MacWorld Expo San Francisco 2003 (http://www.macworldexpo.com) kicks off next week at The Moscone Center in San Fracisco.
The event that everyone is waiting for is Steve Jobs' keynote address which has been the traditional announcement event for new product releases. MacWorld SF 2002 brought us the long anticipated LCD iMac.
Recent rumors have been pointing towards both the iMac and eMac lines as potential upgrades. This correlates with the Apple's product cycles... with the most recent updates already to have refreshed the Powerbook (Nov 2002), iBooks (Nov 2002), and PowerMacs (Aug 2002).
The eMac and iMac have seen minor bumps (Superdrive, 17" Screen) over the past year but their last major revisions have been in April 2002 and January 2002, respectively.
Rumors have been floating around for speed bumped iMacs (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2002/12/20021218202204.shtml) and eMacs (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2002/12/20021214122424.shtml). Recent information seems to indicate that Bluetooth will be integrated (at least) with the new iMacs.
While rumors of 19" iMacs were sparked in June by a Digitimes report (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2002/05/20020531185518.shtml), also rumored are 19" LCD's themselves. With the 15" LCD discontinued (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2002/10/20021021225205.shtml), Apple is in the position to move the product line into 17", 19", 23" tiered products. First rumors of such a move (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2002/09/20020929234735.shtml) date back to this time last year (2001) from Railheaddesign.com (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2001/12/20011202023546.shtml)
Beyond this, the most concrete information we have include definate iApp upgrades, a new Apple Application, and new "hardware/feature" -- which may prove to be Bluetooth. Other details are scarce.

What if apple comes out with a slimmer 20gb iPod or something?
I highly doubt that Bluetooth would be it...I think it might be something completely revolutionary (as usual, steve unveiling iBreakthroughs).

I'm thinking consumer machine upgrades, an iApp upgrades to go with the consumer machines. Sure would like to see some updates to iChat, iPhoto, iCal and iMovie.

I wouldn't be surprised if they announced FCP4. There are now prosumer level DV cameras (well, one, actually, i believe it's a Panasonic) that shoot in 24 fps and i think trade secret mentioned good 24 fps support for FCP4... That would suck for me though-- i just bought FCP3 about a month ago.

Final Cut Pro 4 is no where near release. Had they even been close to being able to show it off even just a little, they would have done so at the DV Expo in December. MacWorld's are not the best venue for releasing a product like Final Cut Pro. DV Expo is the best place for such a product and it only precedes the expo by a couple weeks.
I would say Final Cut Pro 4 will not be ready until at least summer 2003 or even longer then that. Many in the industry believe that Final Cut Pro 4 is in the early beta stages.

I think we'll see:
A new iPod with a color screen and QuickTime playback.
A new app called iVideo which is to movies what iPhoto is to Photos.
A new iMac with built-in Personal Video Recorder, which syncs videos with the new iPod.
iSync 1.0
iMovie 3
Bluetooth across the range.

I have no idea what to predict....?
I think we're definitely due for a Digital Device, but who knows?
Anyhoo......here are my pics:
SURE SHOTS -
iMac, eMac upgrades (duh), and a 19" screen
DIGITAL DEVICE -
Who knows? I think a camera, PDA, cellphone, quicktime watcher (color iPod), camcorder, and Tivo-device are all possible
RENDEVOUS-
Say hello to BlueTooth iStereo
AND THE WILDCARD -
The SuperBook....17" screen and 15 pounds of PURE POWER

ohhhh......and can't forget iTablet
I don't think we'll see iTablet this time.....but I do think that a detachable iMac screen is a possibility
Foocha
Dec 30, 2002, 05:41 AM
I think a Tablet is a good bet, but they'll only release one now if they can think of a way of differentiating it from Tablet PC, otherwise they'll wait to see if Tablet PC is a success before deciding whether to release it. The presence of Inkwell in Jagwire indicates that they have such a device up their sleeves just in case.
Personally, I don't think Tablet PC will be successful, so it may be some time before Apple launches such a product.

NAB is the place for a pro NLE release. i've heard a post house has been running a beta of 4 since september. i'm going with an NAB/april release of fcp4.
no idea what could be released at mwsf.
what i want released is an iPod with a mic input and record function.

