A placeholder to honor the 10.7 and 10.8 tradition of spotting the small new features that go unadvertised… :)

Thanks to user Sky Blue, here's a compiled list of "little things" in OS X 10.9:

I'm not a developer but was reading through developer notes to see if I could make anything out and noticed this:

Messages
The video chat functionality has been removed from the Messages app in OS X v10.9, in favor of the standardized, iOS-compatible video chat functionality built into the FaceTime app. This change potentially affects developers in two ways:

The Instant Message Framework is no longer supported, and all methods return an empty list. Use the Social framework instead.
Multiway video chats are no longer supported.

So, does that mean no more Jabber, AOL, Google Talk, etc.?

It also looks like they're deprecating QuickTime as a framework over something called AVKit. Not sure what that's about.

From here:

I need Jabber audio calls! :(:(:(

Well, I'm not sure if that's what that means or not. Apple internally uses Jabber for its operations (at least when I did tech support for Apple a year ago), so that's another reason it would be odd for them to phase it out. I could see them dropping AOL support more easily . . . I am still a hanger-on to AOL chat with my mac.com address.

I don't care about anything bu tjabber, I have my own jabber server with transport into Skype already, I don't mind seting up any other..:)

Safari now has notifications when not opened so I assume that is across all apps. Means I won't be disabling NC in 10.9.

Question on OpenGL. It did not say 4.3 so I guess it is the three plus year old initial release?

Also can someone link me to he new activity monitor?

I would say you are most certainly right. In 10.8.4 Apple has 3.2 supported and very little 3.3. So it would make sense that they got 3.3 and 4.0 finished leaving 4.1, 4.2, and 4.3 left to work on. The good news though is that 4.2 and 4.3 shouldn't be too hard to develop. However 4.1 will be a pain in the ass for them as it poses significant changes.

Also be glad we at least got OpenGL 4. GL4 bring us all the new tessellation and the latest shader engine that all the developers need to make the latest games on the mac. 4.1 and 4.2 are minute. 4.3 however has some nice changes but no games support it yet.

Here is a list of changes from developer.apple.com (no NDA required):
From:
https://developer.apple.com/library/prerelease/mac/releasenotes/MacOSX/WhatsNewInOSX/Articles/MacOSX10_9.html

Core Image Framework Changes
Core Image now takes advantage of OpenCL on the GPU to perform image processing operations on recent Macs. It also adds additional standard filters (CIFilter) that perform common low-level operations that are used across a wide array of image processing tasks.

OpenGL Framework Changes
OS X v10.9 supports the OpenGL 4.1 Core Profile on Macs with GPUs that are capable of supporting its feature set. Read OpenGL Programming Guide for Mac to learn about choosing a profile.

OpenCL Framework Changes
OS X v10.9 supports OpenCL 1.2 using the GPU on recent Macs, including those with Intel HD Graphics 4000.

Carbon is not dead ( ;-):
Carbon Changes

Carbon.framework

ASRegistry.h
Added kASExcluding
Added kASImporting
Added kASMinimumVersion

Apples hardware accelerated video encoding/decoding framework VideoToolbox supports now H.264 levels higher than level 4.1.
https://developer.apple.com/library/prerelease/mac/releasenotes/General/APIDiffsMacOSX10_9/VideoToolbox.html
(hardware acceleration requires compatible GPUs)

QuickTime framework is deprecated.
Security.framework has improved support for TLS and SSL.

I'm way more interested in the Mac than iOS. Kind of sad it's more of after-thought than iOS now. I knew when it was presented first it meant iOS would take precedence. And it's kind of reflected in that we're not seeing as many people download 10.9 and post pictures, yet at least. Although, I guess a download and install takes more time than for iOS, but still I think iOS is where people's interest is at.

As a long-term Mac user, I'm most curious to see if some nasty bugs introduced in Lion and carried over to Mountain Lion are still there. I'm less interested in big features and more in just a solid, good operating system that works. I can live with linen and leather texture I don't like. The bugs are what annoy me. Things that would excite me would be seeing if there are any changes to TextEdit, QuickTime, etc.

