Twelve South (http://www.twelvesouth.com) today unveiled a new adjustable pedestal stand designed to work with both Apple's iPhone 5 and the iPad mini. Made from brushed metal to match other Apple/Mac accessories, the HiRise (http://www.twelvesouth.com/products/hirise_iphone/) is designed to work with a Lightning cable and nearly any iPhone or iPad mini case.

http://images.macrumors.com/article-new/2013/08/hirise.jpgPlace HiRise in your workspace to charge while your hands are free during calls and FaceTime chats.

Unlike most other docks, HiRise doesn't block your speakers, mic or headphone ports. This vertical pedestal is small and beautiful enough to use anywhere in your home or office. It's the ultimate perch for keeping your iPhone 5 or iPad mini fully charged and ready to go.According to Twelve South, the stand works with a wide variety of popular cases, from Otterbox to Speck to the company's own BookBook (http://www.macrumors.com/2012/11/15/twelve-souths-bookbook-for-iphone-5-ships-monday/). The rear support on the HiRise can slide back and forth and multiple height clips for the Lightning cable allow it to accommodate the majority of cases. With standard docks and stands, device cases often have to be removed.

The HiRise stand can be purchased (http://www.twelvesouth.com/products/hirise_iphone/) from the Twelve South website for $34.99.

35 for the stand + 19 for another cable because your not going to want to disassemble it everytime you need to go somewhere = 55 plus tax.

screw that. I got a better solution.

Exactly because with Apple's iphone docks you had to assemble them for half an hour and have special screw drivers at hand. Oh boy, what a great product that is! So Apple like.

You make a good point that having to supply your own lightning cable does jack up the overall price. However the dock you linked screams cheap all over it. Sorry, I wouldn't pay $5 for that.

I agree. It looked nice until I saw the video. The assembly part with screws is a buzz kill. I think I'll stick with my pre-order of Belkin's MIXIT ChargeSync dock in green color which requires no assembly, includes a built in lightning cable, and has a great minimalist looking design in my opinion.

I would get one of these things, they look awesome, but this is at a ridiculous price IMO.
You have to assemble it yourself, you need to get a Lightning cable at hand, it doesn't have any technology whatsoever.

I'd buy it for $20 because of the looks. But it doesn't deserve the staggering $35 price tag.

Quite recently, (as a result of my attention having been drawn to this company's products on this very forum), I bought some of the Twelve South BookBook cases for my MBA and my iPad mini; I must say that they look gorgeous, are solidly constructed, and yes, are also portable.

Irrespective of price, I'm a big fan of good design, elegance, use of high quality materials, and the idea that form and function can combine in one elegant product. Twelve South manages that; this looks lovely, I must say.

Would you make one of these for $20? If so, I may have a job for you. ...because if I went downstairs to our machine shop and told them to make me 1000 of these, they'd cost over $100 a piece just to produce, and that's before marketing & advertising costs.

If $35 is exorbitant, but $20 is acceptable, you're arguing over $15. You blow more than that rounding off lunch tips in a week. Suck it up.

...If they set msrp at $20 you'd just complain it should have been $10. But it's understandable. To people who don't value craftsmanship & manufacturing, and have been told for a couple generations that such work is beneath them, nothing is worth anything, and few have any idea what it actually takes to build a product and bring it to market anymore. Everything should just be free.

So true. So many people fail to realize the company making them has to make a profit or it's not worth their time. So easy to look at the item and judge it based solely on the size, amount of pieces and material and just say "what, 35 for couple pieces of metal!? Crazy!" But then you take a real-world look at it and realize shipping, manufacturing, advertising, returns, marketing, production... it's overwhelming... for couple pieces of metal.

I really don't get the elitism of some people here, what may be a value for you is cost prohibitive for someone else. There really isn't any need for go be critical of people who feel its too much for what it offers by saying its "not much money".

Anyways, if this can fit a life proof case I'm sold, I'd just use it for work where I already have a lighting cable connected to my computer 24/7 to charge my phone so the lack of a built in cable doesn't impact my decision.

It's insane that Apple doesn't make something like that, a dock that is actually high quality and works. They really dropped the ball by not having this and leaving it in fumbling hands of 3rd party developers.

I want a dock at least as elegant/small and capable/fully featured as the iphone 4/4S dock that I use nightly. That could have been done easily in my opinion. They could improve it even, by just routing the speaker sound passively through the dock, and allowing the headphone jack to include mic input (which is not a feature of the 4/4S dock, but should be -- it works great next to a stereo but not with a headset or retro style phone accessory (http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=23905714b&color=100&cm_mmc=SEM-_-Google-_-PLA-_-55041990424adwords_labelsAPARTMENT_MUSIC&device=c&network=g&matchtype=)).

