iPad/iPhone App -> Airplay to ATV (mkv,avi etc)

I just tested. The vlc app airplays ( ONLY the sound from avi/mkv's. No image....it has to be mp4/mov/m4v!
ps- you can airplay (with mirror on) but the quality is low compared to native airplay.

Native airplay?... even on mkv/avi's?... or you mean airplay with mirror option on?
Ok check if your mirror option is on.... turn it of and see if it continues airplaying mkv/avi etc files. Just airplay it to ATv with mirror off!
It is my understanding that airvideo (as i think it is called) requires hardware decoding and hardware decoding only works with iOS native video codecs. All other video codecs must be software decoded an hence must be used with air mirroring instead. It is possible that container formats such as MKV can be played with airvideo if they contain H.264 encoded material.
