Moderator Note: As Lacero mentions, please add your current avatar to your post as an inline attachment (http://guides.macrumors.com/Inline_Attachments). If you don't do this, your post will make no sense when you change your avatar.

I am creating this thread to keep a record of user avatars. Feel free to post your latest avatar, perhaps a word or two about why you chose that particular one, and date of 'avatarial birth'.

Mine will be posted soon, however I'm on my laptop and I accidentally removed my avatar trying to play along with that demi-god(dess) game of the fading avatars. So until I can get back to my other Mac at home, this will be my contribution for now.

[empty] - Dec. 4, 2005

edit: Before I forget, save your avatar as an inline attachment.

Here's to the Crazy Ones http://forums.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=35452 (http://www.uriah.com/apple-qt/movies/think-different.mov)

It is readily distinctive and the ones that are associated easily with members all share that type of quality.

Mine is right under my user name for all to see. I rarely change it unless to signify something important personally. It is my public 'face' on these forums and by keeping it the same it more strongly reinforces a projected identity over time.

It's also easy to spot when looking through a long thread and it matches the general colour palette of the forums as well as the colour of our user-names.

As well as being a photoshopped crop of a still from my favorite-ever film, it also says something about my relative need for privacy and seclusion and anyone familiar with the film 'Blue Velvet' would also know that it represents themes such as secrecy and depravity but also optimism.

For a few hours once I changed it for the Pirate Game on April 1st... but I can't find that 'tar anymore... and when I was off ill and absent from these boards for some months I changed it to this:

Yours is among the most highly recognizable avatars and it is a great match for the reasons you provided. When I was permitted to choose one, I was going to use a picture of an actress I always liked and still miss almost 25 years since her untimely and questionable death -- Natalie Wood. Since I thought it could have had more clarity and brightness, I decided not to use it.

I've had the same avatar since I hit 500 posts – just a little Subbuteo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subbuteo) player in the colours of our local team. I did toy with the idea of changing it a while back, but I've grown quite fond of the little chap so I decided to stick with him.

Saying that, I do have a couple of slight variations up my sleeve for the future... ;)

Only just got to 6502 status today, so just went for a plain simple anti-Windows avatar. It's the image of a old and simple Windows keyboard, with the only three keys you'll ever need for that OS: Ctrl, Alt, Del.

I've used this avatar since Apple announced the Tiger specs on apple.com, and I saw the Bonjour logo.

Its perfect for me, because there are three dots (dotdotdot) connected together.

So when people see that avatar, they know its me because a) I haven't changed it in a LONG time, and b) because my name is Dotdotdot and there are three dots...

Except for April Fools, I've always had my tree as an avatar. When I made my first website, I wanted some sort of logo/symbol, so I made that tree to represent my life. For some reason a couple of my friends are really fond of the tree, so I've kept it. I didn't really have anything else to use for my avatar, so I've just used the tree.

The Late Show was and still is the greatest sketch comedy show ever made in the history of the world. Yes that includes SNL,Little Britain and The Comedy Company.

Blue Velvet, I appreciate your constancy w/r/t your avatar. There is something non-verbal and reassuring about a constant avatar; there is no need to look at the poster's name. Before the demi-games started, I really started to develop a familiarity with posters here. Not that I don't appreciate the cleverness of the games.

After 2 years of posting now and again I am creeping towards an avatar; I plan to use the one below-- it is from the cover of a 1987 edition of one of my favorite books; William Faulkner's Absalom Absalom; it is an artist's interpretation (heavily influenced by Thomas Hart Benton) of Colonel Sartoris.

Currently using the lovely Miss Garner, mostly because of a joke about so many people using images of women as their avatars. For a short time, I used the bondage woman, which is the cover image from the album Signify by Porcupine Tree.
I've also used several Marilyn Manson images at one time or another. I think as many people were thrown off by my dropping MM as were thrown off by my recent name change.

Mine is under my name.

It started as a CAD project for one of my classes. Then I joined an aviation forum (x-plane.org) and realized I had the perfect material for an original avatar there. To I took a couple of screen shots in different propeller rotations and made a gif. As you can tell, this is not something I do regularly.

Anyway, so when I hit 500 posts I wanted something here but couldn't think of anything else so I used the one I already had. Besides it is more unique than a mac supporting one on these forums and I don't need that anyway since my allegiances should be quite obvious simply from the fact that I have 500 hundred posts on this website.

And that is probably more info that any of you wanted about my avatar. Sorry.

I started off with the first one, which I stole from someone on Macfora. He stopped using it, and then I joined MacRumors and got to 500 posts rather quickly ;)
When the Demi's had their "hair" game, I added Santa's beard, and only thought to remove it last week. Of course, this being December, I decided to let it stay for now. But I think I just found a new avatar for the holidays :D

I need to find out how to make animated GIFs that DON'T look like ****. Anyone know of an app to use?

Primarily one of these three. I've occationally changed to others for a brief moment, but I'm not going to bother posting those.