Or little things that annoy me, like does the horizontal scroll bar in the Finder still cover the bottom item when you try to click on it (the bottom-most item is partially covered by the scroll bar but becomes almost totally covered when the scroll bar magnifies)? That happens to me all the time.

Couple of issues so far:

> Mail Apps not downloading mail from iCloud - Apologies, it has just started downloading emails, it took about 5 minutes for anything to happen.

> iBooks nowhere to be seen - Just read through the Release Notes. There is not mention of iBooks.

> Contacts looks very plain, and watered down.

> Notes was also giving me sync problems - Had to uncheck and recheck it from iCloud at System Preferences to make it work.

Cmd+F didn't display anything and produced a low beep. As you can see on Mk2's screen, there is a search box above the notes to the left. Searching there will only pinpoint the specific note that contains your search criteria, it will not however, display your search on the note - this means you may have very long notes like I do, and still have to scroll down.

The release notes only mention known bugs - a few in Mail, Safari, Maps, etc. It doesn't detail the content of the preview. My guess is that if iBooks had been included it would also detail a few of its bugs, but there is no trace of iBooks in the notes.

I'm using a rMBP so startups have never been an issue. It's hard to tell if it's faster.
Scrolling and overall animation fluidity on the other hand are massively improved.

Thanks to everyone who's posted pictures! I like a lot of the changes.

With offline dictation, does it give you any indication that the recording is sent to Apple's servers once you reconnect to the Internet? Can you use offline dictation while connected to the Internet, or does it only fall back to that if you're disconnected? Can you use it for actual documents or just short snippets?

That sucks. I hate the 3D dock, I've always used the 2D one. I hope the 3D dock disappears, I don't think it's something Ive likes given how iOS 7 went.

Fiddled around for two minutes. Noticed that you can now encrypt TM disks (may not be new.) on multiple monitors, the "menu bar" not in focus is translucent. It works very well. Can't believe it took them 20+ years.

please someone who use 10.9 if there is any difference with the new OpenGL 4!

OpenGL 4.1 adds new rendering features compared to OpenGL 3.2. Developers have to explicitly take advantage of those new features in their own code. Many of the new features are listed here (http://www.opengl.org/wiki/History_of_OpenGL#OpenGL_4.1_.282010.29), probably the biggest of which being GPU tessellation shaders.

So... someone with 10.9 and a rMBP... is scrolling in iTunes now smooth?

Some observations on an hour with Mavericks:

Grey linen has gone, some places like the login screen and notification center look plain without it.
Font used in the Finder looks a little different
- Mail is a new version (v7), but doesn’t seem any different other than a new popup on launch to add an account.
The dock looks super ugly on the left side compared to 10.8.
NC Do Not Disturb can be set from System Prefs and can be set to a timer like iOS
Game Center is still uggo
- Notes looks weird without the yellow lined paper
- Network Utility seems to have disappeared from utilities

System Prefs
Print and Scan is now Printers and Scanners
Mail, Contacts and calendars is now Internet Accounts and includes LinkedIn
Software Update is now App Store
Dictation can be set to offline use and live feedback

Seems pretty stable, i'm sure it'll evolve during the beta process.

I noticed that the power button on my MacBook Air no longer displays the menu when it's simply pressed down... instead it puts the computer to sleep. I have to hold it for a few seconds to get the menu.

I got this behaviour on my 2012 Mini a few months ago, you most likely can change this in Energy Saver Pref. Pane. (Allow power button to put the computer to sleep)

I don't like some of the changes from what I see here in screenshots, for instance, ugly Dock on L/R, Activity Monitor too plain (And where is the processes button?).

Hope they don't do the same thing as with iOS, man, that is Crap, but I am fine with my 3GS.

