I'm waiting for my 800mhz iBook G3 to get here (expected Monday) and I was wondering how many MR'rs still have an iBook G3 in their setup, if you do could you post a pic of it and your machine's specs.

I think the iBook G3 is a great little machine, and very well designed. I'll be sure to post mine once it arrives :D.

Haha, I just went through my FTP looking for pictures and I found a ton from when I sold my iBook G3 500Mhz on here.

Specs:

12" iBook G3 500Mhz
384MB RAM
10GB HD
CD-ROM
Airport
And I was running 10.3.9 on it at the time.

Pics: http://itasor.com/ibook

Darn, now that I look at it (I have a 1.33Ghz 12" iB now) the thing looks so "silver" instead of white. I personally thing it looks like crap. :)

Ahh, I love iBooks.

Here's my 500mhz that died (was a 500mhz, 128mb, 10gb, DVD).

My dad uses this iBook setup everyday for email, web browsing, banking, and other similar things:

Blue Clamshell Rev A
300 MHz G3
160MB RAM
3GB Hard Disk
OS X 10.3.9

For such simple tasks, the machine actually runs OS X acceptably with a paltry 160MB RAM. The small hard drive is a bottleneck though.

I wish they'd go back to the metallic interior. I'd rather have shiny palm rests than yellow ones.

And damn that transparent case looked awesome compared to the opaque ones of today. I wonder with the new iMac and iPod sporting the transparent cases again that the iBook will be using cooler materials with the Intel switch. I hope so, when I replace this one in three or so years time I want an iBook that isn't going to yellow in the Aussie sun as this one has.

I'm posting from one right now.

600Mhz
512MB
15GB HD

Perfect for IM, email, and word processing...everything I need in college.

I'll get some pics when I get home.

G3 800 still going strong with Tiger

*snip*

How much RAM do you have, because I was wondering is 384mb (later to be upgraded to 640, which I know will) enough to handle Tiger smoothly?

Dec 18, 2005, 01:37 AM
I use a 700mhz iBook as my main (and only) machine. It has 640mb Ram and a DVD drive which I put in myself. It originally had a Radeon 7500 w/ 16mb vram, but it was upgraded to 32mb when my logic board was replaced. It runs nicely, but it can be a little slow now and then.

This pic is from over a year ago, the day I got my new G5. I use my iBook G3 900/640MB just about everyday. It gets me through the day at work and school. One day I will get a powerbook, but i have had zero problems with my iBook since I bought it new, umm, several years ago.

Maybe I will take some updated photos once I get everything organized again.

I bought a G3/900 MHz iBook from CompUSA auctions for $505 about 2 years ago. Didn't need it but couldn't pass up that deal. I use it instead of the 76 lb. Toshiba laptop my job gave me. Now that I'm opening an office on Denver, I expect to use it much more since I will now travel at least once a month. While not the fastest, it gets the job done (running Tiger with 640 MB).

Here's my G3 next to her big sister...

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/3390/ibooksetup9hl.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

All in all, the iBook's a pretty good machine perfect for browsing the web and a bit of light work if I fancy sitting on the settee rather than at my desk. It's a 500MHz G3 with 384MB of RAM and a 15GB hard drive and it runs Panther fine.

Specs are:

Panther 10.3.9

I like the clamshell because it comes apart easy and I can work on it myself and such.

Man, that iBook has had a trip, and all because skoker broke the trackpad when opening it up :p.

Yeah, he lost a few screws as well. ;)

Anyway, it's all fixed now. Red-tint screen fixed with replacement screen (nice and bright now too!), new trackpad/speaker part of the case, and I replaced the CD drive so it stays closed. I'm working on the HD now.

I seriously don't understand how you can break that little trackpad cable when you open it up, lol. You would have to practically rip the whole thing apart like an ape or something. :p :p :p

Do you regret selling it?

I am just overly sentimental about Apple hardware (I know I am a sappy bastard). This was honestly the first apple computer I have ever sold. I also did lots of work on that ibook in regards to a logic board swap, then a later CD drive swap.

I used the money from that sale to buy my beloved G4, and I do love that laptop now too. In fact, I can't remember a time when I didn't take it with me someplace since I bought the G4  !

... is my sole and only workhose right now. It´s getting slowler, but still I can get so much productivity out of it. Basically it smokes most of the computers of my friends, not speedwise, of course.

