Was the ZX Spectrum really that popular in the UK?

In the US, the Spectrum was never sold. It's predecessor, the ZX-81 wasn't well known here until Timex started selling it (as the TS-1000) and by that time, the rest of the industry was a generation more advanced. (The Atari-400 and VIC-20 were similarly priced systems. The TRS-80 CoCo, Atari-800 and Commodore-64 were more expensive, but not by a lot.)

It was massive!

Personally a C64 boy myself... could never get over the atrocious sprite detection over on the Speccy!

And the 3 or 4 max colours on most games...

Wasn't it called famously "the spectrum colour clash"?
