WINDOWS: any way to check hard drive status?

Ok, so its a Windows question...

does anyone know of any programs or ways to check the hard drive status to see if it is healthy or failing?

nope, you need to download a SMART status utility. But usually on PC's (at least on all mine) when the computer boots up it will automatically check the status, if the hard drive is failing it will tell you.
I found out this when I installed a hd and accidently cut the ide cable on the chasis.
Another funny note; on some pc's when the smart status fails it prevents you from starting the computer up. Making me wonder how they think i should get my data off it.

Wait, doesn't the hard drive console tell you the SMART status?

If so, the only way I can remember to get to it (there are others) is when you have "My Computer" visible on your desktop to right click on it, select "Manage", then go to the Drives (or whatever) option. It'll tell you lots about your drives, and I thought SMART status was in there, too.

That info might be in the Properties window for the drive as well.

Open "My Computer", right click one the drive in question, select Properties, select the Tools tab, click on the Check Now button, check both boxes and then click start and cross your fingers.

This should apply to Win XP and Win 2k. Don't have a 2k machine around to verify. If by chance it happens be a Win 9x or ME machine, then under start / programs/ accessories/ tools / there should be a similar option.
