By the way. This thread is pretty old so the above poll is no longer relevant.

I've downgraded this post to a simple list of friend codes. Simple is better.

The list has more friend codes than the maximum amount you'll be able to enter in your roster. You might want to pick friend codes close to your timezone first. Names at the bottom of the list have been submitted more recently so there are better chances that those newer players are still playing.

The column I titled "DS Name" makes reference to the name you entered when you first configured your DS. I'm prety sure it's the one Mario KArt is gonna use. It can be changed in the settings of the DS.

Edit: DS Name can be also be directly changed in the Mario Kart "Option" -> "Edit" menu. (Limited to 10 characters)

Do you guys think that Friend Codes should be kept secret? What is the risk of having it displayed online?

I don't have a problem with my Friend Code being displayed online.... I don't think hiding it would serve much purpose, because we -want- people to get to it, and there's no meaningful way to police who joins and who doesn't. I guess we could make people jump through some hoops to join, but that's a hassle for everyone, and only deters the lazy troublemakers. And besides, how much trouble can you cause on this game? The best you can do (that I know of) is to drop out of races that you are losing. And this is remedied by just removing the offender from the list. Am I right in assuming that both parties need to have each other's friend code to compete against each other in friend mode?

Any idea for a League official name?

I don't have any ideas for an official name yet. However, just discussing a MK group name makes me recall with fondness Phi Koopa Troopa, the fake fraternity my friends and I invented in college. We were definitely into our Mario Kart. I may have to see if I can resurrect PKT. :)

Edit: Just got my copy of the game. (I had it pre-ordered) I'll set-ip up tonight when I get back from work (10:00 PM EST)

^_^

Congrats!

Agreed. I only mentioned it because the forums admin at Nintendo.com recommend not posting it. I guess it has more to do with risking having old pervs joining kids in game and starting talking funny. :D Just wanted to make sure there weren't ant REAL technical risks.

Can anyone tell me whether I can use my DS tunneling through Powerbook ethernet connection via the airport card? Or do I have to own a standalone router such as Airport Base Station? I hope I can because it would be a shame to have to spend over $100 just to play Mario Kart, when xlink kai let's me play my PSP online with my current setup.

Sorry if this is off topic, but I already searched the wifi thread and didn't see any answers to this question.

Thanks

and if any of you manage to pull yourselves away from the game itself in order to share your online impressions, either in this or in another thread, I'd be happy to read them.

I don't know, but this was something I was considering doing myself, except with my Mac mini. I have a wireless router set up, but because I am using WPA encryption, I will have to change my configuration to play online. I'm planning to look into it for at least a few minutes tonight when I get home, and I'll let you know how it goes. If it's not a quick thing, I'll probably just reconfigure my router and the machines that use it.

My impression, from what I've read about this game, is that there isn't any in-game chat at all. No voice chat due to technical limitations at this point (my understanding is that it would slow the game down), and I haven't read about any text-based way of chatting in this game, either. Has anyone heard anything different? Did the Nintendo.com forums admin give a reason for not sharing the friend code on this game specifically? I can see it being more of an issue for younger gamers on other games that allow in-game communication, for exactly the reason you mentioned, but I'm not sure I know of any argument against sharing the friend codes for Mario-Kart DS in particular.

I think they originally planned to have in game text chatting but it might have been dropped somewhere along the way. I'm sure I read about it on some Nintendo DS website.

Nintendo did not give any reasons about not sharing the Friend Code. It's simply a warning posted at the top of thier forums page. Here is how it reads: "Remember to NEVER reveal any personal information in chat groups or forums. Please also do not reveal Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Friend Codes on forums."

I've read conflicting reports about your code being the same for all game or game specific. I'll dig for more info.

Hello fellow Mario Kart fans. It looks like many of us will soon be happy owners of Mario Kart DS.

It could be fun to play against each others online from time to time.

We could use this thread to trade "Friend Codes" and schedule Races.

I'll update this first post with a list of MacRumors members who want to join the League

Next Race: To be announced

No problem with that, as there is no chat, so no one can just keep chatting and bugging you with foul language. There is no way to find out your personal info via friend code? right?

Q2: Any idea for a League official name?

Suggestions so far:
- MacRumors Mario Karting League (Very self explanatory albeit not very original) [srobert]
- Something in the lines of "Phi Koopa Troopa", a fake college fraternity [Agilus]

Why not.

PM me your all your info (DS name, MR name, Friend code and Timezone) and I'll add it to the list in the first post.

My code is 008649 401456.

Praxis, I entered your frind code in my DS but it told me it was incorrect. Maybe it has something with the Nintendo WiFi connection having problems right now.

