Get an Apple TV and use AirPlay Mirroring.

You need a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter cable. Apple sells them directly, or you can pick one up from Amazon:

But the 2013 MBA doesn't have a mini display port. Would this adapter still work?

You can also use any Mini-Displayport to HDMI cable, as the Thunderbolt port on your Air is backwards compatible with Mini-Displayport.

you can also use a straight mini displayport to hdmi cable. i found it to be more reliable than using an adapter.

Just to be clear, there is no need for an Apple TV if you have these cables?

Correct. The Apple TV would just allow you to this wirelessly.

That's correct - provided you're OK with a wired connection.

The wired connection will be superior to mirroring over Apple TV - it turns your TV into a second monitor, with no lag.

FWIW, Mavericks will let you use an AppleTV connected display as a second monitor.

Yes I know - running Mavericks. But a cable is cheaper than an Apple TV and the connection is better. Obviously the Airplay connection is more flexible though. All depends on your needs and situation.
