
I just bought a new 17" PowerBook that has the LookupD problems and screen flicker issues due to OS problems.
I hope after dropping 2,700 bucks Apple fixes these problems in 10.4.3. Otherwise, this PowerBook is going back.
This is not a proud moment for Apple. Just ask the people with 1.8 G5 Single CPU Macs. Tiger crashes--yes, crashes them--about every two hours.
So I say, Apple take your time. The damage to your reputation has been done. Don't make it worse by not fixing ALL of the serious problems in this release.

I've also had basically no Tiger problems. Other than the Mail hiding at login issue. And once my PB wouldn't wake from sleep. But that's about it.

I see from your sig you are running Tiger, so use Jabber then. Find a MSN<->Jabber gateway and your set. BTW, Google's IM is based on Jabber. My wife and I have been using jabber.org to do video iChat between my home in the US and my current work location in Tokyo. It works great. Jabber.org has a list of Jabber gateways to other services like MSN.

I hope for an "Out of Office " reply in Mail.app that ties up with iCal. Setting up a rule to reply is not good enough. PC's have had this for years. There was a fix in squirrel mail (if running an OSX Server, which I am). but that was broken in 10.4. If 10.4.3 was to fix this I would be a happy bunny! and my office could run more professionally!

I hope for an "Out of Office " reply in Mail.app that ties up with iCal. Since those kinds of auto-replies are a big no-no, from a security standpoint, I really hope this isn't implemented in Mail. Hopefully that glitch with the 1.8Ghz PMs will be fixed.
I think Apple should give people with this problem the option to maybe pay a little extra and trade-in the faulty 1.8 for a new or refurb 2.0 if not. No need for an apology, no harm done. I am coming up to my one-year Mac anniversary, I'm taking my PB out to dinner and then who knows  ;)
I really do love OSX, but if Windows machines got their acts together and offered a better product, I would buy it. It's nice having OSX as a relief, but I admit to still using XP daily on my desktop/server at home. I can't wait until I can actually afford a PowerMac as I'll then have no arguable reason to continue using XP :)
