I'll probably check out the Apple Store's offerings...unfortunately, it's located in the state's largest mall, which seems to cater to more tourists than to locals, so the crowds (which are always bad anyway) might be horrendous. That and the fact that it's the only Apple Store in the state.

Heck yea!
I'm gonna go to the Apple store.. and do all my shopping in one day! :D
(maybe do a little for myself, too! :D)
Gonna be at the galleria around 7, at the apple store 7:45 and pretend it's a grand opening.
Yeah, I'm a dumb nerdlinger.
but it'll be fun.
:D
anyone care to join me at the Houston Galleria Apple store? PM me. I may go back later in the day if no one is up for 8 AM apple fun. :)

If the traffic/crowds didn't scare me and there was no work, I'd consider it. Haven't gone to Galleria store in a while. Oh well, it's about an hour drive anyways. I'm on southside and Woodlands is easier to get to (nicer store too)

of the Republic, "That depends on what your definition of 'shopping' is."
Going to the Apple Store? Hell, yeah. Spending money? Probably not*.
Last Saturday, I went there and discovered a great shill activity. My daughter and I started playing around with Photo Booth on the new iMacs, and then we walked away while we left the app open. People practically started waiting in line to try it out. (Try the "Dent" effect on Effects page 2, if you stand just right, you can make your face tiny and your head huge. Hilarious!) I'm not saying that Photo Booth is the best reason to be an iMac G5, but it might just push some fence-sitter over the edge.

What is Black Friday? Should I repair permissions in preparation?Hee. Just in case you really don't know (since you're 'down under')...
Black Friday (someone will surely correct me if I'm wrong) is the Friday after the Thanksgiving holiday (observed in the US as the fourth Thursday of November). It has become customary of stores to host wide-ranging sales starting from as early as midnight the night before/6AM/7AM and going until as late as midnight Friday night. :p
Why call it 'black?' When a store/company is in the negative, the numbers/text are posted in angry red font/lettering-- but when the company's profits/numbers are in the positive, they are displayed in black. Due to the overwhelming success of sales generated on this lovely Friday-after-Thanksgiving, it has since become known as Black Friday.

I went shopping on black Friday last year (or was it the year before?) -- it wasn't as bad as I had imagined, because the stores are all ready for it -- tons of staff, all excited about the christmas season. Plus, everyone expects the crowds, so everyone's in a good mood. Really it's not a bad day to go shopping. However, we have houseguests that weekend, so we won't go shopping unless they want to.

One last thing to add to that explaination: Many retail stores operate in the red for the year until black friday. It's not just that they are in the black for the day, after that point in the year they are (hopefully) making money overall. (Any retail store that isn't in the black after this week in the US is probably going to close.)

7 or 8 years ago, when I still worked for Best Buy, our lines were so bad that a guy carved "I've sat here for an hour" in the tile floor. It was one of the old small Best Buys, so we only had four checkouts. The lines stretched back through both sides of the store, plus a couple down the CD aisles.
Funny to think these people were all up early and waiting in lines for $99 VCRs. I think we also had a bargain CTX PC for $999.

It can also be called "black Friday" due to the fact going to a maul (a "mall" will feel like a "maul" that is) is the equivalent of death. It's for those who enjoy abuse, insanity, claustrophic situations, getting a cold AND a flu from flocks and flocks of the miscreants so gullible and stupid to force themselves into a sheep-like, status to think that this must be the day to go shopping. "Black" as in death, it's like dying a death and it's the reason more people would rather NOT go shopping that day than be the suckers that would. It makes the Run with the Bulls seem like a walk in the park on a quiet, beautiful, warm late spring day. It is HELL!!!
I would rather have a root canal!
I love hearing this statement from people who clearly have never had a root canal. Back in the day, by which I mean 30 years ago (in other words how out-of-date and dumb this saying is) dentists would do a root canal the minute it was diagnosed and in some cases the tooth was still alive, the procedure then was done on a live tooth and therefore could cause intense pain HOWEVER usually in dumb, jock, too-cool-for-Novocain morons who thought painkillers were for kids. Repeat... 30 years ago. Nowadays dentists won't perform a root canal if the tooth is alive and, in an extreme situation if they even had to they're going to get Novocain, there's no way a dentist wants a squirming patient. Considering the tooth is dead in the majority of root canals, hence the nerve is dead to the tooth you could drill right through one without any pain killers, there's nothing there to feel. Thought I'd set the record straight on a very annoying saying that would be like "I'd rather 23 skidoo!" It doesn't make any sense in this modern age.
Signed,
Two completely painless root canal guy and a dentist uncle who's never once had a patient even squirm* during 20 years of root canals
*until they got the bill of course

Just curious... those of you complaining about crowds-- what time are you in the stores? What types of stores are you going to? Not to mention, the last few years have fizzled out a bit on the retail front because a lot of shoppers are doing their Black Friday shopping online.
That all impacts how many people you'll run into... At 6AM-7AM the only stores I've seen crowded are ones w/ tech nerds :p lined up; ie. Best Buy, WalMart (supposedly have good deals on tvs and whatnot), Circuit City, etc.
Otherwise, not that many people are at the mall at that time-- the crowd really picks up around 8-9AM and yes, I speak from experience. :D BTW, I actually hate crowds and I still love to venture forth on Black Friday! Katie, I think you need to go to a 'lively' concert. People straight up and grin at you if you elbow them and shove them to the ground (as long as you're still in/by the mosh pit).

