I have had TiVo for 6 months, and you can't beat it! It is absolutely fabulous. I have no regrets, not even over the price and I am a cheap college student. If you are in the market for a PVR, TiVo is the best thing out there, by far!!!

I have one. It's called a VCR! It's personal and it records:p

I did about 60 days of research before buying a ReplayTV 5xxx.

Here's what I found out:
Tivo is more friendly, but sadly also more simple.
Replay has a slightly higher learning curve, but some really great features (programming remotely via the web, automated Commercial Advance, etc.)
Tivo allows you to record something you've watched up to 20 minutes of. Replay does not.
Replay has broadband, Tivo does not.
Tivo has slightly better program info. Replay has slightly more program info.
Replay program swapping can save you if you missed that must have show, but it takes ages.
Replay has slighly better video quality, especially on larger monitors.
Tivo is 1-2 seconds faster at channel changing.
Replay's support sucks moist a$$.
Replay has better theming, but poorer conflict resolution.
Tivo has great integration with certain satellite systems.
Replay is more hacker friendly.

At the moment, I would equate Replay to linux, and Tivo to XP or OS9. There is no OSX in this maket yet.

This last line is funny since if I remember right the OS that TiVo uses is Linux.

I have a Sony TiVo DirecTV receiver and it rocks. Nuff said.

Yeah, I didn't think about it when I posted that. I meant in terms of exstensibilty/ease of use trade offs.

Linux is rampant in ebedded component OSes. My stereo MP3 player is Linux (HP-de100c). The Tivo & Replay are linux. [edit: Apparently the ReplayOS is a mystery, based on something called Sutter. I had assumed it was linux based on some of the hacking docs I'm reading]

Linux is a brilliant OS if you don't have to see it!

hey i have been shopping for either an eyetv or formac studio dv/tv for the past 6 months. i was wondering if you could answer a question for me. the website you use. TitanTv.com EyeTV says that it only works with internet explorer. I checked out the site in chimera and everything works fine... but i can not test the part where you click a show and it launches your tv viewer (since i havent bought one yet). i was wondering if anyone who uses titantv knows if it is true that only IE does this.

i am pretty discouraged by the options at this point. it seems that both the eyetv and formac studio have mixed reviews. the tivo and replaytv seem to depend on hacks and third party software to do any of the things i want, and require a membership and monthly fee. all of the options seem far too expensive for what they deliver.

I have never really ever thought of recording anything from tv. I
watch everything when it comes on. So I have nothing video
recording wise.

EyeTV launches explorer whenever you click the guide button. As for using chimera manually, i just tried to no avail... i do know that Watson supports EyeTV if you have it.

I'm usually only home for a few hours a day so the TiVo really works well for me. I hardly ever watch live tv anymore. I have it set to record anything motorcycle related and all my favorite series also.

Love it, but waiting for the upcoming enhancements. Also waiting for 5xxx apps to DL to my MAC and then save to CD or DVD. Fun, fun, fun.

An interesting tidbit...

There are more homes with outhouses than there are houses with a PVR unit.

Just so you know...
