Ive not tried it but it should work with the ipod because the changelog includes the following:

* Added option for H.264 Baseline (suitable for iPods)

Handbrake is my new favourite app! Is there gonna be any difference between h.264 and MPEG-4 on the iPods screen?

I've found on the iPod screen it's not noticeable, but because you can use larger resolutions with MPEG's they look much better on the TV

Well, that is strange. H.264 is supposed to scale all the way up to HD. I would have thought H.264 would be both higher fidelity and more efficient.

There is no way the ipod is going to play HD or anywhere near it. I think he means the video processor can handle higher resolutions of mpeg 4 video than h264.

I think it's strange that you can play MP4s at a higher res as they usually have a higher bitrate. Shouldn't it be the other way around, as H.264 allows for lower bitrates at a better quality?

Indeed, I know iPods probably won't be doing HD resolution anytime soon. But I think you comments clear both the original post and mine as well. Thanks!

Perhaps the iPod doesn't have the muscle to decode H.264 on the fly at higher resolutions? H.264 certainly takes a bit longer to ENcode..

I would disagree, seeing that this version came out last week I would call it "new". as for your search suggestion, I have only found a brief mention by clayj who also refers to it as "new" and hardly goes into any detail about it.

Hey, I didn't know there was a new version of handbrake out, it's threads like this that help everyone know about new products and software updates.

God bless HandBrake. I've been using it for the best part of 2 years now. It's never failed me. It's cost be a little bit though, I've just had to buy an extra 300GB hard disk :)
Still... not complaining. I got a new Maxtor 300GB SATA-150 for £60 delivered!

So; 250GB + 300GB + 250GB external LaCie d2 = 800GB. Whay, I'm nearing my first terabyte!

Well it seems all the issues I had with the last release have been corrected:) :)