First, from left, was the first one I used after my 500th post. Changed it a bit later to no. 2 for reasons I don't remember now. Both are the same character from the same (fairly known) game.

Not too long ago (couple a months or so?) I changed to no. 3 which is what I'm using now. Also character from a game, although one I created myself (character that is, not game :p). I very much liked my creation so I figured I'd use it as my MR tar. The rest of the character (neck and below) is rather interesting too...

#4 is the Halloween version I made and used for a short time, and #5 is the Xmas version. Thanks to Lacero for the hat!

I have had this avatar since I could have one... It is in tribute to the 12 years in the making Guns N' Roses 'Chinese Democracy' album, which at this point, will probably never come out. My current one is just the HD logo right off the Quicktime site, nothing too fancy. I had illusions of grandeur when I could finally use an avatar, and it happened while I was at work, so I pretty much got stuck with this.

Should be something more exciting down the line, as soon as I can muster together the free time (and patience) to make myself something snazzy.

In the meantime, enjoy my HD...

Mine goes with my screen name -- it was drawn by Michele Light a few years ago: http://www.michelelight.com/aboutme.htm

The more interesting story is my screen name. For the fun of it, back in the early 1990s, I started using Tracy Kaye as an anonymous online handle/screen name. I used to tell people I was Danny Kaye's niece (which is a lie, but no-one ever picked up on the fact that "Kaye" wasn't Danny's last name, let alone the niece part). My last name starts with a K, so "Kaye" is just a phonetic spelling. Tracy Kaye became TracyKaye sometime during that time, and for a while I went to a couple of SciFi/Fantasy events and adopted "Foxy" as my nickname - long story, but it has to do with Jimi Hendrix's song "Foxy Lady" and a lot of late-night parties. Eventually, TracyKaye became FoxyKaye, and I've been using these screen names ever since. When I ran into Michele doing anthropomorph drawings, I couldn't resist getting one as "FoxyKaye."

Once I achieved 'tar-able status I went with The Architect from The Matrix movies. Being labelled a Solutions Architect in several jobs, I liked the way he stated "I am the architect."

For Halloween this year, he needed an eye-patch.

Then I SouthPark-ized him.

Now, he's SouthPark-ized and he wears a Santa hat. (And with that hat and the beard and white hair, he does rather look like Father Christmas from the neck up, doesn't he? I can hear him now, "I am the architect. I created the holiday."

I've used this image from Eraserhead since post #500. Not only is it one of my favorite films of all time (I went to see it on my very first date in 1981), but it also fits nicely with my screen name.

I just saw this movie after recognising the image from your avatar.

One of the weirdest, creepiest, most disturbing movies I've seen in awhile.

I just recently hit post number 500 and here's my first avatar. Calvin from the comic Calvin and Hobbes. This one has a Christmas theme (hence the holly). I'll stick with this and make subtle changes like other members do by changing what he holds in his hand, what kind of hat he wears etc depending on the holiday.

I went with Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes because I like it as a theme for me now that I've switched to the Mac. I have fun using Macs and I've always held a sentimental value on reading Calvin and Hobbes and what Calvin embodies with regard to being a kid, having fun and nurturing imagination. :D

Anyway, your avatar can be seen by everyone. Your profile picture can only be seen by members, and not by lurkers. Avatar sizes go up to 75x75 pixels and profile pics can go up to 150x150 pixs. Hope that helps.

Not really. If you're an active member of the MR community, as you appear to be becoming due to your posting rate, you'll hit 500 in no time. Plus, it shouldn't be all about having a little picture under your name and striving for 500 posts "just because".

What do you mean by "people like me"? What are you accusing me of doing? Hey, I just joined the board, man. :(

There is no PM function, it's her e-mail that is disabled.

I took Lacero to be female as well. At least, that's the impression I get from her various posts, the avatar and the public profile photo (if that's her, which also looks a lot like the avatar).
http://forums.macrumors.com/image.php?u=46400&dateline=1137013825&type=profile

Why would a dude use a photo of a female in an avatar and in a public profile? Unless it was some kind of a tribute to his wife or something. But then, why would someone post a photo of his wife for public consumption? The profile says "Lacero's picture". However, the post mentioning a "wife" has me scratching my head.

Is Lacero a male, a female, a shemale, a tranny, a gay cowboy or a video game character like Lara Croft, who knows?

Mine is in honor and memory of John Kelley, two time olympic marathoner who won Boston in 1935 and '45 and ran an incredible 61 Boston Marathons! He died in 2004 at the age of 96. The Boston Marathon '06 is on April 17. I'll probably change it afterwards.

Not quite sure what you mean by that, but that avatar was me in a hat that I got for free, and I felt it looked cool, although I haven't left much to imagination with my newest 'tar:

I usually use my character Mac, I love'm and he seems to be pretty popular around here, (Thanks!) :D

The one of me waving my finger ( yeah..that's me  ) is cool but looks bad compressed to that size. The one of Mac, my character, dancing with the iPod is my previous avatar, I now have this Mac Pirate one because everyone had an eye patch and I just wanted to be popular! Haha. The one with Mac trying to get the butterfly is one of my favorite. Then there are two holiday avatars I made, and last is a Sonic the Hedgehog and Apple avatar, I don't remember when I made that but, I found it so why not post it.