Edit: Typo. Corrected.

I was playing around with photoshop and made some logos. Since the MacRumors logo on the site is un-copy-able I traced it in Illustator and used it in the logo. Here's a big and small version. I sort of like the text lowercase, but I can change it if needed, just some rough work for now.

I can't wait to play Mario Kart DS online...come on Nintendo...put up more servers! :D

GFLPraxis

It's not working for you? Works fine here, if you give it a minute or two to find some players (granted, it should find them much faster) and set up the game.

Unfortunately, I was unable to get MK to work with my Mac mini's internet sharing. The DS could see the wireless network, but it was complaining about not being able to connect because it was either too far away or couldn't get an IP from DHCP. Instead of messing with it all night, I took the easier route and just switched my router to use WEP.

As for my impressions of the games I played online with Praxis last night, I'd have to say that the experience was great. The only thing that I missed was being able to talk to him between games, because I would have enjoyed going over some of the highlights. It was definitely exciting, and playing against a worthy competitor (as opposed to the computer) is always fun. I think it's really cool to see different people's strategies and strengths (for instance, Praxis was very good at nailing me with green shells and bananas, especially when he was ahead), and I'm excited because, even at this early stage in the game, I'm beginning to see the higher-level strategic thinking that will go into each race as we all get better.

As for the gameplay differences induced by certain missing items and a lack of item dragging, I'd have to say that it didn't bother me. It just felt like a different mode, sort of like a Double Dash mode. Playing this way just requires different strategy, and the same timed item dropping skill required in MK: DD.

As an aside, I think I love the overhead map. I can't use it that effectively yet, but it's a great aid, and a suitable replacement for a rear-view mirror (although toggling to one would have been a nice addition).

I think I'm going to buy this game today. I'm hoping the graphics are at least somewhat better than they appeared in IGN movies which made MK's 3D look like Space Harrier quality, but if it's fluid and fun that'll be the deal keeper.

I'll bet I can get MK to work with my airport card in sharing mode. If all MK is doing is going on the internet and not using an adhoc mode to tunnel, as does the PSP through xlink, then there should be no problem.

My powerbook worked fine with my Mac mini sharing. I don't know why my DS had trouble. My best guess right now is that my Mac mini has a wireless G card, and the DS uses B, as I have seen people on various sites saying the DS only works with B. This doesn't explain to me why the DS could -see- the Mac mini network, but I'm not an expert on how wireless technology works. :)

I just don't know how to tweak the DHCP settings in Internet Sharing so that the Airport gives your DS an IP address that it can use. My DS had no trouble seeing the network I made for it. DHCP just wouldn't give it an IP address.

For anyone on a problematic Netgear router (like mine, a WGR614, no v# after the name) you have to give the DS a static IP address. Here's the setting I got on another forum:

DS IP: 192.168.0.5 set static and in the DMZ

And in the DS:
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
Mask: 255.255.255.0
IP: 192.168.0.5 (This has to match the IP you gave it in the router)
DNS1: 4.2.2.2
DNS2: 4.2.2.3

This worked for me, I hope it helps other folks. Online is a real blast, though I wish I could tell my fellow players "good game" at the end of a race. This is great!

God so many toys I dont where to start. Can aspiring Mac switchers like myself join in on the fun; although I gotta wait another full week though before I can join.

2 DS' coming on next paycheque, and MarioKart DS along with NintendoDogs.

I still cannot think of dark yet cool name for myself.

PS, there is some control the the friend code, you can shut down your own somehow I read at will from the site so nobody can find you nor add you to their list. I'm almost positive its there. Several members there on NintendoNSider forums like myself many months ago had a very good input on cautioning just local WiFi gameplay for the younger crowd - to keep them safe from those sickos!! Look me up on that site, I'm Panthro.

IIRC, you can't play with someone unless you both add each other to your respective lists. You can't see if the other person is online unless you both are on each other's lists, and you can't see who has added you, and you can't chat period, so really there is nothing a sicko can do.

I got mine earlier today, taking advantage that I'm this week in Delaware (no sales tax) + a $5 off coupon at Circuit City.

Too bad the hotel I'm staying in has Wireless connection, but its one of those connection where you first have to login on a web page before you can access anything on the net... so the MK: DS connection is not working for me :(

I'll post my Friend code here in 1 1/2 weeks, when I'm back home and (hopefully) able to connect.:D

It's good to see more players are joining! I had no friends to play against last night when I got on at 10:30. Instead, I played a couple rounds of regional games, and then played a battle mode against 7 bots on Block Fort. Holy cow. Even though the bots were easy to beat on the default difficulty setting, it was still really fun. The level was my favorite in the N64 version of MK, and it still is. The red shells behave differently, but it's still awesome. I'll have to see how the other battle mode levels measure up.

