Here is what I would like to see at MWSF 2003.

1- Monitor appearance should be upgraded. Bluetooth for wireless monitors should be integrated.

2- CPU should be upgraded to either IBM or AMD, Motorola has proved to be lazy.

3- Mice and Keyboards should use a bluetooth system as well.

4- iPod should have expanded hard drive. It should be able to play MP4, as well with other media files ( .mov,DIVX,.mpg, etc...) A high resolution COLOR screen needs to be added. Bluetooth is implemented here as well

5- A super slim, super powerful mini Tablet Mac. Around a 5-8 in. screen.
Bluetooth of course along with 802.11b and 802.11a integrated.

6- Integration of .Mac with this iTablet.

7- Ditch the Switchers. ( AD )

Correct me if I am wrong someone but a bluetooth monitor isn't exactly possible. Bluetooth is just another peripheral connectivity solution.. like infrared .. it will provide useful for things like mice and printers and the such but not monitors?

I may be wrong about that. Somewhere I heard it was fast enough to use with a monitor.

Bluetooth speed = USB

Maximum bluetooth bandwidth is about the same as USB.

A 1024x768 pixel screen in 16bpp colour refreshing 25 times a second (way slow) needs around 37 MB/s bandwith. USB is around 1 MB/s. Not going to work. Even Airport would not really work (11 MB/s). You might be able to make it work by having some sort of proprietary interface and backing store on the display and only transferring the changes, but even that would probably be too slow to use.

Much less than USB actually. You can expect sustained data rates on clear 2.4Ghz data paths with Bluetooth to be around 76k a second going in one direction only.

What I would like to see at MWSF...

I would like to see Steve Jobs and Bill Gates do one of the following at MWSF:
(1) Have a thumb war...
(2) Have a Beer Drinking Contest using imported German Steins...
(3) Have a contest to see who can sing the entire "Partridge in a Peartree Song"...
(4) Have a tobacco spitting contest for distance into the audience...
(5) Have a game of Pong on the oldest console system they can afford...
(6) Have a game of OS X Chess...
(7) Have a Stareing contest...
(8) Have a Stareing contest for their companies pinkslips...
(9) Give a Demo of what songs each has on their iPods...
(10) Talk about why each thinks MacRumors is the Best Site on the Net.

Actually, how about a new campaign: Think Porn.

We could have giant naked Steve posters all over! It would be great.

I'm not greedy,

My wish list:

1. 19" HD, 1ghz, 80g HD, faster bus iMac with superdrive= $2000.
2. 17", 1 ghz, 80g HD, faster bus iMac with superdrive = $1800
3. 17", 1 ghz, 60g HD, faster bus iMac with combo = $1500
4. 15", 1 ghz, 60g HD, faster bus iMac with combo = $1300
5. 15", 1 ghz, 60g HD faster bus iMac with CD-RW = $1100

GeoForce4 cards in the low ends, ATI 9000 (or better!) in the high (17" with Superdrive and up) end.

eMac = All speed bumped to 1ghz, with faster bus and better video cards, prices remain the same.

Built-in Bluetooth in all desktops/portables as of the end of January.

iPod = Keep it the same. Why futz with a winner?

Re-designed displays across the line, to fit with the current "snow" look. 15" re-intro'd at $350, 17" at $650, and new 19" HD at $1500.

And more BTO options!

Okay, so I'm a LITTLE greedy. :)

actually its not a bad idea if you take it a different way. put a bluetooth adapter in the display. that way you can have bluetooth on your mac if you own an apple display. no mobo redesigns required.

Not so good for laptops though. I still want a combined airport/bluetooth card as Apple did not put a PC Card slot on my iBook.

Displays

I would really like to see some new displays, like Thirteenva mentioned. New design, HD quality, widescreen format, and low price (maybe).

Also, really fast iMacs and eMacs would be shweeet. If the iMac got up to 1Ghz with a better video card and a widescreen display, Apple would have my $2000 right away.

Maybe some kind of upgrade to the iBook's too. Bluetooth, along with the TiBook's or better resolution on the 14 inch screen would be nice.

7- Ditch the Switchers. ( AD )

1) Others already covered this, but bluetooth is way too slow. I believe it runs at 1 mbps, compared to 11 mbps for USB (which is still way too slow). Wireless monitors may be possible using another standard, but its certainly not goign to be a cheap solution.

