I have just done the firmware update, I kept my original CPU a 2.66 Xeon but upgraded the ram to 16GB 1333mhz RAM

OSX still recognizes the ram as 1066mhz

I have held the internal reset button down for a few seconds with the plug out but its still the same.

Inconsequential

Single threaded performance is the same for the w3580, so if you find one for a stonking price then it might be worth it over the w3680.

Reset the PRAM comand option P and R I believe and then it will redetect the ram moduels to 1333.
I just got it working.
