I want to teach myself to play "proper" jazz guitar but I'm pretty much ignorant about this particular genre. What good jazz artists/albums (that feature a great guitarist of course) do you guys know? I don't wan't easy stuff, I want to learn from the best  :) thanks

Joe Pass is a well-respected virtuoso from the 60's and 70's, also Herb Ellis. These are less 'contemporary' than Methany, and (to me) more interesting to listen to. And if you really want to flip out, listen to Django Reinhart, the man was supersonic with only two functional digits!

Use the iTMS to get an idea of these guys.

It seems like I'm going to be spending a lot of $$ on cds  . It's too bad there's no iTMS where I live. Oh well, at least I get the 30 second samples... Is there anything preventing me (legal, moral or otherwise) from buying songs at the US iTMS?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Earl Klugh. Shocked actually. Earl Klugh is THE best Jazz guitarist ever. Kinda ironic really, because he doesn't consider himself a Jazz player, rather, he prefers to be called an "acoustic guitarist".

Pick up both volumes of his 'Best of' collection on iTMS and take a chill pill, you shan't be dissappointed.

Oh. Well, on the bright side, cd's are a higher quality than the m4p on iTMS. I get most of my music in cd format and have only ever bought 99 songs on iTMS (in a library of over 8,000).

I can't advise you about buying songs from iTMS U.S. though, is it even possible? Anyone? (From another country)

From the modern era, I recommend

Al Di Meola
John McLaughlin
Allan Holdsworth
Larry Carlton

For jazz guitar, I'd also recommend getting a good teacher.

There's another thread active right now addressing that very issue... The short answer seems to be gift cards + a dummy US address.

Volker Kriegel... sadly, he passed away in 2003

he used to play with Dave Pike and recorded his best work for the legendary German jazz label MPS.

Umm, not sure if anyone mentioned Charlie Byrd. Loved Jim Hall and Sonny Rollins together.

Try Jon Rauhouse for steel guitar.
