This is my first POST in this forum so forgive me if this has been covered... Is it still a good idea and or advisable to ZAP the PRAM on the new Mac OSes by holding down the appropriates keys on the keyboard and restarting 3 times?

Also what about the old habit of rebuilding the desktop from back in the days.

PRAM was the term on old PPC Macs. Nowadays it's NVRAM.

There is no need to reset the NVRAM unless you have a problem. (And indeed, there was never a need to zap the PRAM regularly as "preventative" maintenance on old PPC Macs.)

IN fact, there is no need to do any maintenance as "routine" in order to keep your Mac running well. However, if you do have a problem, then there are things you can do.

As for "rebuilding the desktop" -- which was a troubleshooting technique in OS 9 and earlier: the closest parallel would be rebuilding the LaunchServices database, I suppose. But again, there is no need to do anything like that unless you have a problem.
