I asked this in the "Stupid Questions" thread but it got burried without an answer.

Is there any way to enable iTunes Radio over cellular data, without allowing Auto App Updatings over cellular (but still retaining Auto App Update over Wi-Fi)? I would like to limit my Auto App updates to only when I am on Wi-Fi. However, I would also like to be able to listen to iTunes Radio while I am in the car (over cellular).

It appears that iTunes Radio requires "Automatic Downloads" to be set to allow "Over Cellular Networks" to be turned on if you want to listen to iTunes Radio while out and about, because it considers iTunes Radio to be an "Automatic Download".

But this is a global toggle. If you allow iTunes Radio access to cellular data AND you have Auto App Updates enabled, these too will be downloaded over cellular which can kill your battery and data plan.

Am I missing something? Can I not use iTunes Radio over cellular without my Apps Auto Updating without turning on/off these toggles every time I want to use iTunes Radio?

Was just going to post this same question. Clearly there needs to be a seperate toggle to allow iTunes Radio over cellular data and another toggle to be able to restrict music and app updates to wi-fi. In the meantime I guess I will have to leave app-update on manual

Very dissappointing. It would seem these two great new features are... mutually exclusive.

What's the point of having "Auto" App Update if you have to manually go in and enable it to avoid it using your cellular data all the time?

That works for me too, but that's not the issue. What doesn't work is, I want automatic downloads only over Wi-fi. So automatic app update is "ON" (so it will work over wi-fi), but you should be able to have it update ONLY over wi-fi. To do this, I switch "OFF" the "Use Cellular Data" option.

Unfortunately, this switch also prevents iTunes Radio from using cellular data, which seems like a severe limitation.

From what I understand you can go into your cellular settings instead, and switch off cellular data use for the App Store specifically. This way you can retain cellular usage for iTunes Radio while the automatic downloads from the app store are disabled unless you're on wifi.

I'm trying to confirm this is true though by ensuring disabling the App Store cell usage does in fact include automatic downloads as well.

Just tested this out and it works, automatic downloads were queued while iTunes Radio continued playing. The only downside is that you can't access the App Store at all while you're on cellular, so if you just want to browse for apps you'll have to wait till you're on wifi. Seems like an acceptable tradeoff for me though.

Accessing the App Store over cellular should still be allowed whilst limiting auto downloads to wifi only.

What is the best way to notify Apple of these types of requests for future iOS updates?

iTunes Radio isn't an auto download. It's streaming audio. It shouldn't be lumped into this menu toggle.

This really bugs me also. Seems like apple and the iPhone "carriers" have discreetly made a deal with each other and tried to slide this one thru. All this does is mask a great feature into another feature and cause users to increase data usage without realizing it. Eventually little things like this will add up to another reason we will have to start increasing our data plans. This will do nothing but make money for the carriers and probably also get paid back to apple as well.

I just wanted to add my little comment months later that disabling the App Store under Cellular Data works as stated, but this is still an annoying issue that should be separated out into at least one more option to allow for iTunes Radio over cellular without also giving permission to automatic downloads over cellular.