Just curious... those of you complaining about crowds-- what time are you in the stores? It's not so much the crowds that drive me away - it's just the shopping in general. I am not typically a "browser" - I know what I want and I go buy it. Many times I can get a good deal online and avoid having to hit the stores in the first place.
We are looking for a low to mid-range LCD TV for our bedroom (we don't watch much in there, but occasionally it's nice to have while getting ready in the mornings and such). If I knew Best Buy or Circuit City was running a deal on the Toshiba LCD TVs with DVD, I'd make an exception to my rule.
I'll even avoid (*gasp*) the Apple Store. Mainly because I don't need anything, so I don't want to fight mall crowds just to wander around. Maybe if I could do it without towing two young kids around. Of course, every time we go to the mall, my daughter (who is almost 5) always begs to go to the Apple Store :D.

Many times I can get a good deal online and avoid having to hit the stores in the first place. This is exactly what BF has become for thousands of people... BF adverts are leaked by employees/relatives/etc. and posted online in numerous BF forums. Those ads will show specific models of TVs and LCD monitors, even DVD titles and their respective prices. So people in turn, go to a store to pick up very specific sale items before rushing to the next store on their lists.
That's why I mentioned those 'techy' stores always have lines-- people waiting to get $350 laptops or plasma/HDTVs at 'awesome' prices.

go to the mall to shop and buy stuff? no
go to the mall just to watch people? now, that sounds like fun because in our small community, nothing brings everybody out at one time, but they will be at one of two malls in the area that day and i might meet people i haven't seen for years
it's a big social thing since monterey has only 29,000 people, one sports center, one library, one softball field, one high school of less than 2000 students, and a junior college of 8000 students

Funny, I was going to to mention the same thing. And posted by another Canadian, interesting.
From the site:
For 24 hours, millions of people around the world do not participate -- in the doomsday economy, the marketing mind-games, and the frantic consumer-binge that's become our culture. We pause. We make a small choice not to shop. We shrink our footprint and gain some calm. Together we say: enough is enough. And we help build this movement to rethink our unsustainable course.
Sounds like a better idea to me.

I live in the UK and thus don't celebrate Thanksgiving. However, with most UK retailers operating in the red up to the Christmas period, it sounds like they could do with something like this to up their sales.
That said, I would stay clear of the shops that day if I lived in the US: total chaos I would imagine.

Is that from Reverend Billy's Church of Stop Shopping?
Normally, I am with the anti-consumerism idea. I wear clothes and shoes until they absolutely fall apart and I drive cars until repair bills cost more than car payments, but when it comes to Apple stuff, I have to admit that I am a typical materialistic piggie.

I voted yes but I won't be camping out by any means. There are some decent sales at a clothing store I like in the mall, and Apple sent me an email that was deliciously vague so I may check them out as well.
I usually find that if I leave my house around 2PM that a lot of the hellions are tuckered out and retired, and all of the 'left over' stuff is just fine for my needs. All I usually pick up after Thanksgiving is blank media because it usually turns up for free :)

This reminds me of Hallmark the day after Christmas. All of their "collectible" ornaments go on sale (I think 50% off). People wait at the gate for hours, and naturally the Hallmark opens an hour after they say they will, just to build up a crowd. The second those gates start to go up people are crawling under it, and if you get in the way, WATCH OUT, you could be killed.

But, you see, when we go out shopping for Christmas, we are just reaffirming our commitment to the Christmas motto: Peace on Earth and Good Will toward Men.
Right?
I've actually heard that the Black Friday thing was really a lie anyways. People now wait until the last minute to shop -- either because of procrastination or anticipation of even deeper discounts -- making the day or two before Christmas the biggest shopping days.

There are two stats floating around, "busiest" day and "biggest sales." Black Friday gets the most people through the doors, the last few days of the season see the most money spent.

I'll go out to a few stores mid morning and hope that the people who went crazy and hit all of the 6AM store openings will have exhausted themselves by then.
There are usually a few really good deals to be found on Friday. 3 or 4 years ago I found a killer deal on a 19" CRT that I still use almost every day.

