iTunes Match library question

I am thinking of signing up soon. Currently I've got about 30,000 songs in my library and need to get rid of about 5000 tracks. Will I be ok if I simply delete the songs from my library but keep them on my hard drive? Does Match read the library that is in iTunes or all of the files in the iTunes folder?
