The Burj Al Arab (https://www.jumeirah.com/en/hotels-resorts/dubai/burj-al-arab/) hotel in Dubai is perhaps the world's most luxurious hotel, and the latest addition continues that tradition. The seven-star hotel is now giving 24-carat gold-plated iPads (http://www.businessinsider.com/dubais-burj-al-arab-hotel-has-gold-ipads-2013-5) from Gold & Co (http://www.goldandco.co.uk/index.php/2012-05-15-12-15-12/historic-2) to guests for use during their stay.

The iPads will act as a 'virtual concierge', offering information on restaurants in the hotel, as well as spa treatments and butler services. They carry the Burj Al Arab's logo on the back and they are available for purchase in the hotel's boutique.

A few years back it was the fad to gold plate emblems and other metal car trim. It just stuck to the metal though an electrical current and you sort of painted on the solution. So I don't think anyone had to take it apart, and since 24k gold is far too soft they probably re-plate these all the time. It was very thin and did not last because if you polished it the gold would wear down fast. Sort of a pimp thing to impress 8th grade dropouts.

I think they will have to disassemble the ipad. Aluminium oxide (which makes up the anodised layer on the surface of the iPads aluminium shell) is not conductive so it wouldn't be possible to plate it with gold electrochemically unless it had been stripped off leaving bare aluminium exposed. To strip it it needs soaking in something nasty like caustic soda or chromic acid, which wouldn't be good for the devices internals!

I guess it is good for people with nickel allergy. I got blisters on my hands before I got a plastic cover for my iPad.

It might be worth getting your allergies checked. There isn't any nickel on the iPads metal back, it is aluminium oxide. The oxide layer is not plated onto the aluminium in the way chrome or nickel plating is done, it is the actual surface of the metal itself that is converted in the anodising process. (Coloured anodising is done the same way, but afterwards it is soaked in a dye, which soaks into the porous anodised layer.)

Call me when they get platinum plated iPads, then we will talk.

I have invented a wonderful new transparent platinum-mithril alloy coating that is so fine that you cannot see or feel it. Once applied, the coating is impossible to damage.

I will apply this to your iPad for the modest sum of $10,000,000. The coating can be optically applied via email - no need to send your iPad by post.

(Disclaimer: coating should not be exposed to young children with no respect for authority).

Ah, interesting, thank you! In any event, I'm not actually a confirmed nickel allergic, I just assumed so, since it is so common. I also get red marks on the hands after prolonged use of my 2006 MBP, since they rest on the areas next to the track pad.

Well, I've been a resident of Dubai for over six years and I can tell you, it's all about the bling. I'm just here to make the tax-free money so I can afford my home country one day (Canada). But having observed the life here for so long, it's amusing to hear the comments from the ignorant back in the US and Canada.

Dubai doesn't have much oil. You aren't importing oil from Dubai. Abu Dhabi, maybe. But the US is on track for energy self-sufficiency possibly in a few years. So then you can blame your own corporations for getting gouged, not the Middle East. As it is, the US only imports 15% of their oil from the ME. Most of it comes from Mexico and Canada.

I agree the gold-plated iPad is tacky. But it's only a marketing gimmick. Just like the "seven-star" rating, which is made up. (I've had dinner at the Burj al Arab, it basically looks like an Egyptian whorehouse). Believe me, there are tons of people for whom such a thing is just a trinket, a nothing. The average middle-class westerner just cannot fathom how much wealth there really is floating around. Hint: less and less of it is in the West.

btw, the whole "starving in Africa" thing is a bit dumb as well. Most African nations far surpass the West in certain things like mobile phone usage and access, for example. They just skipped the whole landline phase and use their phones for absolutely everything, for cheap. Canadians and Americans get raped by their cell phone companies in comparison.

Not all is as it appears.

I've been inside the Burj Al Arab during one of my visits to Dubai (for a 'tour' mind you - I have not spend the night there). The tour itself was approx. €100,- and offered a tour through the hotels as well as a beverage in the top floor restaurant.

Awesome

----------

Let's not attack Dubai for creating Gold iPads please :P. The U.S. is spending Billions on War and as a result people are not only starving but dying.

I'd rather have Gold iPads then War & Destruction..

"The seven-star hotel is now giving 24-carat gold-plated iPads from Gold & Co to guests for use during their stay."

"They carry the Burj Al Arab's logo on the back and they are available for purchase in the hotel's boutique."

I'm confused...

for use during their stay.....

(I've had dinner at the Burj al Arab, it basically looks like an Egyptian whorehouse).
 What does an Egyptian whorehouse look like? I can't imagine there are any honest-to-God whorehouses (as opposed to discreet escort services) in Egypt as it's an Islamic country. Or do you mean a whorehouse in ancient Egypt?

btw, the whole "starving in Africa" thing is a bit dumb as well. Most African nations far surpass the West in certain things like mobile phone usage and access, for example.
Heh. I wandered over to water.org earlier today and learned that there are more people in the world who have a cellphone than there are people who have a toilet. I would rather go without a cellphone than a toilet.

Okay, I really have to wonder... What is the appeal of living there?

It all seems so.. fake to me. Like a theme park, only everything is really expensive and they can throw you in jail if you so much as fart in the wrong direction.

You say you're making tax free money... don't you have to pay tax on that when you return to Canada? And doesn't the cost of living in Dubai completely destroy any advantage of just doing whatever you're there back at home?

I just think... Canada? Or Dubai? and based on what I've heard, Canada wins by such a large margin that I can't imagine why you're there, unless you found a practical gold mine.

Well, I've been a resident of Dubai for over six years and I can tell you, it's all about the bling. I'm just here to make the tax-free money so I can afford my home country one day (Canada). But having observed the life here for so long, it's amusing to hear the comments from the ignorant back in the US and Canada.

I don't know about winglet but my husband works there. The appeal is the massive salary and living expenses are included. Now he comes home enough that we don't get any tax-free status but his contract specifies that his company takes care of any and all in-country taxes. If I were willing to move there, as US citizens, the first $80,000 is tax free. But that's a drop in the bucket considering the overall pay. I prefer to be near my grandkids so my husband works a rotation rather than going the full stay route.

Working overseas in many occupations is VERY lucrative. But you have to be the type of person who can adapt to differing cultures. Not everyone can do it. My husband is a petroleum engineer and has worked just about everywhere over the years. But we have a few friends who couldn't handle it. Mostly it's folks with young kids who prefer to stay here. However, we both love the money and the travel. I get to go a lot of places I most likely would never have gotten to had he been just here in the US. Most of those of us who do this retire early with a very nice nest egg.

So they've got some software on it. But that's not what makes my iPad mine. It's that it's configured to my mail and calendar and photos and phone book. Plus my news apps are configured to my subscriptions and my other apps are configured for me!

I wouldn't really want one while I'm there, I'd want their app for my iPad...
