I cannot wait for this game to be released. I kick on my old iMac to play Civ II from time to time since it's such a blast.

Along with Marathon. Marathon kicked some butt back in the day.

Brad Oliver, the lead developer for Civ III: Complete and Civ IV, is estimating this Spring. You can always check Aspyr's website for progress updates.

I just bought an iMac today in preparation for Civ IV ... no way would my old 12" PB be able to meet even the minimum requirements.

Do you guys think when civ 4 is released it will utilize 64-bit?

Why would it matter?

No chance ... they're just porting the Windows version, which wasn't 64 bit, nor dual processor enabled. It's the graphics card that matters for this game, 128 MB of VRAM at least.

Thats a bit crap, seeing as how there are no consumer Macs that have any more than 128 VRAM.

So most people playing this game are going to be on the minimum requirements - and thats never a good place to be.

I'm sure that they'll declare the minimum requirements as 64 mb VRAM, but it won't function properly below 128 mb. The PC requirements for the game are 64 mb minimum, 128 recommended.

I don't get this obsession with 64-bit...all it does is let you use more than 4GB of RAM. That's it. If Civ4 needs more than 4GB of RAM, we're in big trouble....

Ignore that. I put up the Civ III specs. I meant to do that. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Or you guys could quit bickering and take the initiative to look at Aspyr's website. :

Wow, they don't even mention VRAM. Could they be downgrading it back to 2D?

Edit: hmm... aren't those for Civ III? I don't think Civ 4 will even work with those specs.

Those look like the specs for Civ3: COmplete.

There's no released min-reqs for Civ4 yet.

Oops. You guys tricked me. That is that specs for Civ III.:o That said, Brad Oliver did say that it would run on a Mini, I suppose whatever the card is on that is the minimum.

Who is this 'Brad Oliver', is he in the know? I'm guessing Civ4 won't be able to run on the Mini (Radeon 9200 w/piddly 32MB VRAM), but I'd love to be wrong...

Doesn't it also allow the processor to process larger chunks of data?

Gosh if this game is anything like Civ 2 I had better steer clear. That game would just draw you in as the hour whipped by.

As have all Civ games. It's 6pm when you start playing.......next thing you know the sun is coming back up and it's 6am.....and you haven't blinked in hours.......great game. Though I think Civ III is my least favorite. I'm really looking forward to getting Civ IV on the Mac.

As OnceUGoMac said, Brad Oliver is the lead developer for Civ III: Complete and Civ IV. He also did the original Civ 3 port and the OS X Alpha Centauri patch, so he's very much a Mac Civ God. :)

He's a programmer over at Aspyr (and before that Westlake Interactive) and he's been doing most of the "important" (read: cash making) ports for Aspyr. Very talented guy, and pretty funny to boot. He has a blog HERE (http://www.brad-oliver.com:8081/~boliver/blog/).

I see from his blog that he bought one of the 32MB Minis too... well that gives me some hope for Civ4!

I thought readers of this thread would like to know Civ is out on the Nokia N-Gage:

http://www.n-gage.com/en-US/games/gamedata/civilization.htm?EMC=NewsletterJanFeb&ATT=USA_Category3&UID=DBC2EGQBS6

Sort of cool, and maybe one of the two N-Gage owners on the planet will buy it....

Thought I'd wake this thread to ask if there was any more news on Civ 4.Well according to the link to the blog that was posted you're going to need T&L for the game. So the new Mini might be left out. The old one should run this game better with the 9200 on it. :p

I love God-games like red alert, star craft, etc, so I got Civ 3 a couple years ago, and while I found it entertaining (researching different techs etc) I thought it was clumbsy and I hated the turn based model.

Several enemies were much more evil than others, they would insist on starting towns RIGHT next to mine (drove me crazy) and it really is impossible for me (perfectionist who wants to build every wonder and building in every city) to actually build an army and kill everyone respectfully.

Am I just totally terrible at this game or what? What is a decent strategy? I generally start off, make 4 or 5 cities, and grow them like mad then later try and branch out but by then everyone has like 30 or 40 cities and I'm doomed.

I also can't play the game if it isn't on easiest or one step above it. I'm really not that pathetic in other games, play me in red alert 2 and you're dead, but Civ 3? forget it. Any chance civ 3 is just a strange version and civ 4 should be better?

VRAM doesn't have a significant impact on performance, its GPU and VRAM speed that matters

As well as the number of pixel pipelines, and features like having T&L in hardware. However, if the game has so much texture and vertex data that it has trouble keeping it in 128MB at once, you would see a little slow-down as it swaps stuff to and from main memory.

As far as Civ 4 vs. Civ 3, apparently in 4, you can prevent other civs from crossing your borders (unless you have a treaty, or are at war), so they won't be constantly starting cities right next to yours. And yeah, there are strategies to beat the game, so much so that Civ 3 Complete actually adds two more difficulty levels after Deity. :) Personally I normally play at Emperor, as the increased unrest in Deity just annoys me. The consensus seems to be that Civ 4 is better than Civ 3.

Aarggggh!

I need this game now! I've just finished my exams, and was looking forward to some 20" next gen civving on OS X.

It says in the status that it is a "Final Candidate". From there on in, to Gold Master and onwards, and then to get it delivered to the UK, could take well over a month. I don't think I can wait that long.

Civ 3 complete, here I come...