Man, I need to find some real life MK DS players to play against.

I've had bad luck finding friends online over the past 2 days, but I figure it's just because we don't have a very big group yet. However, maybe we should start organizing "weekly racing hours" or something?

My suggestions for Weekly Racing Hours:

Monday 10-11 EST.
Wednesday 10-11 EST.
Thursday 10-11 EST.
Sunday 4-6 EST.

Sound like a good idea? Anyone else have some time suggestions? I'm just suggesting some times that I will try to check if I am interested in some action with friends.

Thanks Severian, that was fun. It was also the first time I was able to connect to a friend from the list.

BTW- does anyone know whether it's possible for two friends, once connected, to be joined by any of the other friends in subsequent races? That way if only 2 friends manage to hook up, they're no obligated to play too many 2 player games. It seems to me that the only option after a series of 4 races, is to either "continue" or "quit", where doing the former simply starts a new grand prix without looking for other friends, and choosing the latter seems to just disconnect the two friends and make them each start from scratch if they want to hook up again with more people.

You don't need to register online on order to obtain a friend code and play online, but I believe registering online has some additional benefits, such as allowing you to link your DS and web accounts for the purpose of synching stats or something.

Anyway, you can add all your friends and view your own friend code before you actually connect to nintendo wifi with the DS.
Just select "Nintendo WFC" from main menu, then select "Friend Code". "Confirm Friend Code" tells you your own code and "Register Friend Code" is where you enter the friend codes and nicknames of others. Simple as that.

After you connect to Nintendo WIFI from a valid access point, you can toggle the lower parameter to "friends" and begin searching. You won't find anyone, however, until both you and the respective friend have entered each others codes. Thus for your first several online games you will most likely play strangers.

As far as I know, there is no real limit to the number of friends you can add. I say "no real" because it MIGHT in fact limit you to something like 999 or 9999 or whatever, but you can always remove friends at any time, just as easily as you added them.

As for actually getting online with the DS, it should be easy provided to have a supported router. As I mentioned elsewhere, I am able to play online with no lag or snags using just the airport extreme card in my powerbook. If you happen to own one of the airport base stations, then the process should be easier for you.

Good luck (I'm sure it won't take any) connecting.
I'm in the US, EST, so chances are we won't be playing at the same time, but in any case:

basically, I work from 6-2 or 8-4 CST in the AM so I am available anytime from 4 to roughly midnight. I've read times others are availiable and one thing i have noticed is that noone has specified whether the times are AM or PM unless I didn't look close enough. Sorry to be picky, but this IS the internet and everyone is on a different schedule and there may be a few red-eye gamers who race at 4 in the morning (and nothing wrong with that, been there) so please state whether availibility times are at night, morning, etc. please. Once again, look forward to see some of you on the track.

Also, I wrote my name in katakana so if anyone goes into Friends and gets me as an opponent , there's a good chance its me(its 4 letters when written in Japanese). Also, if anyone else wants their name in Japanese who doesn't read hiragana or katakana, let me know and I'll try to hook you up.

Also, Nerdboy's suggestion of a separate website was a good idea. I'd really like to help out with this, but currently I am swamped with other projects. Maybe I'll just have to focus my time better while I leave my DS idling online waiting for friends to appear. :)

Concering a possible website: I fully agree. It would be much more useful and easier to update than a forum thread. Not sure if you worked on it yet Nerdboy.

Seems to me that we got to settle on a name first. So unless there are objections, I'll pick my favorite from the list so far ^_^:

So should I go to the site and join? I don't have a full .Mac account (just an iChat one), but will it still work?

I haven't been able to make a site yet. I, too, have been really busy.

Think so:

FAQ - Group Member

Q: Can PC users belong to .Mac groups?

A: Yes. PC users can create a .Mac ID (and get a free trial membership) just the way Mac users can. The .Mac ID is theirs to keep and use for .Mac groups, AIM and iChat chats, the iTunes Music Store, and the Apple Store, even if they don't join .Mac when their trial memberships expire. PC users will be able to view and create group web pages, send and receive messages, and view the group calendar. Some PC users with software that has support for webcal protocol or webcal://URL can also subscribe to the group calendar.

Q: If my .Mac membership or trial account expires, can I still be a member of the groups I've joined?

A: Yes, you can continue to use your .Mac name and password to access and use group web-based activities, including reading and sending messages in the group message center. The From: address for your messages will be the group address until you choose a new email address for group membership in your profile page. To reach your group, go to www.mac.com and select Groups on the .Mac tab.

