Discovery would be cool, and I could actually see a deal being made.
NFL I think will happen sooner or later (my guess is on sooner).

Definitely better channel management, though. At least folders like on iOS.

I would like Sunday Ticket even though some of the games it won't let you watch.

Wish DirecTV was listed as a provider for ESPN on aTV.

Last isn't a channel but more so a feature, that the aTV could control my satellite box and I could use an Apple interface; something similar to GoogleTV where I didn't have to switch inputs to watch AppleTV content.

My wife and I watch too many channels as it is, if they were all independent channels on aTV we would have a dozen or more rows of apps listed.

1) Food Network

2) NBC Sports Network

3) The above plus existing ones (ESPN, HBO, Disney, etc.) available as subscription without requiring cable/satellite

(And as a true "blue sky", some way to tap into an OTA solution, like streaming from the SiliconDust tuners - once they go native H.264 - or from Elgato's EyeTV)

Good one. Having access to OTA HD channels would be a huge plus.

Also, not necessarily a channel, but universal search would be wonderful. Let me tell the AppleTV what I want to watch and have the AppleTV tell me where I can watch it (sorted from free/ least expensive to most expensive).

Bu I've bought into Amazon, I have a library there I really don't want to buy again. I also like when you buy a blu ray they sometimes throw in a free instant video rental.

Ability to act as an AT&T Uverse receiver would be nice. No need to pay rent on it each month.

EWTN and BYU would be nice to have on the :apple:TV. They don't cost anything to stream and are available on other platforms.

INSP, would also be nice, even at a small cost.

Local Channels, what happened to the days when you could get these for free?

You will never see Amazon on Apple TV... unless they allow something similar to what Microsoft does on the Xbox... can't purchase/rent directly, but can access Amazon Prime videos and anything bought/rented from Amazon's website. I'd be perfectly fine with that implementation.

Anyway... top 3 channels/apps I guess:

Plex
Amazon
Verizon FiOS (And other providers... Comcast, etc)

In order of preference for me:

1) Amazon VOD
2) Discovery
3) NFL, pay per game

I don't subscribe to cable, so this "sign in with your cable account" stuff doesn't do me any good. I certainly like free programming, but I'm willing to pay for channels or shows/sporting events that I want to watch. I hope that we have more options in the future.

I have DirecTV and use Blurays.

But I am also an Amazon Prime member and haven't used the included streaming service.

I've read I could mirror it from my Mac Mini to ATV2.

Anyone have any suggestions? I guess I'll have to get the PS4;)

You should be able to use AirPlay from any Mac (running ML or later, IIRC) to an ATV3. I don't think that's supported in ATV2.

maybe there was an update, but the dns change left Netflix unusable until you changed the dns back...really thats all I would use it for, Plex, Netflix and I might airplay something every once in while...got to be kidding me if they think I am going to pay for the other channels.

1) Disney Junior (no idea why this wasn't included with XD and regular)
2) Nick (for the kids)
3) Sunday Ticket (although I do had a PS3 and get it that way)

Ultimately I'd settle for universal AirPlay on all my TV apps, only about half of the ones that added live-stream or all recent shows have it.

You must have installed Plexconnect wrong, the whole point of the program is to let you use all the ATV apps except the Trailers app which, instead, becomes the Plex interface.

I highly doubt you'll get one. Apple is not generally in the business of promoting apps that replace their stock ones - they're not going to open their arms for Plex when they want people to use iTunes.

I appreciate all the responses. I actually looked into a few of the “wants” shared that I was unfamiliar with.

There may be contracts etc that are barring those, even for UK folks. Sucks since from what I recall, you don't really get a choice about paying for a tv license. It would be nice if you could get the content however you like.

But for most flexibility...

Plex/PlexConnect (you can add a masive # of channels this way)

Amazon Player (their streaming, not purchase since it competes with iTunes)

Aereo (local channels)

Honestly, they should license or buy Plex. Then Add an app interface.

Make the search work to provide results across ALL your available services.

The Apple TV has so much potential but it is clearly held up by the greedy content providers. NFL channel would be great along with History channel. You all have some great suggestions, we clearly want to define our won experience and not subject ourselves any further to Time Warner, Comcast etc. By the way I am a cord cutter!!

Lord Hamsa
Feb 21, 2014, 06:47 AM
The Apple TV has so much potential but it is clearly held up by the greedy content providers.

Well, that's part of it. Another part (e.g., the NFL package) has to do with existing contractual obligations - using the NFL example, DirecTV paid a lot of money some years ago for exclusive rights through the 2014 season, which is why it isn't available anywhere else, ATV, FIOS, Comcast, you name it. But that contract expires at the end of the next football season, so we'll see what happens then.

The trend is in the cord-cutter's favor, but the market is still maturing. At some point, the ability of people to get most of what they want ala carte will drag the remaining providers into figuring out a way to accommodate that or else they will see any chance of profit walking away. In most cases, they control the data pipe connected to your house, so they'll still be in position to capitalize in some way on whatever you're doing.
