window server becoming unresponsive

Twice now in a week I've had a problem where my late 2009 iMac seems to have frozen. The mouse cursor moves but it seems that the window server has hung because the GUI doesn't respond when I click on a window. I can still ssh into the machine when this happens. No process seems like it is pegging the cpu according to top. Nothing appears out of the ordinary in the system.log.

Any suggestions on how I can diagnose this further when it happens again?