Hope you guys like it! I'd show more but...you know 5 attachment limit per post :p :D

I was running late for a game of UT 2004 so I couldn't fine-tune it but, I'll slow it down (how I originally wanted it) the only reason he's waving so fast (besides the possible overdoes of easter candy) is that I duplicated the animation where the first loop he blinks, and the second he doesn't.

This was so he wasn't blinking every 2 seconds but, I'll fix it tonight. I'm so happy you guys like my little character :D This really makes my day! :)

Are you kidding me, I've seen it, heard it, saved it to file, have it in audio format.

Can you believe that I have 8 Versions of Total Eclipse of the heart, 9 including the MIDI polyphonic version that I cropped into a ring tone (I also made it 8db louder and 6% faster). I also have the original music video.

Here are all the versions I have

1) Total Eclipse of the Heart 4:30 min -Bonnie Tyler (my personal favorite, the radio edit)

2) Total Eclipse of the Heart 5:30 min -Bonnie Tyler (version from the music video)

3) Total Eclipse of the Heart 7:00 min -Bonnie Tyler (original uncropped version)

4) Total Eclipse of the Heart - Beth (some lady with a hispanic voice)

5) Total Eclipse of the Heart Techno Remix - Nikki French

6) Total Eclipse of the Heart - Hurra Torpedo (really weird)

7) Total Eclipse of the Heart - The Dan Band (As heard in "Old School" movie. Explicit and very funny for first time listeners)

8) Total Eclipse of the Heart - Jan Wayne (not good sounding at all)

I have a couple more versions I have to get including the a cappella version from the SoCal VoCals. There is also Jessica Sierra and kiki & herb.

UPDATE: I got another version but the quality is so so. If only it was better. It is by jessica sierra, an american idol contestant. It is HORRIBLE, they made the song 1.5min long, by cutting out parts and taking parts and putting them together, it sounds soo bad. I'll have to get the good 4:33 version off of iTunes.

I also got the SoCal VoCals, its funny, not very good, but funny. It almost sounds like a tribal chant. HAHAHHA

I guess that means I have 10 versions of TEOTH, 11 including the MIDI.

Hey, thanks. It's good to know I'm not instantly an outcast just because I've left grad school :o. There are people 'like me' on MR too :D .

LimeiBook, an eye diagram is read in the following way: the bottom line is 0, the top line 1 (for digital data transmission). As you turn the laser on/off faster and faster, the time the light takes to turn on and off becomes significant. By powering the laser at 10 GHz or so, you can see the rise and fall of light. It's important to keep the 1's and 0's distinct to avoid errors. Typically a mask is applied to the middle of the diagram to evaluate the quality of a transmitter. That looks like this:

http://img250.imageshack.us/img250/9525/eyediagramwithmask5ua.png

A "bad" eye diagram is much less "open", and looks like this at high frequency:

http://img274.imageshack.us/img274/2279/picture13ya.png

I'll leave it Amnon Yariv to explain it, since he knows what he's talking about:
paper (http://jlt.osa.org/ViewMedia.cfm?id=66495&seq=0).

Chirp is a change in frequency modulation caused by intensity modulation. Basically when you directly modulate (inject carriers into the active region at a high frequency), it causes funky stuff to happen. OK, enough. :)

I'm not sure what is going on but I've had a bit of a forum day today, so I thought I'd be in this one too. I only got to the magic number last week.

My first av was phil spector and his 'whitefro' it was only meant to be temporary. Then I noticed a big picture of arnie on the gf's rotating picture folder desktop so I nicked it and spontaneously cut it out. Then, wanting something quick I just made a very quick background.

It also was meant to be temporary but I like the feel of it and it is distinctive so I'll probably keep it until I die, or until next week, whichever comes later. It started out as static but since I hate just about everyone and I identify with Steven, I added my favourite cartoon character as a quick animation.

In the future I might add slightly different bit's for the animation. Maybe Brock or Woodrow, or Mr Owl PhD. or Bikini Bear, or Fifi Doodle or Beauchamp de Rochembeau, Bunny, Cactus, or Lavender Sachet

Sorry I don't have time for faffing about so I'll just open it in ImageReady :D

I'd hazard a guess that Mad Jew isn't, though... ;)

Looking back over the thread, I've realised that I've not actually recorded my new 'tar here for posterity. Previously, I used a pic of a Subbuteo player that I quickly grabbed off a website and cropped to fit when I reached 500 posts, but I'd always wanted something a little more personal and unique to me. So, a while back I finally got around to knocking up a version of my own in Illustrator.

He's gone through a few kit changes, too – as well as his normal strip there's an away version (for when I was away on holiday), an England 1966 version for Saint George's Day, plus my Crabatar™ from the recent game.

So, I can change the colours easily for special occasions but hopefully people should still be able to recognise it's me! :)

Now *that's* what I call branding.
