Apple is again planning (http://www.apple.com/retail/) on an after Thanksgiving (Black Friday) sale at its retail stores.
http://www.macrumors.com/images/articles/blackfriday2005.png
Apple has offered special discounts for the past several years (2002 (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2002/11/20021118101949.shtml), 2003 (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2003/11/20031126103001.shtml), 2004 (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2004/11/20041126110447.shtml)).
Last year's event saw variable discounts on many items in the Apple Store. (a list from 2004 (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=1143844&postcount=6))

Mm... Black Friday... love. :D My family used to be outta the house before 6AM, but we haven't the last 2 years.

Thanksgiving is Thursday right?
I wish we had Apple sales over here, proper ones, not the pissweak "cheap pink 1G iPod mini Valentines Day Sale" they had over here in department stores. I don't think the AppleCentres even had that one.
They could have one after the Australia Day long weekend but they may have to hold it off for a while cause most of us would much rather spend the day after the long weekend in bed with a blindfold on and earplugs in being fed fluids through a drip. After we recover from the hangover we'll think about discounted Apple products.

Thanksgiving sales are LAME. Last year we priced things we wanted then on the sale they were the same price but now on sale. Marked up? You bet. Besides you can save over 25% on anything in the world simply from buying online or ebay and you save on gas and hassle.

i personally like shopping with tons of people in the stores at the same time. if i go to a store and its super empty, it kinda feels boring and i dont go shopping often so i like it to be kind of a fun experience at the same time. my day after thanksgiving will be a day full of hangovers and a lot of XBOX 360 usage!

I'm guessing he's the negative. I still don't see how you could rate this negative (Apple's sales are different - you actually save money off regular prices, not some scam like you describe. Please use relevant associations for comparisons to prevent yourself from embarrassment.)

Ill be stopping buy there on Black Friday. It really is a fun day if you enjoy shopping. Good to see some Apple has some sales, although if its like last year, 5-7% off isnt that big of a deal.

Actually, Thanksgiving is always on the 4th Thurdsay--which sometimes is second-to-the-last.
Now, Canadian Thanksgiving is the 2nd Monday in October, I think. (And apparently Thanksgiving was celebrated first in Newfoundland--decades before the pilgrims landed at Plymouth.)
I will do no shopping on Black Friday. You couldn't pay me enough.

That's nice to hear...does anyone know if the discounts at the online store will exactly mirror what is offered at the retail stores? That'd be nice if it did...although I wouldn't mind venturing out to the actual store if there are nicer deals/offers/freebies/stocking stuffers there :)
Oh...and does anybody know if the discounts usually for stock configs only...or does BTO get some sort of discount too?

I love Black Friday. I'm looking forward to the huge crowds of rushing people. That kind of stuff excites me. I won't be going to an Apple store that day, though. I'll be shopping in my local mall area rather than in Delaware (I don't like crossing the bridge... especially on a day like this!). I hope to get some good deals at Best Buy. :)
Anyone who does go to an Apple store this Friday, please post impressions. Pics would be nice! :D Thanks.

Their "sale" simply eliminates on a few piddly items the tax you'd pay on it over simply buying it at another online Apple reseller where you're not slammed with hundreds of dollars in taxes.
As for the poster who asked about doubling down on the sale price AND the edu discount, if the post three years are any indication, no. Someone accurately pointed out that Apple rarely (read: Never) combines offers. There were some things I contemplated getting with my edu discount plus the xmas sale price, however they never would combine them. Last year I bought two Airport Express at the $99 sale price and specifically asked even the manager re: edu pricing and he said "Apple never discounts and item twice." Sooo with that, fat chance. Sorry.

Why couldn't Apple have an on-line sale that encompassed all their on-line stores just once in a while?
There's no Apple Store in Ireland and all we get on-line are a few promotions. No Refurb store and even though there's a limited refurb store on-line at their UK site it can't be used without having a UK address and a UK based credit card.

Can we assume this sale will be online?
Anyways, let's break down the graphics again: iPod Nano, iMac, Apple Universal Remote, iMac again, digital camera, iPod, headphones, iPod Shuffle, Mighty Mouse, G5, iSight, AirPort Express, G5 again?, MIDI keyboard, digital camcorder, Apple Keyboard, CD/Software/Media, another mouse...
How about sales all across the board? :D I could use a Mac Mini or iBook (or maybe even the low-end G5) and maybe a iPod Nano or AirPort Express. Ahhh... decisions, decisions...
EDIT: So, how about a LOT LESS politics and more Apple rumors, mmmkay?

