iPod Help for a friend - iPod no worky after Windows Reinstall

I'll just copy and paste what he told me over IM:

i was reformating for windows
and when I went to do the ipod updater I choose update instead of restore
now when I plug it into USB windows says the usb device malfunctions and the ipod dosn;t turn on
well it shows the apple symbol and then a dock connector symbol and then shuts off
I can;t do anything with it now
I try the restting the system and restarting the system but nothing is working

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I don't have an iPod myself (yet), so I am not familiar with them - especially on Windows.