I pimped it myself to a 80GB harddrive and a Toshiba 8x double layer superdrive. It´s a G3 500 Mhz CPU with now 640MB RAM, a Lucent Wavelan hacked Airport Card and bluetoothed via D-Link USB Adapter. It runs very well together with OSX 10.4.3.

Because of all the mods I am basically now fluent in opening iBooks. My personal record is a mere 4 min, stripping of all the casings and shieldings.

It is recording DVB-C MPEG streams from a Sagem DBox 2 with Neutrino Linux via Ethernet, handles all my photoshopping, my mpeg editing, my dvd processing and music recording via a Soundblaster mp3+ usb box and Logic Express, which does work quite handy somehow. And internet browsing, word processing in small and huge quantities, scanning, my photo collection, data mining etc. pp.

Without it I truly feel naked. It never gave me any failure (only third party stuff like harddrive and dvd drive passed away).

It´s 4.5 years old. It earned a name. I´ll never ever leave it behind, but will repair it by any means and you´ll only be able to pry it from my dead cold hands, anyone?

you'll never see a "pc" owner so passionate about his machine. i can totally relate, me and my g4 ibook (specs in sig) are closer than two peas in a pod. i've spent endless all-nighters playing WoW and halo. despite the obvious graphic handicap it still performs much better than any pc i've owned. I love my ibook and it loves me.:D :D :D

I love my iBook. It's been everywhere. road trips, plane trips, scooter trips...I even took it to the top of Whistler when I was shooting pics (I used it to preview)

I can't count how many times I have dropped it, but it seems bullet-proof. I just throw it in my back pack and go.

It was my first mac and will never be forgotten if it ever dies. Knock on wood.

Haha, I should race you some time ;)

The one in my picture was taken apart 5 times by myself. 2 because I accidently forgot to connect cables, and the others for 2 Logic board replacements, and 1 HDD swap.

They are not too hard to work with, once you did it a few times. I wish I never sold mine, but since the money went into buying a G4 iBook (i NEED the Velocity engine), I don't feel too bad.

What are the chances! My only Mac, still working after 3 years! Here we go then...

600 MHz iBook G3
640Mb RAM
20 Gig hard disk (730Mb free!)
Mac OS 10.3.9
Self-installed Airport card

Apart from a dodgy "W" and Command key, a battery/power cable replacement absolutely nothing wrong with, except inablility to do high power stuff (eg play 2 yo games!). Everything fine, would be nice to get new computer (MWSF shopping time maybe) but finances tight, so probably not. :( ah well...I like this thread!:p

Well I don't really want this thread to die, because I still loves me some G3, and my 900MHz iBook g3 (hosed video, but I only paid $50 for it) got here today, and it's going to the Apple Store tomorrow, so I figured I'd revive this thread with a pic:

The setups of the iBook clamshells are making me want one. I need a second computer as it is hell when i have got my sisters young kids round all trying to use one computer so i am looking for a second computer that will be cheap. What i am considering now is a second hand Mac mini or a green ibook clamshell.

Here a few pictures of my iBook chamshell. I haven't really got a setup for this yet. I do intend to buy myself a small desk for this though at some point though.
This forum makes me spend my money. No just kidding I was planning to get a second laptop anyway and it was going to be a Mac Mini but i just got it sooner than I thought that i would do and I had a change of mind about getting the Mini when i saw the chamshell pictures in this thread.

I am using Mac 9.2 right now but i will change that when i get some more memory.

I am not to great at taking pictures either. I use a cheap budget camera to take pictures or my camera phone so that may not help matters either.

mark!

Hi markkk the Airport card that i am using is a slimline Buffalo Airstation WLI-PCM-L11GP-3 card. These cards are pretty hard to find these days but they can be a cheaper alternative to the Apple Airport card. It only allows for WEP security up to 128 bit though. I do prefer to use WPA but using WEP is not so bad. I also bought an Apple Airport card after i bought this on Ebay for 31/$60 because i saw that it was going for a decent price but i don't think that the seller may want to sell it to me because it may have fallen beneath their asking price. The auction ended at 8am UK time which is a bad time for US auctions to run really.

There are other alternatives also that will allow for WPA encryption that are slimline also that in my opinion will most probably work also. You could also look at some of the cards by Proxim by Orinoco because some Orinoco cards use the same chip as the Apple Aiport card.

