Hi all.

I'm wondering if the community here could help me price a damaged macbook air. I have a good friend that would like to buy it from me, and since he's a good friend I'm not so interested in getting the best deal I possibly can, but just a fair price; his motivations are the same.

Machines with a similar spec go for around £500-£600 on ebay.co.uk (I won't list all the specs here, but it was new around 15 months ago.) Unfortunately, it was damaged in a bike crash. The track pad is smashed, and the case is bent. Photos are attached. Everything works fine, however, although the click button is a little temperamental: it works, but only on some parts of the area it should, and only on solid surfaces (e.g. tables, but not laps).

I'm not sure what price to go for, so I thought I'd solicit opinion here. One way to price it would be to get a quote for repair and deduct that from the £500-£600 price on ebay, so another question is what sort of ballpark figure that might be. (I won't actually get the repairs done myself; it's up to my friend whether he wants to do that, or just use the machine as it is.) I should also mention that I'm prepared to offer my friend a 100% refund if it dies within 6 months, and 50% if within 12 months.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

You can buy replacement trackpads off eBay for less than £30 and the repair looks relatively easy going by http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+MacBook+Air+13-Inch+Mid+2012+Trackpad/10962/1. At least that would make the computer fully usable.

The case itself doesn't look too bad. I don't know whether it's possible to bend it back into shape? You would have to dismantle the computer to avoid damaging any of the internal parts, but you'd have to do that anyway if you were buying new parts. http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/MacBook+Air+13Inch+Mid+2011+Teardown/6130/1

Thanks both. I think I'll contact a local repair store and see what they say.
