Hey Guys,
Just ordered a new Macbook Air. I am looking to buy a
sleeve/case for it. After browsing through the forum,
I have narrowed my choices down to 3. Can you guys give me
some feedback on these choices?

Agreed. I originally was looking for a snap case but I realized it takes away from the beauty and thinness of the air.

I got an Incase Deluxe Sleeve and its perfect. Just the right amount of padding with a storage compartment and a charger connection zipper.

Comes in all different sizes and in white or black. I highly recommend it.

I've always just had the machine naked, and take EXTREMELY good care of it, and then put it in a case if I need to take it around (As I did for classes).

My perfect sleeves were:

http://jolioriginals.com : Leather, very good quality.
http://www.colcasac.com : The materials used is very durable, and efficient at protecting the machine.

I would go with a Colcasac sleeve.

Same here, Apple designed the MacBook Airs to be really strong. No need for an ugly hard case.

And +1 for the Joli originals sleeves, love mine!! :) They are not cheap, but totally worth every cent, if you are looking for something cheaper you can also look at foof sleeves.

If you're that worried about scratches, just get a skin. Transparent and doesn't look like there's any protection on it.

At the risk of repeating another's suggestion, I've always used RadTech's sleeve and screensaver combo since my first iBook. I used the combo on my MacBook Pro and now on my second MacBook Air. I just put it in my soft briefcase and I'm good to go. It protects from scratches, not drops. I don't use anything on it when I take it out of the sleeve. Their web address is www.radtech.us. Give them a look. Highly recommended by me (not a sponsor).

Enjoy either way!

I ordered a Air for my daughter which is due to arrive on Friday. We went to BestBuy this weekend and talked about Sleeves and Cases with the Sales Rep. She suggested a Sleeve or case for transport only. I don't know how true this is, but she told us that a part of the Apple design is heat dissipation through the aluminum body as well as the unit's cooling fan. She suggested to not use a skin, so I suggest to be careful and just go naked.

I have the clear spec for my first macbook air (13). It is fantastic. It will protect it very well and not damage anything. I then take it and it slips right into my memory foam sleeve. I drop that into my backpack for travel. It does not add any real thickness to the air and frankly offers great protection. They have those plastic keyboard covers. I tried one but could not get used to it. I might try again.

I haven't had a case on my last 3 Air's but I have used a BestSkinsEver skins.

They just came out with a full body matte clear skin that looks and feels like the MacBook aluminum but protects it.

I keep it wrapped all the time and in a bag while traveling, best thing with the skin is no added weight and it still looks sexy.:p

If you are looking for cases, I would personally recommend Alex from Picasolab. http://www.ebay.com/sch/picasolab/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686 I got his case for my macbook air and its truly very beautiful and I definitely treasure my case :). It is well constructed and definitely keeps my macbook air safe. I plan to get one for my wife soon too.

If budget is a concern, I would recommend the the Vatuka cases from ebay; as that was the other case I was looking at. Those look nice as well.

The Speck case does a good job of protecting the Air. It doesn't add much bulk and has a nice rubbery texture which makes the Air a bit more comfortable to hold, especially along the thin edges.

The downside is they crack. Mine has just done that, but it did keep the Air immaculate for 6 months.

well that's interesting about the snap on case! :O
I wanted some extra protection so I got an ipearl case, it looked great and it was affordable, though it made me a bit worried when it kept making a creaking sound when I opened up my screen, so I got rid of it all together, I travel a lot and I would love to have a case around my laptop to prevent scratches!
I did find a nice sleeve though :)

ok firstly

you have 3 diffrent options a case (speck) not a huge fan of em.
2nd is a leather sleeve
and 3rd is a cotten sleeve

all 3 are fairly diffrent

ok if you really like a snap on case i got mine at
mymacbookcase.com (http://www.mymacbookcase.com)
and there awesome case and look good and good ventalation... and more stylish in my opinion

2nd if you were to go with one of the sleeves go with the 3rd sleeve
it will provide more comfort protection for your mac,
easily take it in and out your mac

and you can place it below your mac to provide a little cushion while using it..

best of luck!

sl33py, Thanks much for sharing your recommendations. I like the picasolab, especially after read and watching info on it. Unsure which color to choose.

Is the mac air fully enclosed in the full size models? It pretty much looks so.

The Vatuka case also looks nice, Like the full zipper enclosure.

Leaning towards the picasolab one for now.

I like leather... mainly due to the fact it has some qualities of preventing some initial moisture from getting in. Also, the padding is perfect, sleek but still provides safety.

Like the look too. These are the only cases/sleeves I buy for the past 4yrs...

