View Full Version : iOS 7 Realistic Settings Concept (Added Messages, Music, Maps, Passcode, Home screen)

Don't worry, this is not one of those crazy and stupid windows 8 style concepts that I dont think Apple would ever do!

Here is what I think iOS 7 will look like:

http://f.cl.ly/items/1P3W0B302b1q3w0Z3y1c/iOS%207%20Settings%20Avenir.png

Toned down shadows and gradients, but not completely flat.

What do you think?

Not totally sure about the font but the overall concept doesn't suck.

Looks nice! The icons are a little too sparse but overall idea is good.

I really like the icons' distinctive shapes.

The uniformly square outline in iOS 6 and the overlaid 'reflection' are - to my mind - distracting visual noise which the brain has to filter out.

Looks beautiful, i would love iOS 7 to look something like this.

May 23, 2013, 10:14 AM
Very, very nice work! Definitely one of the few concepts that don't suck.

You may want to try Avenir Next Medium (if Avenir Next is the typeface you're using) or Avenir Next Demibold. Bold is too bulky in my opinion.

Great concept, only gripes are the aforementioned font and the gear icon by the "General" tag looks suspiciously like the Star of David...

May 23, 2013, 12:06 PM
1. The bottom corners aren't rounded. I can't decide whether I'd prefer them rounded or not, but looks good either way. Very minor point.
2. The font is just too 'bold'. Perhaps there is a 'thinner' version of the font available, or even a different font altogether.

Apart from that, this looks extremely good and very 'Apple-like'. I'd love to see how a few more apps would look, especially Clock with it's timer. Keep up the good work!

Not a fan. I want a new UI in iOS 7, not just new graphics. This certainly looks better than the current iOS (minus the font used), but the entire layout should change but still retain some familiarity.

This is one of the best looking concepts I've seen, now if they just add some quick toggles and a setting search bar at the top it will be perfect.

I think the sliders seem out of place. Flatten the sliders and I think it would look great.

I think the slide switches need and overhaul generally.
Think of how many of those setting you need to go in just to switch on or off.

To me the biggest thing setting needs is a new control that can handle on/off and go to more settings on one.

May 23, 2013, 09:25 PM
My first thought was the font is a little too heavy, but after looking at it some more, I think it looks pretty good. The other graphics look great.

I'd be really surprised if the system font changes from Helvetica any time soon. I think Mac OS will eventually be all in Helvetica too.

We've been seeing a trend with lighter weight font recently, but light fonts impact legibility, and ultimately, usability. But I would like to see this design with Helvetica.

Avenir is nicer but I see you used it as a thicker font, maybe go for the 'medium oblique' version or something ;) Love the concept by the way! Flat nad apple ish. Only thing I might perhaps do is give those icons different colours such as DND being purple, notifications being green to make differentiation a little easier

Nice job, OP. I think you're on the right track based on the rumors we've heard thus far.

I agree with some of the other posters that have said that Settings will have more utility (expose Bluetooth and Wifi toggles at the top level like Airplane mode, etc).

For messages, you're missing some of the common elements that exist today I think are helpful:

Date and time indicators for the beginning of exchanges
Delivered/Read indicators on latest message sent
Timestamp on latest message sent

I also wonder if they are interested in adding avatars like Messages on Mac or if they feel it is unnecessary or consumes too much space? Maybe they could add the avatar to the left of the person's name you're texting? These kinds of visual queues are helpful so that you don't message the wrong person, etc.

With the album open:
http://f.cl.ly/items/1z0h2j1V2o0e3y2X1y3y/iOS%207%20-%20Music%20Open.png

Key points:
• iTunes 11 style
• The Now playing button colour changes to the playing songs album art colour.
• New tab bar that gets rid of the visual clutter (this would be used in all apps, not just music). You can swipe left to access the other tabs. You can also tap and hold to change the order of them.

First off, it looks fantastic! Though I'm interested to see how this would work in landscape, considering how Apple have abandoned Cover Flow for iTunes 11.

I could really get used to an iPhone that looked like this, I would even settle for close. This is a beautiful representation of what a "flat" design should look like, and I really think that Apple will have something that rivals this in the way it looks and feels.

Great job putting this together. Is it June 10th yet? :apple:

I would love to see your take on the icons (Messages, Music, Calendar, Photos, Weather, Mail, Safari)! The app icons potential change has me more excited than it should. I think an app icon is like the cover of a book...and when they suck...I usually end up thinking the app sucks.

I think this mockup is drop dead gorgeous. For me, I would un-bolden the top title text in Settings, and that's pretty much it, I really hope Apple does a font that's like the one in the WWDC 2013 logo or similar to the one see here, it's modern, minimalistic, and follows Ive's design philosophy that everyone has come to love. I don't think they would do this. What about people who had thousands of artists/albums. It would take too long to scroll. Unless you added the A-Z back on the right hand side, or even the left side. But, even then, if someone had a massive number of albums/artists for one letter, to get to the middle might take a while.

But nice concept either way. Looks really good.

Toggles themselves are skeumorphic in nature since they emulate the workings of a physical switch. I'm curious to see if they even make the cut or are replaced by something else entirely.

