If you're buying new from a store, and it's not listed as a closeout or clearance model, then it's a 2013 model.

If it's used, then you should boot up the Mac (obviously, to make sure it's working), and click on the Apple menu in the upper left corner, and select "About this Mac..." In the window that pops up, click "more info..." and you should get details as to which model year the mac in question is.

Under "MacBook Air" will be an identifier - mine says "13-inch Mid 2013".

For the model click on System Report and look under Hardware Overview then Model Identifier in the right hand pane . Mine says MacBookAir6,2.
