where are the new powermacs everyone is talking about... and the press conferences?
People should be careful when tossing around the word "confirmed".
(I hope they do come out with the powermacs later today)

I agree with you.
I want a powerful Mac ASAP. Intel and AMD based computer are much faster than my G4 733.

Well, if there is something coming out today(I don't think so but I hope so), don't expect it before 9AM in CUpertino, a little less than 2 hours from now.

>>Intel and AMD based computer are much faster than my G4 733
No Intel piece of crap processor is faster than a G4 733 ... I can't believe the Apple owners who buy this Intel propaganda. The damn P4 is SIGNIFICANTLY SLOWER THAN ITS OWN P3 at similar clock speeds. Please, go to a Gateway Country Store and check out the P4 systems ... they SUCK. And no one's interested in them either, that's why PC sales are in the dumps and most consumers and businesses are still using sub-1Gig P2s and P3s.
Sure, the Athlon is wonderful, but it's not easy to find. The vast majority of PCs sold today are Intel. Gateway dumped the Athlon, Dell doesn't sell it.
I think the problem with Apples is that there's no place you can look at one side by side with a PC and try out a few basic pieces of software. Believe me, I have a PC and a Mac, the ghz myth is based on fact.

Usually. Apple should release thier new stuff not until 9 am PT ( noon, eastern) I,m just hoping for a G4 1.0 and higher, 1.2 might be better!
Anyway, I need a PowerMac within 3 weeks or so, then I have to make a decision as soon as possible.

I want to say that the actual mid level computer based on the Intel P4 (1,5 Mhz) is faster than the G4 733 (average on 20/25).
This result is tested by me .
Apple has to lunch a G4 1200 Mhz at least now.

Just be patient a little longer and then maybe some of us will be able to decide if we need new machines or not. I think that logically we will see the 1 g machines but I think we are all hoping for at least 1.2 g machines. Come on apple, make your devoted following happy!
We have stuck with you this long

I run a G4 400 and still run circles arround a dual P4 sever my company has.
You people are so much like sheeps it is all phycological(SP?) consumers buy the BS bigger numbers mean better product.
I sick of reading that P4 are better than G4

I think the only way to take any claim about speed comparison between a Mac and a PC is to give actual numbers in the applications/tasks you feel one is faster than the other. That way the arguments would be more solid.

I hope they will release a 1GHz Mac. Yes you are right, it is all psyco-stuff. I´m running a G4 466 Mhz, it is much faster than my 1GHz Pentium III. But get over with this faster stuff. Apple simply has the better product no matter what is faster.
It´s the 22nd of January, let´s just wait and see and be patient and if nothing comes out no matter what. We´ll wait till Tokyo.

You have all overlooked a big factor in speed comparisons.
It is possible to tweak a computer to mdeliver alot more performance. Not necesseraly hardware wise but software.
Speed also depends on what you do to your PC, this goes especially for windows.
Right now the best cpu is the athlon.

well we can still all cross are fingers but sine macuser seems to have blemished there credibility let think different. On this one I beleive Spymac which says a MWtokyo or Seybold release involving the Apallo G4 (up to 1.4 ghz) This wil tied over to MWNY '02 when the G5 will release.

YES! I'm once again disapointed that another rumor didn't materialize but since Apple didn't start it this time, it's hard to find fault with them. Can anyone say, kick the $#!T out of MacUser?!
I would like to know what all this P4 is faster than a G4 stuff is all about though. I use a Dual 800 Tower (never used a Wintel) but I can tell you that my Wintel using friends are always amazed by the speed when they come to my home office. (The Cinema Display gets 'em drolling too.) Besides, you people claim to be Mac fans, haven't any of you checked out this info on Apple's website? http://www.apple.com/powermac/specs.html
It clearly states that the G4 blows the P4 1.7Ghz out of the water!

Dont worrie... they will be comming soon. Apple will ship some new Pro towers soon. Is it that you guys cant wait a few days?, weeks, even months? I mean. My Quicksilver will last me a few days till they ship the new ones. (not that I am going to get one) How many of you guys are actuly on the market for a new Mac? Have you guys been holding out for a new Mac for the Appolo or something ?