No 2D Dock on bottom, but yes on the sides. I looked through the plist and attempted running strings on it but didn't come up with anything.
You can probably make it 2D by setting a boolean via the Terminal. In ML it's:

defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean YES
killall Dock

2D dock looks good btw.

So running 10.9...

On 10.8 my VRAM is 512mb, which I thought was the limit on Intel with integrated graphics and 8gb RAM. But on 10.9 is shows this:

Image (http://s190.photobucket.com/user/langbj/media/huh.png.html)

1GB VRAM. Don't know if it's a mistake or what but it's interesting anyway...
Because your Ivy Bridge 4000 IGP supports OpenGL 4.1 and OpenCL 1.2 under OS X 10.9, and you have obviously enough RAM (with compression).

Apple improved the color management in OS X 10.9. This was necessary after the 10.8 ColorSync-fiasco.

Interesting how Calendar works.
If you block out travel time it doesn't sync to non 10.9 calendars. Haven't had the chance to check out iOS 7 but it doesn't block it out on 10.8 or iOS 6.

Wonder if that travel time is dynamic with traffic or not. Hrm.

So yesterday Federighi made a bit of a deal about smooth scrolling in Safari, Mail (thank god, finally), and so forth on the Retina MacBook Pro he was using for the demonstration.

So... someone with 10.9 and a rMBP... is scrolling in iTunes now smooth?

I always use iTunes in fullscreen, and I have around 1000 albums. Scrolling is a laggy, stuttery, horrible experience. Has 10.9 improved this any?

No, iTunes scrolling still sucks. I guess they need to update iTunes to take advantage of the new engine.

Or little things that annoy me, like does the horizontal scroll bar in the Finder still cover the bottom item when you try to click on it (the bottom-most item is partially covered by the scroll bar but becomes almost totally covered when the scroll bar magnifies)? That happens to me all the time.

Noticed this almost immediately. Thank goodness somebody at Apple had enough sense to fix this behavior.

I have the cMBP from last year, and successfully applied the VRAM hack you'll find here in the forums: I went from 512 to 1024MB (on the HD4000), so it is possible Apple have applied this more permanently. I certainly noticed the difference when using Parallels (Win 7 Pro), especially playing Portal 2, where gameplay was much smoother than before. Happy days :)

No because Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) is only allowed on mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones. Microsoft does not allow the use of it in an OS for desktops and laptops such as OS X. OS X can talk to Exchange though, only via a different way.

One feature I liked in expose that was removed in Lion/Mountain Lion was the ability to hover over a window, press space to magnify it, and then move between windows in their magnified view by pressing left and right on the keyboard.

Does anyone know if this is back?

In Mountain Lion for some reason this works with minimized windows that show up in App Expose but not for other windows. But the way it worked pre-Lion was that you could basically go through windows very quickly pressing left and right—hope I've explained it well enough.

Unbelievable. Can someone please submit a bug report or feature request to Apple about this? It's ridiculous that they took Find out in the first place and I can't believe it's not back in. Already submitted feedback a while ago on this for Mountain Lion, it's a constant headache for me and have heard and read for others as well.

A few multiple display goodies:

- A window is cut off on the secondary display like so: you drag the window between two screens and the mouse cursor is used as the divider. OS X will dim/make translucent the "secondary" portion of the screen, which will *NOT BE DISPLAYED* when you end the window drag. It just doesn't show on two screens.

- Two finger Mission Control on OS X 10.9 can also 2 finger swipe between spaces.

- I have no idea how to get the dock to pop up on the second display.

- Notification Center shows on both displays, but Launchpad does not.

- The smooth scrolling is absolutely brilliant.

I remember reading an ars technica article few years back (don't remember the OS release) about the major overhaul of QuickTime, when it transitioned to QuickTime X and that it would still take a few OS releases until QuickTime X would be mature. QuickTime as a framework is a pre-OS X one. It was deprecated in favor of QTKit, which allowed a transition from QuickTime into a 64-bit wrapper (which still used QuickTime, again, still deprecated through a helper tool in the background).