1) They are 3 pieces of square metal and 3 pieces of plastic. Their shape is not unusual.
2) They are made in CHINA which makes cost REALLY go down.
3) To make them it probably costs them ~$6 including packaging.
4) 35-20=15. Which you say it's not a lot, but in actuality is 42% less which is A LOT.
5) Impossible your machinists will charge at cost $100 for these small metal parts.
5a) They are not making 1,000 but probably 250,000 of them at least. See how price and production cost can come down ;)

God I miss those CCFL LCD's.

What weather app is that on the iPhone? Yahoo?

The dock is a nice design, but I've seen (and use) better quality [pre-assembled] aluminum docks made to fit right on an iMac or LED display (http://www.bitemyapple.co/collections/all/products/ocdock). I like the docks from "bitemyapple (http://www.bitemyapple.co/collections/all)". While much more expensive, they can be modded easily for differing cables and non-Apple devices. This one is pretty different:

I don't think the price is out of line with what most quality accessories cost.

That is the biggest drawback in my opinion too, cause you're certainly not going to disassemble it every time you leave, just so you can take the cable with you. And if I was going to nit-pick, I would add, that the support pillar behind your iDevice should be easily adjustable for stand-off distance (via click-stops perhaps), to allow for different device thicknesses, or different cases, rather than having to disassemble the bottom and having to find that special tool, that you forgot to tuck back in the base, and that's sure to somehow have developed legs or wings.

As for the good, it's another one of Twelve South's well thought-out/designed, and beautifully executed products, that puts some of those other cheap knock-off accessories to shame. I don't think I would use it for a Mini. But for an iPhone, after investing in the extra lightning cable, it would be a real nice addition to the desktop, imho.

3) To make them it probably costs them ~$6 including packaging.

Then you could put your money where you mouth is and order a pile from China and profit by selling them for $7 to $20. Not worth the risk, or not worth your time to do it for that little income? Then neither is it for some company.

I don't know why that number surprises you, if you know people that make products you will realize the real cost of making things versus what you want to charge. If this product w. the same quality was made for android exclusively for example then you can bet the price point would be $15; just because it's made for :apple: companies charge more. Actually if I really cared for the product I would and just charge the $19.99 and sell it at big box stores AND I would add a microusb and an old apple connector plastic piece adapter for all the android and older iPhone users so the thing becomes an universal item that can easily reach more people.
Also, a profit of $1 per product is not business, haaa you thought you could belittle my comment w/ that tizzy reply, but I'm going to tell you this: "a fool and his money are soon..." I will let you use google to find out the missing word.

Looks nice. But for the price it should've come with Lightning cable in the package. Or make it $49.99 and add a IR receiver on the stand to make it a charge station and portable jukebox for iPod/iPhone/iPad with an AppleTV remote, connected to speaker via line out, or the Lightning USB cable.

I like it. Will try and order one in the next few weeks, don't have money to spare since college is starting soon. But I'll save up.

You get what you pay for. And honestly, it's no better time to point this out than right now. People's phones are exploding due to batteries that are NOT tested properly, apparently someone's house caught fire because of one too. And now power adapters are suffering the same faults, and someone died because of it.

Some of you guys are so selfish. You live in a country that forces every manufacture in this country to have everything they sell in stores follow strict rules in order to protect consumers. They all come with at least 1-year warranties, and if there is a recall, your replacement is FREE, and that's even if it is 10 years later. Get over yourselves.

I get that most of you people can't afford all the nice things, but just understand this... My parents taught me that it's always good to spend money on something that is really worth it. And that is why we have a kitchen table and a set of pots and pans that are way over 20 years old. And heck, we have boxes of Crayola crayons, markers, and colored pencils that are that old and we still use them.

You cannot afford to keep investing into cheap stuff. It's like renting a house - You're throwing money away. That $5 will end up being $100 out-of-pocket sooner or later.

This stand is future proof. If you're smart enough, you'll figure out ways to make it work with other cables.

I really would have gotten 2 or 3 of these but I can't justify spending more than 100.00 on docks. Maybe I'll pick some more up later on. It's perfect for next to the bed in the kitchen or anywhere. I hope when the iPad 5 comes out it works with that! That'd be awesome.

And it's set up! I really like it, though it was actually trickier than I thought it would be to get those screws in. Also, the rubber mat on the underside isn't completely stuck down on mine. Quality control, Twelve South!

Overall, though, it's a winner. Has a really great weight to it. Works perfectly with the middle-clip with my Speck PixelSkin HD case + iPhone 5. :)

Also, with all the adjustments you can make, I'm pretty confident this will work with the next iPhone, iPad mini etc.

Very true but if have a case on the iPhone it won't charge, the Twelve South HiRise for iPhone is adjustable in connector height so it works with case when docked. But I bought a cheap one from ebay looks just like yours and was able to take it apart and shave of some plastic so the connectors stands higher. Its worth a try for a few pounds

What does make me sick is Hi rise $35 (21) in USA yet $ becomes over here.
