Have a MacBook Air with 128 flash storage about 6 months old. Came home one day and laptop dead. Apple says, storage failed and they will replace. Here is my problem.

I need to recover everything on the storage (drive). Yes I know failed to back up. There is a company that can recover the items but I have to remove the drive since they do not do that. Apple says they want to the drive to send to the lab to find out why it failed.

Clearly a catch 22. Apple will not replace my drive unless they get the old drive.

Suggestions?

Well, the issue boils down to: how valuable is the data to you? If the data is worth more to you than the laptop, then perhaps you should write off the value of it, and send it in to a data recovery firm. If it's NOT that valuable, then write off the data and send the MBA to Apple to get repaired under warranty.

What's worse, if you decide to try to recover your data, you should be warned that success is far from likely. SSDs are different from traditional hard drives, and whether the data can be recovered depends on the type of failure. If the issue involves a controller or electronics problem, then a company like DriveSavers might have some luck getting your data back. If it's the NAND Flash media itself, it's probably all toast.

Out of curiosity, do you happen to know if you have a Toshiba or Samsung SSD?

I believe all the 128GB models were Toshiba. They seem to dropping like flies all of a sudden.

I bet we don't see any more Sandforce controller drives like this from Apple.

Is it actually the controller that's failing on these? Something must be causing them to fail when the same controller is just fine in 2.5in SSD's.
