I'm sure this is a nice card, but doesn't it seem a bit pricey compared to what you can get for $200 on the PC side of things? I can't find a dual DVI 9600 on Newegg, but a 9600 Pro AGP w/ 256 megs goes for well under $100.

Then again I guess it's been like this for a long time. :( :)

The US$199.99 Radeon 9600 PRO

Wow, $200 for a graphics card that wasn't even considered very good when they released the original PM G5 (Over two years ago). Isn't this review a little late?

Yes. This was a budget card for a PC two years ago. Stuff like this is really bad adverse publicity for the Mac platform. Same price gets you a Radeon X800 GT or GeForce 6600 GT - a ramped up version of standard PowerMac card!

Well, except that PC users are paying the same price for this card. (It's actually slower than the 9600XT that came with the Power Mac, because the memory is clocked slower, but I suppose twice the VRAM would be helpful in a few non-gaming areas.)

Assuming of course PC users are buying this dual format version and not the $100-ish PC-only price :)

They were selling the Radeon 9000 Mac Edition for $150, so the 9600 Pro with 256 MB is quite a steal, if you consider that, or the Radeon 7000 PCI for $130.

How do you review a video card without testing games?

My iMac G5 Rev. A's nVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 w/64MB RAM is great -- until I play games. Then the crappiness is plain for all to see.

They guy also complains incorrectly how he would only need an "adaptor" if his card had VGA but since the card has DVI he needs an expensive "converter." Wrong. It's $94 to go DVI -> ADC, but $299 to go from VGA -> ADC.

Also incorrectly alludes to saying the video card really improved QuickTime HD trailers, when it's really the muscle of the CPU to decode them that is needed, not the GPU.
