I have a lot of new ones I am considering.
Note - some of these would need to be resized and/or compressed.
Anyway.. let me know if any of these stand out. :)

Um, yeah...the milk carton stands out. It's making me ill. Can you slow it down a bit?
Jaffa Cake
May 1, 2006, 04:23 PM
I'd go with the Arsenal tube station. As WildCowboy says, animated 'tars can be a little distracting, and a lot of people already use South Park 'tars so you might not stand out too much with that one.
And there's always the risk that if you use the other one people might actually think you're Jeremy Clarkson. :p

May 1, 2006, 04:31 PM
Thanks you two. I find the milk carton a little fast and annoying too. I like the Arsenal South Park one.. still a possibility.. but maybe it will be Arsenal tube station for a bit. :)
EDIT: The JC one rocks! ;)
I must say, the Jeremy Clarkson one does amuse me, in spite of myself. :D
i guess i'll save this one in here for posterity.
Oh I wouldn't about saving that for posterity if you ever delete it just PM me I'm using as my desktop.:D

Nothing to do with him and you(or your 'tar) sharing the same hair-do is it?
Nothing to do with him and you(or your 'tar) sharing the same hair-do is it?
That's an outrageous comment! <looks at hair nervously in mirror>
:p
Actually, as a teenager my hair was actually fairly Clarkson-esque at times. That'll be why all the kids beat me up then. :o I have learnt to tame the beast since then, which is fortunate. :D

I have been a member for what seems like forever. How do I earn the right to have my choosen AVATAR show? I don't just want to make lame posts to hit 600. I have read that sometimes exception is given to participating people. Is this true? How can I ask for grace, or what's the best way to get my avatar on here to is shows.
Thanks

I'm thinking of something new myself, since I've had this painting for so long.
I'm thinking something to do with myself, maybe cameras or design related in some way.
Wonderful.
Two design degrees, not creative enough to think up an avatar.

Figure I would throw mine in this thread too while I'm posting here. Had this one since I could use a 'tar (which hasn't been too long :D). A nice little hanging painting with an apple logo. (And while it's probably too small to make out, the painting is actually a neat little blur picture I took while driving around, NOTE: I was the passenger, REMEMBER KIDS, don't drive and do flash photography!) ;)

No memo, just an enthusiastic desire for a contest.
Just to add to that, it was also worn by higher members of the clergy - bishops, cardinals, popes etc for the same reason.

In the guides, it says that you can be given an Avatar for winning a contest even if you haven't reached 500 posts. By the amount that i have posted today, it won't be long anyway.

If and when there is a contest, anyone can submit appropriate images as attachments and in the past, the winner was allowed to use that 'tar even if s/he didn't have 500 posts yet. But if you check the contests forum out, you'll notice that it doesn't necessarily happen all that often (contests).
I just checked... the first contest was held in August 2004. The second one was in May 2006.

Hey Jaffa Cake, I have kind of a funny story for you. An English colleague of mine walked past my desk just now as I was reading the thread and he says to me, "do you know what that is?", pointing at my screen. Confused, I said,"umm, work?". He then said, no, the little guy on the left hand side. I said, no, it's a figurine, I guess (I'm American, btw). He then goes on to inform me that it is a subbuteo figure (hey, I learned something), and that he was quite good at it as a child. In fact, he played for England when he was 12-16, traveling around Europe. I had no idea! He even has old newspaper clippings of him in his England kit playing against Italians and Dutch in competition.
So, now I more fully appreciate your avatar.
Cheers!

It's what I was listening to most when I made that 'tar. I figured I could change the big albums every so often when I get a new favourite.
For the moment, it's Goldfrapp's Supernatural, Lisa Miskovsky's Falling Water, Jack Johnson's In Between Dreams and Jose Gonzalez's Veneer - since I also wanted some good 'visual' covers and there were other 'favourites' that just didn't look good shrunk down.

These are the ones I've used to date. As you can see, there's a bit of a theme going - I initially planned to change the avatar to reflect my mood - sunny for happy, cloudy/rainy if I was down/annoyed etc, but this proved too much like hard work, and I tend to muddle along in a kind of half happy/half grumpy kind of mood anyway, so the current one stuck.
I used the full sun one when I was trying to will good weather for the London picnic (it worked!) and the thunder cloud for when I had a huge week long fall out with my girlfriend (now fully patched up).

You need to have 500 posts (http://guides.macrumors.com/Help:MacRumors_FAQ#I_can.27t_upload_an_avatar) for an avatar. It seems like a lot, but doesn't take too long if you stop by regularly.

Static tars (jpeg) will rarely - if ever - go over the size limit. So yes, just crop, resize and save as jpeg (or gif, depending on what you want).
Animated avatars can be made with eg imageready. Tweaking could be necessary to get it within size spec.
