Hello,

I'm creating a presentation box from scratch and I would like to achieve a similar quality and finish to that of the iPhone 5s box. (or almost all Apple white cardboard boxes)

Does anybody know the type of card they use, presumably it's not actually called cardboard. It appears the iPhone box has two layers where the outer layer encloses the joints made by the inner box to hide glue?

The outer layer is just a printed sheet that is die-cut and then glued to the actual box. The box it is mounted to is made out of "chipboard or padding board" and it is usually die-cut as well. They are usually glued together while they are still flat and then formed into the box. Making boxes is a special process in the printing industry and is usually a division upon itself.

I assumed the interior box was padded in some way, these seem like somewhat specialist materials.

There are a few pre-made boxes similar to those mentioned for around £30. I though that making it myself will save money and will be custom. (however I can order a custom box)

Here's the exact type of thing I"m going for. The outside or white shell keeps everything together, then when removed, the interior box folds out to reveal the contents. I think custom made/bought will in the end be the better option as I also want embossing.

Yeah, the Apple iPhone boxes are a special type of box.

The one you are showing in your attachment is actually a simple box to make. The hardest part to it, would be figuring out the die to cut it properly. It would have to be embossed and printed first though before being die-cut. It would be printed on a cover weight stock approximately 10 - 24 points thick and coated 2 sides.

It would be cheaper for you to try to find one already made, as to produce just 1 would be ridiculously expensive. I have been a printing pressman for 39 years so know first hand how much this would cost.

As I'm looking for just one, when you say die-cut, could I not just use a sharp stanley (x acto) knife to cut it myself? (As an ex-Architect student I'm use to model making etc. but I appreciate how much cleaner a die cut or similar machine would be)

I've found a useful supplier in the UK who show in a video how they make boxes. I've also found another supplier but their minimum order count is 200!

I will be 3D printing an object and the box will need to be of an exact size so it's highly unlikely that there is one already pre-made.

I'll try and create a CAD mockup of what I want the final piece to look like - just to give you a better idea of goal.

We do mock-ups all the time for customers. Mind you they are not perfect, but are not intended to be either. But I am sure if you put the proper effort into it, I am sure it can be done. Ours are done quickly and I am sure you will be taking your time.

Just make sure you get the proper paper or card stock and glue or 2 sided tape for the project.

Forgot to update this post!

I received several quotes for a one off box, white with black debossing. It would cost around £600.

In the end I 3D printed a box with a 3D printed model I was sending. I then purchased a standard white magnetic closing box and wrapped dense styrofoam to create the exact dimensions I needed.
