I, too, have the same problem. Parallels just doesn't recognise the InstallESD as an OS.

There's a topic on the issue here on the Parallels forum: http://forum.parallels.com/showthread.php?287717-Running-Mac-OS-X-Mavericks-10-9-in-Parallels-Desktop-8-for-Mac-Virtual-Machine&p=688998#post688998

This looks promising:

Hi folks,

Apple has released Mac OS X Maverick 10.9 Developer Preview on June 10 and Parallels Team is currently testing its compatibility with Parallels Desktop for Mac.

Stay tuned we will update this forum thread as soon as we have some news!

I got it running via installing 10.8.3 in VMWare Fusion first and then installing the DP inside it.

It has some bugs though, going to System Report via the About This Mac for example logs one out of the current admin user.

I found this, but I've not tried it.

Pretty straight forward installing in VMWare:

1. Create a 10.8 VM
2. Open 10.9 DP.DMG
3. Copy Installer to Application
4. Launch

Does anyone know if logging into iCloud on 10.9 does anything that would effect iCloud accounts on 10.8? Really need to connect to iCloud to fully test, but don't want to screw with my other machines :D

Installing OS X 10.9 Mavericks Developer Preview in a blank virtual machine is not supported at this time.

However, you can upgrade an already existing OS X virtual machine to OS X 10.9 Mavericks Developer Preview. To do so, please follow these steps:
If your virtual machine is running, shut it down and click Virtual Machine > Take Snapshot. If anything goes wrong, you will be able to roll back the changes.
Click Virtual Machine > Configure > Hardware > Video and set 128 MB of video memory.
Once ready, start the virtual machine and download OS X 10.9 Mavericks Developer Preview.
Double-click the installation file and follow the onscreen instructions.

This thread is mainly for discussing using Mavericks as a guest OS -- the Parallels forums has many topics on using Mavericks as a host :)

I know, but this is about discussing using Parallels to run Mavericks in a VM, not running Parallels in Mavericks.

Here is a thread that may be more help to you: http://forum.parallels.com/showthread.php?287725-Running-Parallels-Desktop-8-for-Mac-on-Mac-OS-X-Mavericks-10-9