I'm looking for the most minimalistic sleeve out there. It shouldn't add much weight or space to the MBA 13" and it should be a slim and light material with pretty much a "skinny" fit. Any recommendations? Thanks.

I went with the stm grip hardshell case for my mac air

http://bmimages.jr.com/productimages/BGS122010K01.PNG?CELL=325%2C325&QLT=85&CVT=jpeg

http://www.amazon.com/STM-Hardshell-Minimalist-13-Inch-122-010M-01/dp/B008RJU1QE

It has microsuede lining on the inside, so its not like the plastic is touching the mac air directly for the bottom and lid. This was the main reason why I bought it. I did not want plastic brushing against my mac air directly since a previous cell phone of mine was scratched badly from the dust that got in.

The outside is not flat/smooth, but grooved. You can look at the picture more closely to see what I mean. I personally like the feel of it.

Three cons on the top of my head are that 1) it can be difficult to take off the case since the plastic sides that clip onto the mac are very tight 2) this isnt a con to me, but it covers the apple light on the lid. I actually like that since ppl wont really know that I am using a mac from looking at the back side. And lastly 3) the case piece for the lid can be heavy enough to make the mac either open up or close depending on the angle. If you open the lid too much, but before it reaches max angle, the lid may fall back to the max angle. If you have the mac air at like an angle smaller than 30 degrees, the mac air will close itself.

Hey guys,

Just joined. Bought a bran new MBA 13. I'm speechless. What a machine! Been with PCs over 20 years, good god, why I waited that long to taste a Mac? Wow!

I'm one of the many still asking myself if I should buy a skin/case or not. Specks is real nice but also does seem to have so-so reviews about cracking and all. I don't mind buying a 50$ if it lasts. Hard to know also if people placed their computer during several hours under a Florida-Sun fully shiny day.

In the other end, protective cases are not rocket science too. So..... I looked for ... (Hope I will not be flamed), cheap copies

Amazon (http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B005SZUMDM/ref=s9_simh_se_p147_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB&pf_rd_s=auto-no-results-center-1&pf_rd_r=1ZHRVEBGSQR8EA00QK21&pf_rd_t=301&pf_rd_p=478281791&pf_rd_i=STM%20Grip%20Hardshell%20Minimalist%20Case%20for%2013-Inch%20MacBook%20Air)

This one looks damn 99% identical to Specks. Only issue is that it does not fit 2013 models. Again, no rocket science here too, what about drilling a hole for the 2nd mic? I mean, come on, not that so big a deal right? We are talking about 10$, shipping included.

So, am I the only one looking for cheap version? I feel like the guy buying a Kraft dinner at the store... anyway.

Any1 with such experiences?

Hey, congratulations on your new MacBook Air. Like you, I switched from PC's (15 years), and this is the best computer I've used.

Have you tried the Kuzy case? It fits the 2013 MacBook Air, and is about CDN$ 30 on Amazon. I have been using it, and it works very nicely, and also makes the MacBook look very sleek.

We adore the TwelveSouth BookBook for our laptops. Incredible quality.

I'm a fan of these, too.

My old MBA used to simply travel in my briefcase, sometimes in a padded A4 envelope, - and survived unscathed.

However, for some time, I had been keeping an eye out for a good quality, elegant, leather case.

Thus, more recently, I have bought a few cases from the Twelve South company, their BookBook products (which were recommended on this very forum).

The BookBook sleeves are designed to look like a somewhat battered, old style leather covered book, and are actually made of leather. They look terrific, and offer excellent protection. I got one for my iPad mini, and have been very impressed by it, and so, have bought others as well, for my MBA.

Love the thought and look of the Joli, but I don't travel with mine enough to warrant a $100 sleeve. I have an iCarbons skin on the bottom and keyboard to protect from scratches anyway.

I think I'm going to just get a Targus Quash sleeve for $15 from Amazon for travel inside my backpack. I use it (the backpack) both for school and travel and that's the only time the MBA leaves my house anyhow. Just need something that inserts from the top so I don't have to take the case out and then take the Air out of it.

EDIT - ordered it, will see how it turns out.

It might even leave room for a cased ipad mini in it since it's designed for full-size (or full thickness) laptop. We'll see..won't have one until the 2 is announced, or at least until Christmas.

I doubt a magnetic closure on a laptop sleeve would be powerful enough to disrupt the internals...

Waiting on this to come in from the (outpost of) glorious People's Republic:

Looks cool enough, and with the relatively low price and paypal/ebay protection, what's the harm in trying? Don't think it could be any worse than a speck case, and I do like carbon fiber skins.

Okay, ebay link posted two comments below. 11" 'carbon fiber' hard case from ryanshop in Hong Kong.