I just hope they don't make it so that you have to be running iTunes on both ends to make it work -- I want to be able to use it without having to be logged in on the server end

I don't know about that. just did some research this morning and here's what I've found:
Best Buy is reporting all of their iPods as "on order" with a 5-7 day wait, except for the 20GB versions which are in stock
The Apple Store is quoting 3-5 waits on 5GB and 1-2 waits on 10s and 20s
Amazon.com is still reporting 24 hour turnaround.
I'm not sure what to think about the iPods they're a huge seller and I'd love to see an update. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed and remaining hopefull.

Oops...forgot to ask this in my last post.
Could someone tell me if we'll have to see a hardware change in the iPod to include MPEG4 or could this be done with software? Though I'm hoping for hardware updates exactelly how much could Apple do with software alone and make people feel they're getting a whole new iPod for no extra cost?
This makes lots of people happy because they can still use their old iPods and get new features. If that's the case then I think we're likely to see price drops and software features increase.

I hope Apple drops its prices on the iMacs as they did with the iBook.
I hate to say these kinds of things, but Dell is really being aggressive on pricing, selling a 15"LCD + desktop for $700!

Here's my theory:
Likely:
iApps upgrades
new iApp: "iMuse" or "iMusic" (iApp music production - they didn't buy that company for nothing you know!)
Maybe:
hardware updates - speed bumps
Outside:
Bluetooth
What I really want:
SuperDrive for older PowerBooks

I have a feeling we will see:
Demo on Powerbook DVD buring
Talk about iBook cost decrease
The Xserve RAID configuration released with nice little demo of the complete Apple server package (Xserve and RAID).
iTunes with Rendezvous (released and ready to download)
Demo of Bluetooth with HP Wireless Printers, Phillips Bluetooth stereo, and something new? Phillips stereo out soon
19" Apple Display, with price drops on entire line
Price drops on iMac and eMac line, with upgrades. No new 19" iMac
Release of iSync (with more support for Bluetooth mobile phones)
Upgrades to one iApp, no new iApp released
NO Tablet
NO Digital Device
No iPod upgrade

You forgot the 22" CD being dropped. I do, however, think we will see a new iDevice. Also, iTunes should be updated for bluetooth. iMovie is due, Applworks is due, iChat should get ICQ support, iCal is due as well. Not sure if the new iApp iPhone will debut, if it's a big bluetooth show then it has a chance.

I'm not quite sure they will get rid of the 22in. If they do, they would have to reduce the cost of the 23in to current (plus or minus) price of the 22in. I believe there still is a market for the 22in, especially because it's almost one thousand dollars cheaper than the 23in. Now, if they drop the 23in to the same price, maybe a hundred or so more than the current 22in, obviously the 22in market would be reduced. But I personally have been waiting for the 22in to drop in price; i have no need for the 23in HD, just the real estate. 22in is perfect for me, and even better at five hundred bucks cheaper. I think there are others overs who have this same need.

wired.com ran an artical today casually saying that you'll see it soon i.e. MWSF. The reason not to have this machine on this board I think is weak whether it be design issue or pricing. A $1999 price point is extremely competitive!:D

What I hope for (but probably won't get):
-Dual 1.8Ghz PowerPC 970 Power Mac with 800Mhz bus
I could see the release: Steve pits PowerMac against 3.06Ghz P4 Dell onstage, Power Mac burns P4 and audience cheers. Steve then demoes the PowerMac resizing a browser window perfectly and smoothly. And every mac user has a happy day.
What we probably will get:
-iMac updated to 867 and 1Ghz CPUs with 15" and 17" LCDs, graphics cards upgraded
-eMac updated to 800 and 867, maybe GF4s
-No laptop updates
-iPod price drop, maybe upgraded to 40GB assuming Toshiba or someone else has the drive, gets MP4 support (hopefully via software update so I can upgrade mine :D) ,no color screen
-iApps get minor updates, iTunes gets MP4 support, iSync is finalized to be compatible with...
-A new Digital Lifestyle Device similar to the Handspring Treo. Will run on 3G wireless networks (GPRS demoed at MWNY 2002, CDMA 2000 for Verizon(I hope)) and have Bluetooth support. Jobs said that the stuff Apple will release in '03 is really great, and I hope this is it.