2) You can't just upgrade the CPU on a whim. AMD has nothing compatible with the mac OS, and IBM only has the G3. lets be reasonable when we are talking abuot things we would want. The IBM 970 looks promiosing, but its not even in production yet.

3) Bluetooth mice are a nice idea. But you still need a cable to charge them, or else you need to change the batteries all the time. not really the elegent solution apple wants. But we'll see. I'd say this is possible (if not all that likely in my mind)

4) bluetooth on an iPod? Maybe for wireless headphones (though other technologies may be simpler and cheaper). Certainly not for file transfer. it would take a week to transfer your files. remember how sllllooooowwwwww bluetooth is.

Color screen would be pretty cool. Larger hard drive is always good (though dependent on toshiba, its not something apple can really control)

5) Someone, somewhere tell me how a tablet is better than a laptop. it would be slower, more expensive, less portable and less useable (typing is so much faster than writing). There are some things I actually like about the tablet PC idea, but most of that is related to the OS, and not the machine. Tablet PC's are niche products. Even MS recognizes that.

6) what would .mac integrate with with this iTablet. .mac integrates with the OS, not the machine.

7) well, i kind of like the switch campaign, but I'd like to see apple take a multipronged approach to advertising. advertyise switchers, advertise creativity, advertise OS X. Apple only ever seems to do one thing at a time, and I think it lessens the impact of the advertising as a whole.

I want to see some kind of new hardware digital device. I don't really care what it is, just something that apple can do relaly well to make money with. Perhaps a way to wireless connect your stereo/home entertainment system with your computer (stream music and/or video wirelessly), or a really nice tivo type system that can be controlled wireless from the computer if you wish.

I say buy now unless you want to wait till about march or so. In january we'll most likely see imac/emac updates not powermac updates.

Yep, I agree. One more update, with a minor CPU speed bump, but major bus upgrade to prepare the way for the 970.

And we may even see a new enclosure for the Powermac when the 970 comes out, I'll bet...

I think there will be a upgrade in the PowerMacs in January, not necesairly for MWSF, but towards the end of January or begining of February. It seems that Apple upgrades their line of powermacs every 6-7 months or so.

It would be nice to see an update in the iMac. Like a few of you said, a 19" widescreen would be nice. It would be great if they put a L3 cache in the procesor and bumbed it up to 1Ghz. What do you guys think, is it possible to ever see a L3 cache in the iMac?...also, do you think an iMac (with out a L3 cache) running at 1Ghz, would come fairly close to a PowerMac DP 867Mhz in overall performance?

What I'd like to see is this...

1. This monitor thrashes all the apple offerings (apart from the cinema displays purely 'cos they look cool). If a company can make an LCD monitor with a 16ms response time (vs the 40ms of the apple monitors), a 17" 1280 x 1024 screen, a tiny footprint and manage to sell it for less than apple used to charge for the old 15" LCD, they need get this company to supply the LCD for their 17" model. Better specs and lower prices would pretty much put a new 17" LCD in the same price bracket as the old 15", they'd sell these things like hot cakes. I believe there's new health and safety laws coming in to effect that would make the current apple 17" (and possibly other models) too low to be ergonomic so a slight redesign of the monitors is likely to be needed soon anyway. They've been discounting the current models forever anyway.

2. Tycho, a guy on the Xlr8yourmac messageboard has done an excellent case mod that elimates the annoying fan noise on the MDD powermacs. Apple should do this officially by altering the case and using the same fans used in the article. It's possible to reduce the noise and number of fans and Apple arn't doing it.

3. Standardise on the Radeon 9000 across the range of towers.

4. I won't expect speed bumps yet but if they could manage a 1,1.2 and 1.4Ghz lineup sometime early spring it would be cool too.

I don't see how a modification to the internal design of the case would be a problem, all the parts are screwed onto the inside of the case and just need reworking to fit the different fans in from what I can tell. That will make a lot of audio people happy. So will fixing the mobo bug once and for all so soundcards work 100% with them.

I'd like to see digidesign do a demonstration of Protools 6 under OS X on stage at the expo, then announce it's shipping by the end of January. All the graphics companies have had their time in the spotlight at the expos year in, year out and got their software out for OS X. It's our turn now!