So now I can rule out MacUser as a reliable source of Information.
We got excited and they got their extra 1000 hits.
But in the end, it's all hot air..
I realise that this is a RUMOR site. And its all in good fun.
But MacUser sells advertising based on Hits and so they
just made some money.
I wish there was a way to strike back..

I would say BillGates thought could well be true ... and it might be even longer until the machines appear?
MacUser is the most trusted and well read mag here in the UK. I honestly do not think they would spread such a rumor unless they were totally convinced that it was true.
And I have got no connection with the mag apart from being a reader and subscriber for many years.

Read the fine print: at Final Cut Pro and Adobe Photoshop, two applications which are specifically optimized for the g4 processer and altivec. Don't get me wrong, the (m/g)hz myth is real, but not by as large a margin as Apple would like us to think.(ie, a G4 800 is certainly faster than, say, a 1200 P4 (that's a random number.. i'm not sure if there is one at that speed), but not faster at most things than a 2.2 northwood, and probably not more so in most areas than a 1.7.
And before anyone starts throwing a hissyfit, I love macs, i've used them for twelve years, and i've never had a pc.

Barefeats have got a 1.8Ghz P4 and a dual G4 800, I'd trust Rob-Art Morgan's benchmarks more than Apple's marketing propeganda anyday. oh and it does mostly prove the Mhz Myth to be true for a photoshop, it even proves that for non realtime, photo/3d work the G4 can even smoke a P4 without using both CPUs or Altivec (allowing for the 1Ghz speed advantage of the PC).
Barefeats G4 vs P4 Benchmarks (http://www.barefeats.com/pentium4.html)
What it doesn't tell you is that a Pentium 4 processor can run 4 times as many Real Time Audio Suite plug-ins in Protools LE than an 867Mhz G4 can. That's a benchmark that proves it's RAW speed, not something that can be broken down over time, but realtime processing power.
search on the Digidesign User Conference (http://duc.digidesign.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum&f=24) for benchmarks, there's a lot of posts in different areas about the tests people have been doing on various machines.
Personally, any G4 is gonna blow away my Beige G3 for anything I use it for (mainly running Protools LE & software synths). I'm waiting for a way faster mac before I even start saving for a new one. It's very annoying to buy a computer that used to smoke all the PCs my friends had only for the Athlon XP, Pentium 4 and G4 to rocket to really high speeds with the macs only keeping with the current PCs at a very small number of tasks by using dual CPUs and Altivec instructions. a 1.2Ghz G4, G5 or whatever will be on my shopping list one day, I'm just not gonna even start saving for a new mac till motorola get their skates on and bring out some super quick CPUs that not only faster than the current models but significantly faster than PCs at everything. I never plan to go PC, I've put up with far too much abuse off £500 worth of nut's and bolts owning PC freaks over the years to join their badly designed, cheap and nasty little windows-centric world.
not that I'm in any way irrate over the situation :D

That is SUCH an unfair test; the video cards are different and they don't even know the full specs for the cards they were using. Also, comparing a DP to a single processor machine using programs that apperently don't support multiprocessing.
My question is, why doesn't Bryce 5 handle multiprocessing when it runs under OSX?

I don't mean to be all angry at them, but it is frustrating for many of us who are waiting to purchase a Powermac and just keep on having to wait. It's like dangling a juicy steak in front of a starving man who refuses to eat fast-food burgers (PCs).... and then jerking it away.

Is that the G6 that MacUser are saying will be released a week next Tuesday ;).
(Sorry, couldn't resist that!)
In my opinion, I don't really care if the next machine I buy is a G4 or G5, or even if it's 1Ghz or 1.5Ghz. I just want the best I can get on the day, and that it's not going to be overtaken for a couple of months. That's about all you can ask for.
I know whatever the next Mac I get, I'll be using it as my main machine in three or four years time. I've still got my 8500/120 running my Internet connection, and two printers! And I've got big plans for my G3/400 when it gets retired!