$29.99 each, with free shipping from HK, roughly 10 days to get here.
Not carbon fiber per se, but a 2 piece 'polycarbonate plastic fiber protector'. I.E., plastic shell with molded top imitating carbon fiber. Similar to the case from ion-factory, but at roughly 40% the cost.

Bottom piece looks to be similar to speck satin case. You know, a finger print magnet. Maybe not quite as translucent.

Top piece is made to look like carbon fiber, and it is much more protective. It is a stealth case, which means you cannot see the apple shining through. It's also my preference.

The top and bottom seperate pieces are held on by roughly four tabs apiece gripping either the corners or sides of the screen and/or body of the Air. The bottom piece required me to lengthen the left hand cutout to accommodate the second microphone on my 2013 model. Accomplished with a decent pair of scissors and a bit of brute force, but the alteration doesn't draw attention to itself.

Not real carbon fiber, so the case isn't bullet proof. I'd say it's lighter and thinner than the Speck Satin case, and probably doesn't offer as much protection for an actual drop or fall. But it may offer some limited protection against the dreaded corner dent. And the carbon fiber top piece doesn't show prints or smudges at all. Take that, Speck!

Fit and finish is decent. Not the most snug case; but holds on well enough, and is easily removed and reinstalled. And if you're super anal-retentive, it can also be used with even a carbon fiber skin on the the top and bottom for dual fake carbon fiber protection.

I think it looks pretty good, all things considered. People will definitely think you spent more than $30 on this. It's a stealth case, which means you can't see the glowing fruit through the top piece. And despite it being very thin and light, it does offer protection against scratches and maybe less severe drops and falls. I won't think twice about throwing this inside of a briefcase or backpack.

Hopefully my crappy pics are included, despite my SLOW office internet connection. If not, they'll be included later on from my home. Keep in mind, the kit does not have the carbon fiber skin you see on the palm rest and around the keyboard; I've got a fiber skin on my Air underneath the case.

I'd like to say that this case will be just fine for the average consumer with its capabilities for the price, but that would then mean mine is less special. So, DO NOT BUY THIS CASE!;)

I just picked up a Thule Gauntlet. It has a very nice, durable feel and my 13" MBA fits perfect.

Nice!! Did you receive it? I'm thinking about getting a smooth one for my iPad mini, the grey one looks quite awesome. One disadvantage, if I like it I'll have to get one for my MBA too ;)

I just got back from a trip out of town, so I'm slow in answering - my apologies! I did receive both the MBA sleeve and the iPad mini sleeve and love them! Especially the mini's sleeve. The leather is so soft & the fit is perfect. I realized that for traveling, I would be better served with a sleeve/case style with a shoulder strap for the MBA, so got the Waterfield case from sfbags.com for that. The mini in its Joli sleeve slipped perfectly in the case's side pocket, so it worked out well.

Great thread and some very helpful post, I especially like the RadTech ScreenSavrz.

I have been in search of an ideal MacBook Air sleeve, while there are many nice options here. The Drake Sleeve is a nice option but I like an elegant blend of waterproof wool tweed and leather.

Thus far I have found the Cherchbi 13″ Laptop Sleeve, Herdwyck:

Any other tweed & leather MacBook Air sleeve options out there? please post them.

I've read that the Air won't close with that Radtech Sceensavr in it, would you mind posting back regarding that?

I am looking for the best hardshell case for my 13" MBA... :D

Any thoughts regarding Speck 13" SmartShell Satin vs Radtech STM grip vs Moshi iGlaze ?

Also, could some owners confirm if the Radtech ScreenSavrz fits perfectly inside the 13" MBA?

I've always been a Zagg skin guy with my Macs, but I went with the Moshi iGlaze translucent with my new Air and love it. Yes, it's expensive but very well made and you can barely tell there is anything at all on the Air.

Does it cover the 2nd microphone hole? If so, does the recording quality change?

It does cover both microphone holes, but there is a slight gap between the case and the MBA there. However, I couldn't tell you if it's functional or if the quality is altered. I've never had a use for a microphone on a computer before, and wouldn't know how to test it. Sorry.

You could for instance download for free AudioNote LITE from App Store, record your voice with and without the case, and compare the results... :)

I bought one of the 'Acme' laptop sleeves from the Apple Store, for my 11" Air. It seems very well made. The only thing is that it's incredibly snug when trying to slide the laptop in to the case.. maybe it'll stretch a little over time.

Seems really nice though.

The good thing about this sleeve is thieves won't ever imagine there is a MBA inside it... :D. So your wife should be safe... :p

Sounds like a false rumor, just received mine in and it works great. You just have to make sure you order the correct size.