Q: Can I join a group with an expired .Mac ID?

A: Yes. Even if your .Mac account has expired, your .Mac ID remains valid for membership in .Mac groups. Once you are invited, log in with your .Mac ID and accept the invitation and proceed to the group page. To receive mail from the group, click the Edit Profile link at the bottom of the group home page to add or choose an alternate email address. Your group correspondence will be sent to that alternate email address (once you have chosen it as your address for that group).

Q: How do I join a group?

A: You must be invited by the group's owner, or referred by someone who's already a member of the group.

Looks like you can join a .mac group on "invite" only.

Feel free to PM me with you .mac email address.

Hello fellow racers.

Back from the weekend and catching up on my replies…

I've already messaged sRobert on the subject, but I'd love to sponsor you guys on my site, www.mariokartdsoutpost.com (http://www.mariokartdsoutpost.com). All admins in your league would have full rights to my board. I also have a live chat program. And can specifically set one up just for your league. Anyone may contact me on the matter at:

Looks neat. I like the emblems. One important thing (I think) for our league is to preserve the MacRumors community aspect. If it can survive among the other communities on your site (like a MRioKart forum under the League section of your board. I personnally don't see any problems moving over.

I'd like to know more about yourself and your site: How did you hear about MacRumors and is your site a "commercial" site or a "fan" site?

I encourage all members to have a look at mkdsaaren's site: www.mariokartdsoutpost.com (http://www.mariokartdsoutpost.com). What do you guys think? Could this be our league home? What do you guys think?

A warm welcome to all our new racers.

I really oughta catch up and add you all to my freind list. :o

I "unofficially" picked MRiokart Racing League (Nerdboy's suggestion) as the name of the league. How do you guys feels about it? Good enough? Better ideas? I personnally like it and I think it's witty. ^_^

About the logos. All submissions are welcomed. I really think it should looks clear and good when shrunk to a small size. Let's say 64x64 pixels.

Agreed. I simply used ichat the last time I played. People might be uncomfortable sharing/posting their chat name online though. Maybe a more anonymous solutions is needed. Something like IRC? Is it still used? Anything better out there? I think I still have Snak installed somewhere…*I find browser based chat programs clunky.

If needed we can use space and bandwidth on my server for the Mario Kart website if you don't want to use a .Mac group and get a real website going for it. I have no problem with setting aside some space and bandwidth for a second site on the server.

A real website would be nice but I wouldn't know how to build one ^_^ Worst case scenario is we end up with this thread and a IRC chat room, which is not that bad.

On another note. I've also tried my hands at making a logo:

srobert, that is an awesome logo! I was a little lukewarm toward the "MRiokart Racing League" name for a while, but it has grown on me quite nicely, especially with the advent of a logo.

Also, unfortunately, I have yet to encounter a "friends" match in the wild, even with our growing league. I'm going to try leaving my DS on, searching for friends matches while I do other things in the evening. So, hopefully I'll run into some of you online!

I have very reliable, powerful hosting. unlimited bandwidth, space etc. costs a bloody fortune. we could use that?
I could make a sort of blog/forum hybrid using Wordpress and PhpBB2. the address would be something like http://satansam.co.uk/mkds or whatever.

just throwing some ideas around :)

I'm a design student too so I'd try my damnedest to make it beautiful looking.

PS. I wanna join in a match! I've only played a friends match with my sister and an online mate so far. 1 on 1!

well from what i understand is if someone else has a friend confirmed and you don't you can still play that other person because of the mutual friend that you two share.

And bwahahha Marky that makes us 1-1 i believe

Well, the other day I was playing a game with srobert, and a friend of mine named Bugclimber joined in while we were at the Friends screen. srobert and bugclimber did not have each other on their friends lists and had never heard of each other, but since they both had me as a mutual friend, it worked.

I would say this thread is good enough, but the mods here tend to discourage threads that turn into chat between a handful of members. I've set up a bulletin board for us to use at my Podophile.com site, which I had originally intended to use as an iPod/Mac/Tech blog (and still may someday). I think we need chat, it'd be great to talk in a group before and after the games. I think that'd be a lot easier than getting on and just hoping some friends are on as well.

Could we use this forum but chat from somewhere else?

Another crazy idea - What about a league emblem or symbol we put on our emblem. Kinda like a clan, it would identify us to each other and other players. Maybe a small "mr" or something in one corner of our emblem?

hmm my thoughts are that when more and more DS WIFI games come out there will just be a MR league for all of them, and at that point i think we would need our own forum

You raise a valid point. I already ordered Animal Crossing and I'll definitly invite everybody here to my town. We can't have 3+ different threads like this one about DS games being bumped to the top of the MacRumors Games' forum all the time.

