Does your sleep light come on when you choose sleep from the Apple menu?
Or, is that only when you close the lid?
Be really careful about closing the lid if your MBPro is not really going to sleep, as it can get really hot with a closed lid.

Here's a thread with several different fixes:

The sleep indicator doesn't light up whether I sleep it by closing the lid or from the apple menu. I know for sure it does sleep because it becomes silent and is not hot. I come back to use it after 5 hours and the battery is still the same so I know for sure it sleeps. The only problem is that the sleep indicator just doesn't turn on and start pulsing. It is just always off.
