Title should have read Is it worth paying *extra* for the i5? (2013, 13"))

I was all set on the i5 and now the i7 is in the Refurbished Store for cheaper than the i5 configuration I wanted (8ram/256ssd), $1319 versus $1399.

Battery life is more important to me than performance. Is it crazy to pay extra for the i5?

I tend to keep a lot of programs open at once, but the programs I use seem pretty basic (word + excel + browser with tons of tabs + Civilization + Acrobat Pro). Will I get any benefit at all from the i7?

Given what you've said, get the i5.
It is plenty fast and you get the best battery life possible.
Get 8GB RAM and the biggest drive you can afford, unless you plan on turning them over every year like I do.
Then get the smallest disk you can live with- higher specced Air's depreciate more.

With the specs you listed for the i5 it's more than enough good. i7 is more for gaming and video editing purposes.

Thanks all.

I do appreciate the links to past threads, as well as the willingness to engage in this one. If the cost were the same I would absolutely not think twice about the i5. It just feels funny to pay extra for the i5 but it sounds like it may be worth it and I won't be giving up anything either.

What? The i5 costs more than i7? No, don't pay more for an i5.

Wow I really blew it with a huge mistake in the title of my post!

Yes, presumably if the model I want of i5 ever comes up in the refurbished store it will be less, but who knows if/when that will happen, so I'm comparing the cost for the refurbished i7 to a new i5, and the i7 is less.

Paying a little more for an i7 is definitely worth it. Getting it cheaper than an i5 is a no brainer.

so what's the question?