I ordered my iMac last year on the online Apple Store and got a discount with the Black Friday sale. It was about the equivalant of the educational discount, so it was as if Apple opened it up for everyone - not that they keep you from using the discount at the online store anyway.
BTW, BF is the absolute worst example of American consumerism anywhere. There is nothing Christmas-like about rushing into a Wal-Mart for $29 DVD players and getting trampled to death. If you are shopping that day and think that you are viewed as anything other than cattle with a wallet, you are sadly mistaken.
I work in retail and dread that holiday rush.

Q...when apple change there architecture next year to the microsoft maninfacture, is that going effect games and applications that we can read?

Not slightly; I still believe that Apple's sales are much more genuine than other sales. You used an example where your company RAISED prices, THEN DISCOUNTED THEM to say they were on sale. Apple does not RAISE prices, then DISCOUNT them to say they are on sale. Bad comparison.
But I don't really care - I don't want to pursue this any further, if thats ok, so don't bother replying...:)

Why would anyone EVER buy anything in a retail store? My office is two blocks from Apple's Soho NY Flagship store, great for playing with the new toys they make - but why pay full retail price plus tax? Amazon usually has a rebate on Macs ($125.00 on iMacs right now) with no tax and free shipping - I'll eat some extra turkey and sleep in.

Couple of odd things about this sale:
1) I view this email in Safari (via Gmail) and the links on the image don't work, yet when I view the same email via Firefox the links work?
2) I live in Canada, registered with Apple using a Canadian address - yet I get an US Apple store advert, which I can't use, since the US Apple Online shop doesn't accept non-US credit cards or Canadian delivery addresses.

I think we would have heard something by now. Stores that have "give-aways" will advertise them weeks before, so they can get as many people to come as possible. If you don't tell anyone, then no one will come (that wouldn't have anyways) and everything you gave away would have been a waste.
But you should have come to the grand opening of the $.99 store in my area. The first 9 people in the store could buy an iPod Nano for $.99
The first person got in line at 8pm the night before.

Thanks for the laugh. I myself refuse to shop on the day after Thanksgiving after one experience where my wife got trampled trying to get cheap blankets at Meijer's. By the time the herd made it over to the sale blankets, they were out. Imagine that!
I may pick up a nano online, though if the sale extends to the on-line store.

I myself refuse to shop on the day after Thanksgiving after one experience where my wife got trampled trying to get cheap blankets at Meijer's
That's terrible...next time bring the riot gear and batons eh? :D

They may not necessarily raise them, but you do have to admit that the initial price points on some of them are (cough) "elevated" a tad.
For exmple, the Apple 20" LCD Widescreen lists for $800 - - it will take a pretty hefty discount to get it close to the before-discounted prices for the Dell 2005FPW. An interesting comparison, considering that they both happen to reportedly use the same LG.Phillips LCD component...

I wouldn't think so, as I wasn't allowed to use my gift card from my parents online. And my school didn't give me a student ID because the satellite campus didn't use them, so I had no proof for the store to get my edu discount, there. :(
Apple just now started accepting Gift Cards online. They even sell them now at the online store.

So, the Apple Store still has normal hours then? Ours opens up at 10 AM. It seems odd to go to an after Thanksgiving Sale at 10 AM. <.<
I think the online store might roll over to the sale at 12 AM.

Wow, you were really watching the clock, weren't you? ;)
How does this work, is Apple just going to discount several things, or is it going to be a mad rush because only the first 1000 people get the discount? Could they do something like that online?

I'm waking up at 5 AM for shopping tomorrow, so I'll be sure to check the Apple online store before heading out the door. Do you think the sale is only good for a few hours or could it be the whole day? I hope it's the entire day since I won't be back home until the early afternoon.

Last year it was, and rumors this year say it will be again. So, yes. But there is no way to know if the savings will be the same in-store compared to online.

Last year it was all Day - I think. I know it was more than a couple of hours though.

Just visited the online store -- what a pathetic sale. I was expecting something useful like 10% off on everything or something along those lines. I may have bought a nano.

I just checked the refurbs and sale items.
Looks like they have some more 1.33 GHz 12" iBooks available again for $799.
They also list a 1.5 GHz Superdrive, Scrolling trackpad model 12" PowerBook
for $1299.

I was going to purchase something from Apple before Christmas, so a 5$ discount online was worth it to me. I will get an engraved (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=162967) iPod Nano for Christmas. Oddly, despite being an 'Early Adopter,' I have never owned an iPod with a screen. I listen to a lot of recorded material- both at work and while at home. My father purchased all of our early Apple computers, and the first external hard drive for our //gs (a 40mB LaserSpool!). When he saw that I could carry 4GB in my pocket, he thought that he and my mother would contribute towards my "first" real iPod purchase. He is still amazed that a CD can hold nearly 20 times what our first external HD could.
Dam it- I usually don't shop on black Friday- at least I wasn't at the mall.
