What is the point of these Internet Accounts in System Preferences?

In System Preferences, there is an option to login to your Yahoo! and Aol email (I'm guessing these get downloaded into Mail) accounts, though there is also a Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Vimeo and Flickr account options. What are these for? There are no applications pre-installed on my Mac for these.