This was again replaced in 10.7 with AVFoundation, ported from iOS (written from the ground up there), and in 10.9, they've added AVKit which adds easy UI element support for this in Cocoa (think: adding a video to a window from Interface Builder).

i am on my 09 MBP. Runs smooths as silk. I also have heavy memory usage, but i think that Mavericks is intelligently using more ram and will free up ram when the system demands it. I could be completely wrong.

The power button on macbooks puts the computer to sleep instead of bringing up the power dialog. I am sure this was mentioned or in 10.8 but there is a messages button in notification center.

I already said this before in this thread, in 10.8 there is a setting in Energy Preference Pane>Allow power button to put computer to sleep.
Should be there in 10.9, it is the default setting to put it to sleep.

The Dock switches between the screens when you drag something down there, as if it were hidden. Try it out :D

I think you are right. I'm running it on my 09 MBA that only has 2gigs of RAM, and it's running pretty smoothly and figuring out how to best utilize that limited RAM. It's using 1.95gbs of RAM, with Safari, Mail, iTunes, Calendar, Keynote, Pages, and Numbers open. With all apps closed, just the OS uses up 1.53gbs of RAM.

What's the problem with holding option before clicking on Save, so that it acts as "save as"? How does that mess a work flow? You can also change the hotkey so that it is just as easy as hitting command-s.

When you use the show desktop gesture, it's more of a gradual effect, rather than an immediate one, which is nice.

Also, kernal task uses a TON of memory. The difference is huge compared to ML, where it used to use around 700-800MB. Maybe this is normal in Mavericks due to the power saving enhancements.

You might have more memory than me then. It never used more than 1GB for me in ML. I only have 4GB and it's now taking up 2.35GB right now. Also, the "memory pressure" bar has changed to yellow.

Edit: woah, I noticed Flux was taking up 80+MB of ram so I quit it and kernel task is now using 1.37GB down from 2GB+. The memory pressure bar returned to green. Putting this here in case someone else runs into the same problem.

Do minimised windows show up in the standard Exposé mode of Mission Control? Seems like this behaviour might be useful with the Mission Control changes. It used to work like this in Snow Leopard but it was gone with Lion, relegated to being shown in the single-app Exposé. I loved this feature as it made it possible to minimise windows to their Dock icons, keep an ultra-minimal Dock and still know what was open.

Any quirks at all with minimising windows with the new multiple screen behaviours?

Not only can a fullscreen app be put next to dashboard, as mentioned previously, but everything is fully independent, even dashboard itself:

Which means I can't get my window manager (Moom (http://manytricks.com/moom/)) to work.

Furthermore:

But, I wouldn't mind it in both places. They got bring it eventually.

Mavericks now supports fully 128 gig of ram (mentioned in Core Technologies Overview), I believe it is currently capped at 96 gig. Ironically the new Pro will not be able to hold 128 gigs of ram until 32 gig ram dimms are available, or are very pricey (haven't looked at availability). The previous gen with dual cpu had 8 ram slots.

Weird issue: preferences .plist files are wonky. So far I've tried to copy over preference files from Pages, Numbers and Moom from my 10.8 installation. No matter what I do the apps ignore it and open with default preferences.

I can change the preferences in the apps, quit and reopen them and the preferences I just set are retained. But no amount of deleting and replacing .plist files has any effect. This is weird, almost like preferences are being stored elsewhere or something.

All the app versions are the same across both installs so I'm sorta lost on this one. I want to say it's a beta bug, but when you think about it that doesn't make any sense with what's actually happening...

I've been reading that QuickTime is apparently deprecated. Can anyone elaborate more on this? Is this referring to regular QuickTime as opposed to QuickTime X?
QuickTime X and Final Cut Pro X use the 64-Bit AVFoundation framework (Mac OS X 10.6+) and other modern frameworks. I heard a rumor that 64-Bit iTunes uses the same frameworks.

The old QuickTime existed since 1991:
