MSN For Tiger

Hey everyone,

I've been using a mix and match of Adium and MSN Messenger for Tiger for the past few weeks and I am sick of it. MSN basically sucks for Tiger (I've used Windows XP for the past 2 years and Windows 98 before that so I know) and Adium just doesn't work for me. Please, if anyone knows, what is the best alternative to MSN for Macintosh that will still let me talk to my buddies on the MSN Messenger system. I really do want webcam, audio, etc. Thanks so much for any feedback; I'll be replying regularly. :rolleyes:

Mercury Messenger is the answer to your problem. It's a great alternative to MSN Messenger and it supports webcams too. Enjoy!

I use Mercury for MSN webcam support, but it doesn't support audio. Skype had become my PC favourite, since it doesn't have the rubbish that MSN Messenger does these days, it's encrypted, has good audio and have webcam support through it's 3rd party API.

Unfortunately the Skype for Mac client doesn't have the same API, so no webcam support - yet.

adium doesnt let me send files over msn or yahoo messenger services. i finally got it to allow me send over aim after opening up some ports under system preferences...

He just said so, in the post you quoted. ;) He need, among other things, webcam and audio. Adium has neither.

I've never had problems sending or receiving files on MSN...
the only thing that annoys me is when someone sends you a file... the box asking if you want to accept - doesn't pop up ontop of whatever application you are working on.... you have to use Expose - as it will be hidden behind all active windows.

So if someone doesn't tell you they are sending you a file - you don't see the Accept box... I really hope they fix this soon! Is quite frustrating.

For what you're looking for, I would suggest Mercury Messenger. aMSN also support webcam, but it's in a very early beta stage IMO. You would also want to try searching for all the alternatives available. Take a look at the website posted in my signature, it has some useful information about messenger for Mac.

I currently use Adium as my main IM, and often have iChat open as well.
I love iChat - but hate that it is only AIM...
in Australia very few people use it - and most are now MSN. ICQ used to be big here...

but now will spend some time checking out your site - particularly aMSN and Mercury Messenger as I'd love the option of seamless video / audio chats with PC mates.

Same happens to me, I hardly ever use AIM. I mostly use MSN with Adium. And I've Mercury set up so when I want to use my webcam, Mercury does the job pretty well, but I hate the heavy Java interface.

Adium signs me off in pick hours, but Mercury is more stable IMO.

well, i don't know about Mercury but its slow on my system...Adium works fine for me and i've never got dc whatsoever during peak hours or anything...

It's probably my network, or ISP, but the thing is that it doesn't happen with Mercury, but Mercury is slow, that's the problem.

How about Yahoo Messenger? Has anyone used it before? From what i know it has webcam support natively for both PC and Mac version.

Yes, that's pretty cool actually, but I haven't try it myself since I don't use Yahoo often, and it's still missing a lot of features that Windows users have. Have you seen that banner ad on top of MacRumors? we don't get free PC-to-PC calls... someone correct me if I'm wrong.