Not sure if this is the right thread but I agree with Chad4Mac's predictions...not great but not bad either.
My prediction, right at the end of the keynote speech:
Jobs will say goodbye to the Macworld events (not the company) or at least hand it over to Phil Schiller.
I think the Macworld events will be phased out...think about it, no other company has to raise the bar so high everytime they have an event like Apple. Rather than do that they are positioning themselves with their retail stores such that they are getting good exposure on a broader level. They could easily have Macworld type events running over a couple of days running at each of the stores simultaneously where they can get better over all attendance than the currently dwindling attendances at macworld. Imagine...each store runs a mini macworld at the local level (even overseas :D ) and multiply the traffic that would pass through the store by a factor of ten and the total numbers would outstrip the current macworlds in numbers and exposure.
Anyway...I know we all love the hype of the current format but I think when you have such anticipation that cannot be matched it only hurts Apple.

I'm guessing they'll be a few surprise announcements from some Partner companies - further fulifilling Apple's idea of the digital hub. Philips Electronics, who previsouly announced support for Bluetooth in upcoming products, should make an appearance - maybe with a new bluetooth-enabled TV or flat panel. Or a stereo component. Use your Mac to play music on the stereo or display photos or video on a TV or screen, all using Bluetooth or 802.11.
Obviously speed bumps for the iMac and eMac are will be coming. There won't be a 19" screen though.
I also think the chances are high that Apple will introduce some other consumer device like a phone/PDA.

So when can i get my bluetooth toaster and microwave......
My guess will we that apple will start selling kitchen appliances that are compatable with bluetooth and expand the ditigal hub idea to the digital kitchen and from there to the digital house ...just think of it bluetooth enable windows that u can open from ur computer....... wow cant wait
glad i got a bluetooth adapter for my ibook (for my phone of corse)

Shows off Rendezvous
iTunes 4.0 w/ Rendezvous released, Steve plays "Loveshack" for us
Talks about how well the retail stores are doing
A couple of Apple Stores will be opening in a few weeks
iSync good to go, updates to some other software
A whole crapload of iSync/Bluetooth phone demos
New .mac features introduced
Phil Schiller has a Powermac do Photoshop against a P4
Steve drinks some bottled water
Steve says "look at the cheaper iBooks/Powerbooks"
Updated iMac lines
Price drop on eMac line
Steve drinks some bottled water
Keynote closes to the tune of "Loveshack" again

HAHAHA! Sounds like the last few that I saw!
At least they play nice classical music before the show.
It was kind of a bummer when the first lump-stick-rectangle sunflower iMac came out. Thanks to my being a freak and hanging out on rumor sites all night prior to the Stevenote, I tripped upon the Time Canada article, which ruined it for me, and for others I'm sure. But it was still something to get the scoop prior to its debut...remember those days? Boy, howdy, did Apple tease the heck out of us with those Countdown splash pages.
Other things I predict:
Steve clears his throat.
Drinks water from bottle that has no label.
Steve clears his throat.
Demos how great the updated iPhoto is with digital camera.
Discovers some moron let the batteries die on the camera.
Clears throat.
Clears throat.
Throws camera at stagehand and looks QUITE annoyed.
Tells us all to try it at home.

It makes me sad, that this may very well become a reality. It would be enjoyable to have events at my local store. Would miss out on the educational opportunites available at a MW.
Hopefully if there were these events at the local stores, vendors would participate and offer special pricing.
Without Apple at a MW, attendance would drop off dramatically!

The only thing I'd REALLY like to see is a better mail client. Mac Mail is really pretty bad. I used it religiously for one month and was never sure something would come up missing. Therefore, with a crappy mail client, iSync is useless to me. I use Entourage. Can iSync work with it? The Mac Mail junk filter is great, but not enough to offset the power of Entourage. That said, serious iSync/Mail upgrades will make me switch in a heartbeat.
As for machines, I really don't care. Well, I CARE, but what I have is fine, and these upgrades drive themselves. Take care of the schools though.
A GOOD Mac-based browser would be nice, but IE is pretty good to me... except for the mysterious quits and other minor anomalies.
I use Photoshop, but iPhoto enhancements would be nice. Apple, why not buy Graphic Converter and roll it into iPhoto? Most folks don't use Layers and CMYK anyway.
iMovie could use a few enhancements... like better text support and maybe a non-linear component. Compositing maybe?
Get an Apple-branded two-button scroll mouse for crying out loud! I can't live without one.
My personal needs are few, but they had better do something about their chips pronto. 1.83Ghz is not enough, and the issue has never made much sense to me since the technology exists to get into the single-digit micron topography.
Heck, I could go on, and I expect to be WAY off like usual. One thing is for sure, it's always a nice ride isn't it? Last year when I saw the new iMac pop up on stage I though..ugh. Until I used one that afternoon. Fun stuff.
