Anyone using the newest iMacs for gaming?

I have the 2011 top of the line model, and i usually just play SC2, but sometimes civ, and some other games. The graphics are terrible in starcraft.

I can probably still get 1500-2000 for this unit on ebay and transform that into an i5 27inch with the best graphics card on the new iMac?

worth it? Will i see considerably better graphics than my 6970m with 2gb?

Thanks for any input

I have the late 2012 27" iMac, with the 3.4 GHz i7, 675MX, Fusion Drive, and 8GB RAM.

I can play most games that came out in the 2012 or earlier years at max graphics settings. Portal 2, Civ V, HL2 episodes, L4D2, Borderlands 2, the new XCOM, all look great and run well. (I'd hope so for as much as I paid for this thing. I acknowledge I am a little crazy.) I'm not a Starcraft player so can't comment on that.

With the new CPU architecture and new GPU, your experience should be great with a Late 2013 model.

You've marked the topic as OS X, but have you considered running W7 or W8 via Boot Camp?

I've found for the same game I typically get better performance under Windows (I'm using a MBP w/ 6750m).

A site called Game Debate offers a way to compare two GPU's against each other. When comparing the AMD 6970m to Nvidia's 780m, they had this to say:

"In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 780M are massively better than the AMD Radeon HD 6970M."

Ref:

While that may not exactly answer your question ... I placed an order for a 27-inch, late 2013 iMac (3.5GHz i7, 780M 4GB). So, it was time for me to upgrade. Nevertheless, check out the site as it and others like it claim that the "GeForce GTX 780M is the fastest single mobile graphics card, as of June 2013."

The GTX680MX is also a great leap forward from the 6970m, even with 2GB.
Overclocking it yields basically a desktop 680, the 680mx is not based on a mobile GPU.
