Taxation on gifts sent to France..

Ok, I am considering buying an Intel iBook for a friend should they come out during MWSF, but she is currently studying in France.

Does anyone know how taxes would work on such packages?
 
you'll have to fill out a form declaring the value of the item when you ship it and then when it gets to France custom duties will have to be paid......many people believe that they can avoid paying import taxes on something expensive if its a gift but the fact is that most countries have a limit to the value of a gift that can be sent without having to pay import taxes......I dont know off hand what the value limit is for France currently but you're going to find it's in the range of like $30 to $50
 
Strange.. I was told that for stuff sent through the post it is $1000, but for couriers it is $200

A friend of mine sent me an iPod as a gift (4G, 20 gegs) from US to Germany
and I didn't have to pay any kind of taxes. He sent it using normal US Postal
service.

lots of people send lots of stuff thru the post office without actually declaring it properly
 
Make sure you send it through registered mail so the item is insured if it is lost, STOLEN or broken especially if your sending it to france......(have you seen National Lampoon's European Vacation)

I'm no french hater, but I agree. When I was in Chamonix I found these really cool wooden postcards. The store owner gave me some envelopes with them because she said the postmen think they're cool and will steal them if you don't put them in an envelope!!


Also, not to thread hijack, but does anybody know what the gift limit is for the UK?