My guess is that we need another board for all our Mac/DS Wifi community needs, with a forum on the board for each WiFi enabled game.

Chat is definitly very useful. Until we find something better, let's say we use IRC, IRC.net profile, #MRKarts chatroom. It can't be that bad since MacRumors are using it ^_^. I know Eva01 had trouble with IRC but let's give it a try. I'm open to suggestions for better options. Voice your opinion. We can find a bunch of free IRC clients over here: Click! (http://www.versiontracker.com/php/search.php?str=irc+chat&plt%5B%5D=macosx&tfBasis=&afterYear=&afterMonth=&afterDay=&beforeYear=&beforeMonth=&beforeDay=&rtfBasis=&rAfterYear=&rAfterMonth=&rAfterDay=&rBeforeYear=&rBeforeMonth=&rBeforeDay=&ptfBasis=&pAfterYear=&pAfterMonth=&pAfterDay=&pBeforeYear=&pBeforeMonth=&pBeforeDay=&action=search&srchGuid=412796cbd290367e%3A93d548%3A107b949cf2a%3A-800093d548%3A107e0d14f3e%3A-1446&by=licenseType&dir=descending&pg=1&perPage=20).

TEG, good games last night! I enjoyed them. :) It seems we're pretty closely matched, going with one set to each of us! It's too bad we weren't able to pick up that third friend who was searching for games while we were in the middle of racing (I saw the friend icon blinking in the middle of our match). Maybe next time. :)

European NWC Sites Go Live
Credits: Written by Dennis - ds-x2.com

Nintendo of Europe has launched their own version of the WiFi Connection community page. As the European version looks equal to the US version, one difference has been found: Europe does not allow to link your game or friendcode to your Nintendo ID. Also, the Forum-link is redirecting to Nintendo of America's own forums, who do not legally allow people from outside Canada or the U.S. to join.

Whether NoE is planning to enhance the website in the (near) future, remains unknown.

Welcome aboard guys.

All mine all mine!

Just picked up the Mario Kart today. I couldnt resist until Xmas .. and my wife is seriously pissed ... because I let the kids know :p . She see's this as a $240=2 gifts under the Tree gone to waist. I see it as cheaper games to purchase next week.

I think she knew it was coming, because I told her last night I saw this dude playing the Red MarioKart pkg going full out with intensity in his face, his hands the tension in his shoulders; If he wasnt wearing his winter jacket & if I was so inclined I'd swear I'd see the hairs on his neck stand! This just after 2 mins of turning on this game. After yesterdays ride home on the subway I knew what I'd spend my first $52 of my paycheck on!

PS If I win the 6/49 24 million I swear I'm donating 100 Nintendo DS Mario Kart systems to underpriviledged kids in womens shelters, just to make their Xmas a little warmer; that and a full course meal at few of those shelters in Toronto. Damn I wish I could do that without winning the lottery.

Hello. Can you confirm you gave your correct Friend Code? The first 6 digits are exactly the same as the previous poster. Not impossible, but very unlikely.

Welcome aboard to the wave of new pilots!

You guys should pay us a visit at http://satansam.co.uk/ds/. It's a place where we gather to plan races or other online DS games. (You have to be loged in to see the friend codes lists.) This way we don't flood MacRumors with our game planning sessions. See you there.

Once somebody on your list adds you to their list and goes online, the lock will be activated the next time you go online yourself.

Could you please edit my friends code – I had to take back my ds for a new one (split hinge  ), and it has resulted in changing my friends code!

Done.

By the way, I also had the split hinge problem. Left hinge, right? It seems pretty widespread (http://www.maxconsole.net/a?mode=news&newsid=8474). Fortunatly, it doesn't look like it will get worst.

Yes! It was the left hinge –*the plastic was split and there was a 2mm gap between the pieces.

Thanks for the link –*I was actually reading about the problem, which made me look at mine, couldn't beleive I hadn't noticed.

I took it back as nintendo has a 1 year gurantee and the shop let me exchange for a new one. Got a black one to replace the white, but don't like it as much... Still lovely though!

Ouch. Sound like yours had a real defect. Glad you could exchange it. On mine it looks more like a hairline fracture. Must be a weakness is all DS Lite. It fractured in the exact same place as the pic in the link above and in the exact same angle.

Mine too, but actually seperated aswell... I'm very relieved I could take it back, thanks!

Hopefully it was just a batch of them that have the problem