There are some other alternatives to that may not call for modification either. There is a FairPort (http://cgi.ebay.com/FairPort-Card-Original-Airport-Card-Replacement_W0QQitemZ130012227403QQihZ003QQcategoryZ80060QQcmdZViewItem) card that i have seen retailing for $79 but at that price that can be more expensive that some Apple Airport cards that i have seen so that is hardly a good deal in my opinion. That seller has one negative feedback but quite a few people do seem to be happy with their product. Somebody also stated that their card also works in a Chamshell model which is good.

Here is one as well which looks promising

I'm working off of my refurb iBook G3 right now, it's my first Mac and so far I can't complain at all. A lot of people on these forums are going to tell you that the G3 is too old and slow. I didn't have the money to buy a Macbook or even a G4 iBook, so I spoke to some people who had G3 iBooks and I went for it. I just got the iBook last Friday and it's great. I upgraded the RAM to 640mb though. The full specs are in my sig. I use iTunes, Safari, iChat, and it runs awesome. Some little editing in iMovie too. It's running Panther. I would say that it actually is faster than my old 2.3ghz Pentium 4 Toshiba laptop. I say go for it if you don't need a real workhorse of a laptop. :)

Nice...I think you'll like it. Same specs as mine except for the RAM. To be honest though, I think you are going to want that RAM upgrade sooner than you would expect. My 512 stick showed up the same day as my iBook so I threw it in right away. I never ran it with the 256 it originally had, but I don't think it would have been too pretty. Great with 640 though. Anyway, enjoy the iBook. :)

Wouldn't really be worth it.

G3 iBooks are pretty much limited these days to email, chatting, browsing, iTunes, and Word.

Which, given how cheap they are, is pretty darn good to have such a productive machine for so cheap. And with less horsepower under the hood, you won't be tempted to waste time playing games. ;)

Does your keyboard fit on right with that card in there? Or does it bulge in the middle?

Roba
Mar 2, 2007, 03:27 AM
It fitted fine the keyboard went back as it should do.
I later sold that wireless card though as it did not allow for WPA encryption only WEP and also i thought that the original card would help it to sell better if i was going to sell it later on.
It was a good card though and it gave a strong signal.

I don't own the Clamshell anymore i sold it for £415/$800 it was maxed out though at 576ram, 60GB 5,400RPM with airport card KL 466.
I didn't really need it but at least i had a go at trying one out.
The Clamshell's are getting a little bit old though and i was a bit concerned that they may start to devalue soon so i struck while the iron was hot.

Whilst the Clamshell's are fine for basic tasks I would like a bit more modern second laptop now if i needed one.

Whats the specs on your iBook Cassie?

Mines a 700 MHz with a 30GB HD, Combo Drive, and 640MB of RAM running Tiger 10.4.9.

And I havent used it much in the past year.

My mom comadeered it for the living room. Shes not very good with computers, but enjoys the lil guy for browsing her emails, doing her NFO surveys, and playing those simple puzzle games on the internet. Which I suppose is good, as its battery is shot, and the reed switch is breaking, so if you wiggle it slightly, it goes to sleep, which makes it near useless for me as a laptop.

Congrats on earning your laptop.

Mine was free. Met a fella that said he dropped it, and it wouldnt turn on anymore. Turns out he broke the screen hinge and AC adapter. He gave it to me as a token for salvaging his data, then I bought a used LCD on here, a used AC adapter, and it still wouldnt power on. Took it to the Genius Bar, and the guy there said it was probably the logic board and video chip failed, so they took it, sent it out, fixed him up, and sent him back with a 30GB HDD instead of the 20GB. I originally had a 256 chip from California, but my friend recently gave me 2 512MB SO-DIMMs for these things, so out came the 256 and in went the 512. Now I just gotta find a use for that other 512, or someone to buy it.

I'm hoping to get my old Pentium III HP laptop back up and running, so she can use that, I can get my iBook back, and fix the damn thing.

I'll have to get pictures of the poor ol' guy one of these days. Hes taken such a beating, and hes still chugging along happily, and much faster now that I wiped the drive clean and cleeared out the original OSX 10.2 to 10.4 upgrade and all the junk that was uneeded. My mom was going "Wow, this thing is much faster now!"
