What Leopard install disc you're using? OEM or retail one? First is no-go without some tweaks. You should use second one.

You need the full install disk, any grey disk won't work since they run only on the Mac they came with.

Leopard Restore discs will still be able to boot any Leopard compatiable machine. It's the installer that will refuse to do anything. But you can still use Disk Utility.
