I'm trying to install something into the /usr/lib directory, but I get a "permission denied" error. I tried changing the permissions to 755 via the chmod command. chmod did not complain.

This is very annoying.

The ./configure and make steps are done as normal user then your make install step is usually done as sudo make install. You have to enter your password to allow the install as root or super user as they call it sometimes.