This is sort of proof that people don't actually know what skeuomorphic means. Switches are not skeuomorphic because they provide a function. The definition of skeuomorphic is resembling a real thing without providing function. The leather on notes doesn't provide a function, but a switch that looks like a switch does.

It isn't "sort of proof" of anything. That's an oversimplification of the concept. It's not black and white, there are varying degrees. I would not argue that toggles are at the same level as faux leather and stitching, but they are still a reference to a familiar, real-world design as a cue to how they function. There is no reason for a toggle to be represented in such a way in a digital environment and it is by no means the simplest or clearest way of doing so.

Nobody would argue that the flipping animation of calendar pages was not skeuomorphic even if it is "providing a function". There are other ways to provide function without visual cues grounded in the physical world.

Keep in mind that the broader definition of a skeuomorph is "A skeuomorph is a physical ornament or design on an object made to resemble another material or technique."

I do agree that when most people are referencing skeuomorphic design with regards to the iPhone they are using a narrow definition of ornamental and without function (and rightfully so), but toggles are definitely skeuomorphic in a broader sense.

That is what I'd like to see, more than simple on-off or go to detail for each item in settings surely there is enough screen space to have on-off and go to details for each.

The message app looks a bit too much like a Winterboard theme. Maybe it's a bit too flat and rigid. Is would like the message app to remain friendly since we use it to talk to people. The heading font looks slightly too bold to me.

The music app in the other hand is GORGEOUS. It would make it a joy to use be music app again. Right now everything is list after list and opening the and choosing something I can't to listen to feels like a chore. Apple has to not be afraid of change. Not every tab bar needs icons and can be pill shaped text which allows text to be bigger and even more recognizable than icons and small text.

Image (http://f.cl.ly/items/1P3W0B302b1q3w0Z3y1c/iOS%207%20Settings%20Avenir.png)

Toned down shadows and gradients, but not completely flat.

What do you think?

This is exceptionally well done. Way better than anything else I've seen.

Looks beautiful, i would love iOS 7 to look something like this.

Not me. Because it still has settings all buried in one place. I think they should go to more of the way Mac OS handles it where app specific settings are in the app and only system wide settings are in the settings app. Which could drop being an app and perhaps be buttons on the task bar. One for networking type things, one for comm accounts and so on. You tap and a Launchpad like control board comes up. Or make it more a folder of mini apps so you are scrolling to heck like system prefs has it. And more local groupings with less in that "general" group. Apple is so keen on how accessible iPhones are but they bury that group under General and a ton of scrolling. ?????

The slider itself I dislike but the bounce (maybe a more subtle effect should be used and that for like when the phone is first booted or something should be used) but the passcode typer I love! It would be great to see apple introduce alternating numbers which ive seen on a few bank apps, where the numbers change around everytime so you can't trace it with fingerprints

The only thing I don't like about these concepts is the overly bold font for the contact name/app name header.

I was hoping that the font in the invitation was a hint at where Apple was going with iOS 7, a very thin and sharp/modern looking font. Graphically though, the mock ups are superb. Great job.

I would like to see the time stamps on all messages. Plus for groups who a message went to in detail (who and to what number/email). And keep convos together. If I send something to a group it is a pain that reply from one of them goes to a new thread.

Key points:
• iTunes 11 style
• The Now playing button colour changes to the playing songs album art colour.
• New tab bar that gets rid of the visual clutter (this would be used in all apps, not just music). You can swipe left to access the other tabs. You can also tap and hold to change the order of them.

You missed one detail that should be how it is in iTunes 11 as well.

A setting switch to show 'in the cloud' or not without having to go out of the app and dig around in settings. And with that the ability to stream without downloading on music, TV shows and movies.

And with that, if I'm home sharing that shows in the same screen not it's own (cause its essentially just another 'in the cloud')

But otherwise I agree that something more like iTunes 11 is needed for these three groupings.

----------

That is what I'd like to see, more than simple on-off or go to detail for each item in settings surely there is enough screen space to have on-off and go to details for each.

Avenir has been tucked away inside both OSX and iOS for at least the last few versions, and has been used in some marketing materials as well. Gizmodo did an article last year covering the evolution of Apple's system fonts, and their conclusion was that all signs point to some version of Avenir in the future. And I agree. It's a beatiful font. One of the things I miss most after giving up my JB.

Only since iOS 6, actually.

I've wanted to use Avenir in my app Sterling, but we also target iOS 5. It would be possible to have iOS 5 fall back to something else, but fonts are important and that much visual disparity between versions would be unacceptable.

That is horribly amateur looking and very child like. :o

may I ask what exactly makes you think it looks amatuer and childlike?

IMO it looks like the OP put a lot of time and finesse into it. Everything is well proportioned, the lines are clean, the fonts are of the same size, all the buttons are large enough for use by fingers but small enough to not be obtrusive.

it looks very professionally done, honestly, I invite graphic designers to tell me their thoughts if I'm wrong.

moreover, I don't see the use of childlike elements.. the font is professional, the colors are those that Apple uses on a standard basis, I don't see any references to cartoon characters, there's no grammatical or spelling errors, none of the words are shortened the way children like to do with text messages...

I think I'm missing something that you're seeing?