I take it this is a one-day-only sale then, not the first day of a sale period (?)
In most cases that is correct. Sometimes stores will use Black Friday as a launch for a sale week, but more commonly it is only the one day. Many stores have extended hours as well, maximizing their sale time....it's basically spitting into the wind though, you can only get the 'good stuff' at one store, the one you camp at. Anything after that has already been picked through so unless you want something off the status-quo, you have to choose wisely.
jefhatfield
Nov 23, 2005, 10:54 AM
I take it this is a one-day-only sale then, not the first day of a sale period (?)
where i live is both small and very economically depressed so what i have seen in recent years is that it's the beginning of a sales period...which typically starts sometime this week with many stores starting several days before thanksgiving to get the jump on the competition
many non retail/non restaurant people have friday off so it's obviously the biggest shopping day...i was at ross, a major department store, late last night and all the stuff was already out and there were tons of shoppers there...same with target stores
we mistakenly thought we could avoid the rush, the mess, and the crowds but noooo, he he, but we didn't mind the really good prices on a lot of stuff
and what doesn't get sold off before christmas gets sold in the big january sale and that also brings massive crowds since some items are marked down even further
by february, things get completely back to normal and prices go back to their usual level and the stores look clean again

Don't get me wrong I like shopping I can do it for days as long as it's at my own pace. But on these crazy shopping days every store is just packed and you don't have time to look at the stuff you are really interested in.

So many computers on Sale!!! Even a 12" iBook for $749, BUT all computers on sale at CompUSA require a 1 year AOL contract!
That leaves me out. I almost considered buying a Toshiba laptop at CircuitCity for $199, but that's before I saw the AOL catch (yes, circuitcity too).
Not going to buy anything - not good enough deals.
Anybody know what the Apple deals are?

Yes, I will be going out with year. It's my first time going out early in the morning too. I plan on leaving by 6 AM. Our first hit will be Best Buy. I'm hoping to snag the Western Digital 80 GB external drive they have for sale for 80 bucks!!! They also have a Seagate 120 GB internal drive for $30. Good deals to be had! I just hope I can snag some...
Sorry, but that's funny. The smart money says take the $30 120GB drive and buy a $20-$30 enclosure save $20-$30 and get 40GB more space.

The only shopping I will be doing untill the holidays are over is Grocery and maybe some blank media.
I worked retail for 20 years, I can't take the crowd mentality in the stores.

Alright, I lied. I got up at 4:40 this morning, went to Kohl's to pick up what, after a discount and rebate, was a $70 portable DVD player, and came back home. Total time from waking up to being back in bed - 45 minutes. Now I'm done. Except maybe for some Apple Store stuff!

...into what i thought would be mad crowds and traffic because i forgot a prescription so i had to end up going to the big mall in the area and the biggest store there...costco...and it was not even close to being crowded! i knew things have been going bad for our state (arnold unable to turn things around and then getting killed on all his propositions in the special election recently) and it's even more slow in our county than the state, but i expected somewhat of a crowd, even if for just window shopping and hanging out
i also drove past home depot...the largest store in the county...and the parking lot had a lot of open spaces in it...and it shares the mall with mcdonald's, smart and final, and staples so business was soft there also
the smallest mall of the three in our area seemed packed but there are no megastores there besides a medium sized macy's and mervyn's
i guess i could still catch the flu or a cold because contact with just one person is all it takes this month with the cold weather and people crowding into stores and not playing out baywatch on our usually warm beaches

Yeah I went out, had a blast too except in Wal-Mart, where I was about ready to ram somebody with my shopping cart... .

I would, but I can't because I'm in Vermont at the moment, away from home. If I wasn't traveling here I would have bought the iMac G5 I now have on Black Friday...sigh.

for 68 bucks at the Apple Store. Saved $32! Woo-hoo!
I like .mac and it has been worth the $100/year for me. I use the Bookmarks every day and I use Home Page and iDisk quite often. Getting it cheaper is just gravy (which I didn't get with my turkey yesterday.)

My wife was at Staples picking up some good deals there this morning, one of which was a 512MB CF card for $15. Someone actually took stuff out of her cart while she wasn't looking. WTF is that? It amazes me what people will do. :(

Didn't go out this year. Last year, we ventured out late, maybe 5.00p. Got to the mall right after the hardcore folks had either passed out or headed for dinner, so it was remarkably empty. Missed all those cheap advertised teaser specials, but we did a fair amount of Xmas shopping in a short span with little fuss. I was surprised.

I went out, and it was a madhouse. Got to compusa at 1:30am and there were lines from the cash registers all the way to the back of the store. After leaving (without buying anything) I drove past best buy and people were sitting in lines at 2:30am waiting for it to open.
Craziness.

My wife went shopping without me and I went shopping with my neice. The crowds were not that bad where we went. I got my wife a few things (a few goodies for her iPod.) and picked up 100 DVD-R's for like 5 bucks (after rebates that is). We are pretty much done shopping for the kids now. Of course it goes by fast after you limit the number of presents and the amount you spend on them!
Now...to get that tree up.

I'd rather miss out on something and gladly will forego a decent sale just to avoid that kind of frenzy. There was recent footage on the local news stations here showing people fighting in the stores. Now that is quite pathetic.

Just 1 thing, canada store had the sale to not just the USA. So the poll options are incorrect. I live in Canada and i bought things on sale from the Canada store.:D
Maybe their is no sale in other places?
