I think that the stock ones look really cool. Does anyone know if they really put a drain on the battery or is that just a rumor? Does anyone have any real proof?

I don't think anyone can provide real proof. Anecdotally you could restore as new, not set up iCloud, put in Airplane Mode, set a dynamic wallpaper, and rock it from side to side and compare how long it takes the battery to run down as compared with the same configuration with a non-dynamic screen. Or measure the difference of the load on the battery in those two configurations.
