View Full Version : iPad 3 owners, try changing Wallpaper to see REAL lag!

iPad 3 owners (and some iPad 4 owners) are reporting considerable lag when changing Wallpapers under iOS 7.

If you've got an iPad 3 or iPad 4, try it! Go to Settings/Wallpapers & Brightness and then go through the steps to select and confirm different Wallpaper for BOTH the Lock Screen and the Home Screen. Enjoy the incredible lag feeling of it all. If you have "Reduce Motion" turned off (the default in Settings/General/Accessibility), it will be particularly bad. At times, it will feel like your iPad has locked up. Particularly when you touch the white text "Set Lock Screen" or "Set Home Screen". Sssssllllllloooooowwwwwwer than hell!

And there's a general feeling of lag in many other areas too. Particularly while typing. The automatic switches back to the letters group from the numbers group (such as when you touch an apostrophe in a word) is one example. A delay that feels like a disconnect from the device.

My iPad now feels like an Android tablet! <sigh>

I have the same issue. I basically can't change the wallpaper. It doesn't let you scale properly and the lag is horrible. I originally did an upgrade from 6.1.4 and noticed the wallpaper selection lag. Then I erased everything and restored my iPad 3 as new. Still have the lag...

I agree, ipad + iOS7 = lags as on Android. Went back to iOS6, and hope they will fix this in the next update.

How do you know if its lag, as opposed to that's how long it takes to save the change in 7?

It scales properly. But it scales large for the paralax effect.

If you want it to scale like iOS6, enable reduce motion in General settings.

Come on folks this is getting silly.

I own an ipad 3 and apart from the lag between letters and numbers I have not had any issues. This device is a year old, sure not old by any standards but not brand new either the software is BRAND NEW! Why would we expect no lag? This nonsense about wall papers!?! Seriously how often do you all change wall papers? For me this is about every few months at best! I think its absurd you are all moaning about something so abstract!

Same here.Went to change mine and it was lagging so bad I thought it was frozen. I was touching different pics and was getting no response. I did mine OTA yesterday while my iMac is being repaired and I was scared I would just have to wait until my iMac came back. Other than that I have no issue and love the way ios 7 looks

Lag is lag... There is no excuse of being lag. A year and half old iPad should not lag like that... I don't care if the software is brand new or not. Beside, it is not just wallpaper lag, everything is slower than iOS 6

no disrespect...but i'm glad you don't work in the sw quality department at apple lol

the lag is unacceptable...point, blank, period. i am experiencing it too with my ipad 3. i'm sure it will get fixed with the next sw release.

It's not silly for people with an ipad3.

If the device is only year old and it lags doing something on the operating system (not an app), then it needs to be fixed.

That time it takes is the lag. It's such a simple task that it shouldn't take any longer than in the past (when it was almost instantaneous).

iOS 7 is running about the same speed on my 3 year old iPhone 4 as on my iPad 3 which is half the age. Not particularly great, especially when the text on screen can't keep up with my typing speed...

So I can't seem to get it to actually change the lock screen wallpaper. I hit "set as lock screen" and no actual change occurs. Anyone else seeing this?

Same problem with lag or crashes, changing wallpaper, here on my iPad 3 + iOS 7!

I always read lag as a delay between press and the action. In that context there may not be a lag, but it will feel like a lag if there is not visual feedback that something is occurring.

I get that its slower. IRC this is the kind of thing that happened on previous iOSes at launch but were fixed in the subsequent updates.

If I did that a lot, it would bother me.

The lag is the worst when I try to change the wallpaper but it's not limited to that. I notice it when I type, when I switch between apps and when I switch between landscape and portrait modes. It's not like my ipad became unusable but the lag is making me want to use it less. I'm sure they'll fix this in 7.0.1 or 7.1 and I hope it comes soon

Sometimes I feel that apple really hates the ipad 3. The device is only 1 year old and we're not getting airdrop or the blur effect while the ipad mini - which is basically an ipad 2- will.

I have an ipad 3! I just don't get how when everything is running fine people find something they will rarely even use to complain about. Wish my life was so strait forward this lag was that big a deal. Personally I'm pleased the keyboard runs so fast, faster I have noticed than ios6 for typing! Often on 6 the would become e as I typed too fast for it to register the first two letters this is rarely happening now. Functionally the device has improved significantly, yet people moan about a bit of eye candy they rarely use lagging. It just doesn't add up for me.

Here is another thread where this is happening. My iPad 3 basically locks up when I try to scale an image and then cancel.

Some one the iPad section posted this:

Go into general settings to the bottom, go to reset, then hit reset all settings.

Then power down the iPad and restart it, this cleared all the lag and the unresponsive, delay on my keyboard also. iOS 7 has been great after I performed the above.

This. The 5 seconds of lag experienced:frequency of background changed is THAT big of a deal to be so upset about it? "Feels like an android tablet"...no, it doesn't.

Again, such a small inconvenience being blown out of proportion.

While there is a "lag" and Apple could have included an indicator to show that something was happening, it's not THAT bad. As someone noted, how many times does one actually change their wallpaper? I've changed my wallpaper a few times since updating to experience this issue and it is not a deal-breaker by any means.

Because it's not just simple tiny input lag when you change wallpaper it becomes completely unresponsive for a good 15 or so seconds, I'd expect something like that from a garbage $90 tablet from Walgreens not from the iPad 3 and especially not from the still beastly iPad 4. Apple has been marketing the hell out of the parallax and dynamic wallpapers so yeah there is a good chance everyone is going to want to try changing them after they install this update on their iPads and think they just broke something.

It is ludicrous to expect lag on a device that is a year old... I have an iPad 3 and this is not a cheap device by any means. If anything, it cost more than a lot of PC laptops and netbooks. I've installed Jellybean on the original Galaxy S (iPhone 4 equivalent, likely even worse) and it runs smooth... No where dear the amount of lag that I'm seeing in newer apple devices.

Should we just lie down every year and cough up another thousand dollars so we can do simple tasks like typing? Such a shame that we would have such high standards such as sending an email or taking down a few notes.

I expect his from android after several years but not from apple after just a year.

My ipad3 lags horribly. I have up trying to scale my photo for a wallpaper and loaded an ipad friendly resolution one. I have none of the other issues others have spoken about though I do wish I had the blur, transparent folders, and transparent "bar" at the bottom. Because of these (what I read were removed from the GM but present in some betas) it looked nasty with my original wall paper so I had to change.

^This. If I wanted a tablet that lagged, I would've gotten a cheap Android tablet. I would expect the iPad 2 to lag a bit but not the iPad 3. Instead, iPad 2 and mini owners are having less problems with iOS 7 than iPad 3 owners. The 3rd generation iPad was supposed to be the latest iPad if Apple didn't decide to release another one only after 6 months so no, it shouldn't lag that much.

I have a iPad mini which has the internal components of a iPad 2 and it's just fine on iOS 7 even with parallax on. Try rebooting your iPad?

Did anyone notice an improvement when updating to 7.0.3 with the wallpaper lag?

I was able to go back to iOS 6 just before Apple stopped signing it, so I'm just on standby.

Yes it's faster and says "setting wallpaper" until it's done.
