Newbie Mac user desktop woes

hello everyone

I'm new to the mac (previous pc girl). When I downloaded abiword, it saved an icon to the desktop. I am wondering were I can store it (& how) so that it doesn't sit on the desktop ... I know this sounds really basic, but I can't figure it out.

any help will be greatly apprectiated.

Just drag the application's icon to your Applications folder (or to your Dock if you think you'll use it a lot). Is there a .dmg file there too - a kind of white boxy looking icon? If so, then you can unmount that once you've moved the application (use the eject icon next to it in the finder) and delete it.
