Hello - my attempts to fix a clogged up microphone on an iPad 2 ended with the microphone totally dead :-(

So I am now looking for an external cheap microphone, so that my mom can use her iPad for Skype.

Few questions to someone who might have done this:
- when I plug in an microphone into the 3.5mm jack, will the internal speakers work ? ( this is desirable, mom would not want to use a full headset )
- how does the iPad know if the plugged-in device has a mic-only, vs. a full headset ? Does it detect the "load/resistance" of the headphone drivers ?
- will a cheap dynamic mic work ?

Thanks for any info/pointers. Paul C.

If you plug in a mic to the 3.5mm jack the internal speakers will not work, the iPad makes the assumption that a full headset has been plugged into the iPad. At least this is what I discovered previously in iOS 6.
